Best Campgrounds near Tipton, MI

Developed campgrounds near Tipton, Michigan span across several recreation areas in the Irish Hills region. Ja Do Park Campground, situated directly in Tipton, offers family-oriented camping with electric hookups and seasonal operation from May through mid-October. W.J. Hayes State Park Campground in nearby Onsted provides access to Wamplers Lake with options for tent camping, RV sites with electric hookups, and cabin accommodations. The area features a mix of state park facilities, private campgrounds, and conference centers with varied amenities and terrain throughout Lenawee County.

Access to camping areas varies seasonally, with most private campgrounds operating from April through October. The Michigan state park campgrounds like W.J. Hayes maintain year-round accessibility, though amenities may be limited during winter months. "There's a nice little mile nature trail through one of those loops. There's a nice dog run that we took advantage of. There's a couple of lakes where you can fish and kayak," noted one camper about Hayes State Park. Roads throughout the region are generally well-maintained and accessible for standard vehicles, including those pulling RVs and trailers. Most campgrounds in the area require reservations, particularly during summer weekends and NASCAR race weekends at the nearby Michigan International Speedway.

Campers consistently highlight the lakes and water access as primary draws to the region. Several campgrounds provide direct access to lakes for fishing, swimming, and boating activities. Ted Ranch Campground sits across from Michigan International Speedway and serves as a quieter alternative to the track's infield camping during race weekends. Lake Hudson Recreation Area offers more rustic options with electric sites but no shower facilities. Many campgrounds in the area maintain a family-friendly atmosphere with organized activities. As one visitor to Ja Do Park mentioned, "Lots of fun activities for the kids, hayrides, slip and slide, playground and a whole rustic area to explore while you search for leprechauns." Shade coverage varies significantly between campgrounds, with sites along the outer loops of established campgrounds typically offering more privacy and tree cover.

Mary Jane Thurston State Park Campground

$34 per night for tent (primitive) camping

It's expensive to stay here, but at least it's a place to park. And it gets us closer to our destination. There are electric hook-ups on some sites, but it costs more. And they do have water. I didn't see a gray dump, but they probably do have one.

Mary Jane Thurston State Park Campground

    Lots to do here

The camp sites on the river are excellent. Some sights are by the highway. They are still nice, but lots of road noise. There is no water at the camp sites, but water is available. There are no shower facilities. There are great hiking trails and a nice frisbee golf course.

    Proud Lake Recreation Area

    Amazing

You need to know that this place is so so clean! The grounds, the sites, the bathrooms and the showers are all impeccable. It is true we were there in the middle of the week, but I’ve stayed at plenty of places during the week where things have been less than desirable. Everyone was most pleasant and helpful and the view of the lake was beautiful. If the campground had been full we probably would not have been able to see the lake from our site.

Waterloo Portage Lake Modern — Waterloo Recreation Area

Had a good time, a little crowded

We stayed for the weekend tent camping, getting to the site was a little crowded (alot of kids on bikes) our site was pavement but had some space to set the tent on the grass. I seen alot of sites with trees for shade. The vista walkway was across from us, it led right to the beach concessions. The beach walkway is handicap accessible. The fishing pier is new, has two benches and tables for your stuff. It is a bit of a walk to get to but is handicap accessible.
There are two bathrooms throughout the loop and one at the beach. The park workers walk around and tell you about the activities they have that day. We enjoyed our stay there is alot to do
