Best Dog-Friendly Camping near Parsonsburg, MD

Trap Pond State Park Campground provides dedicated pet-friendly accommodations across five camping loops with varying site configurations. Pets are allowed at all camping areas including tent sites, RV spots with electric and water hookups, cabins, and even yurts. Assateague State Park Campground and Assateague Island National Seashore Oceanside Campground both welcome pets with accessible walk-in and drive-in options. Sun Outdoors Ocean City Gateway (formerly Fort Whaley RV Resort) features pet-friendly glamping accommodations alongside traditional RV and tent sites. Most campgrounds maintain standard leash requirements, with pets needing supervision at all times. Bathhouses and facilities at these locations are kept clean, with sites offering picnic tables and fire rings at every location. Sites at Trap Pond specifically are reasonably spaced with tree coverage providing privacy between neighbors.

The cypress tree-lined pond at Trap Pond offers dog-friendly kayaking opportunities through narrow water passages that showcase unique tree formations. Several hiking and biking trails surrounding the campground provide pet exercise options, with the Bob Trail receiving particular praise from dog owners for its shaded pathways. The pond area does not permit swimming, an important consideration for campers hoping to cool off with pets during summer months. Many campgrounds feature individual bathroom facilities rather than communal ones, a convenience when managing pets during nighttime bathroom breaks. Wheelchair-accessible paths connect most camping loops, making it easier to walk dogs throughout the campgrounds. For beach access with dogs, Assateague's oceanfront sites provide direct beach access where pets can enjoy the shoreline, though specific pet beach policies may vary seasonally. The region experiences moderate insect activity near water features, so appropriate pet protection is advisable during evening hours.

    Love this place

What a great visit are having. Beautiful location with lots of space for everyone. Great beach and tiki bar. Pools for the family and very pet friendly. We stayed in the ‘big rig’ site within Club Castaway right on the water as we have a 40ft rig. Amenities are clean, staff friendly and helpful. Our dog, Daisy, loved the beach and the dog park and socialization w her pooch friends. Will be back.

In 40 years of camping, this is the best campground!

Beautiful camping spot with all the amenities. Loops with electric or no electric, Pet-friendly loops and non-pet friendly loops. I have been camping there off and on for 40 years first as a kid and now with my family. I love to go there every year at all seasons of the year. The best campground I've ever found in Maryland. Close proximity to both Ocean City and Assateague Island.

    Bring bug spray!

Great park, awesome amenities. Would definitely go back. Price is not cheap but the amenities make it worth it. Can’t wait until the zip lining courses are back open. Stupid COVID!

Bugs were crazy bad in the dog park and the moisture rich tent areas. Bring bug spray or a flame thrower.

    Sun Outdoors Ocean City Gateway

Plenty of perks with little crowd!

This is our favorite campground! It is close enough to ocean city we can enjoy the beach daily but far enough to relax in the woods! This campground is the small sister campground to frontier town. They have a free shuttle bus to provide transportation to assateaque island, frontier town, and ocean city. Campers here are eligible for discounts at frontier town as well! We tent camp but there are RV sites and cabins as well. There is an arcade, camp store, heated pool, playground, dog park, and mini golfing! The main pavilion has rentals for recreational equipment at no extra cost (hula hoops, balls, etc.) There are also themed weekends and scheduled activities throughout the week! The bathhouses are cleaned many times a day and the showers are spacious enough. The staff here is friendly and welcoming. Each tent site is far enough away from the other that you feel spread out and private. This is definitely a place I recommend to friends and family.

Assateague Island National Seashore Oceanside Campground

    Best Beach Camping in Maryland

Wild horses, wide, clean stretches of beach, safe surroundings, close to town. This is the best beach camping in all of Maryland. Pros:

    • the beach is wide with plenty of room to stretch out and is much cleaner than that of OC and surrounding beach areas
    • the wild horses walk right up to your site!
    • almost glamping- water pumps, outhouses, showers on each loop- much appreciated after days of sand, sun, and sweat
    • pet friendly
    • fire rings at each site, bonfires on the beach

    Cons:

    • it's expensive! Sites average $30 per night AND each car is $20 to enter the park
    • reservations are practically mandatory- they book fast with little vacancy
    • this is a barrier island- mosquitos are legit. Bring bug spray with DEET. You should also expect little protection from the sun, so a canopy shelter may be helpful
    • lack of privacy- each site is only several feet from the next. Take a look at the map and book large group sites or several in a loop together for friends

Bayside Assateague Campground — Assateague Island National Seashore

    Windy!

I stayed here for two nights during the week in late April 2019.

The weather in late April was generally OK, other than the wind.  The wind was so strong that none of my tent stakes would stay in the sand, and when I was finally able to secure a stake by putting something heavy on it, the wind ripped my guy rope.  Brutal.  I couldn't even start a campfire because the firepit was downwind and very close to my car and tent, and I didn't want them to go up in flames.

I guess the wild horses are OK, but I didn't find them particularly interesting.  They are definitely not very shy--one of them stuck his nose right in my tent.

I had my dog with me at this campground--IIRC the campgrounds in this park in VA are non-pet friendly, but the campgrounds in MD are pet-friendly (but I might have that backwards, so check their websites to make sure!).

    Sun Outdoors Rehoboth Bay

    Finally found our favorite

Plenty of room for big rigs. Sites are spacious and roads are wide. Hookups work great and it has the best wifi I've ever seen. Hotspots throughout the park. It is on the Rehobeth Bay. They have sites on the bay or on the shores of the lagoons. Restaurants, bars, pool, beach, dog park and beach, game room, well stocked store, the list goes on and on. We had to cancel this years trip there but just took a day trip and stopped in. They are still adding amenities throughout the park. The staff is excellent. Golf cart, kayak, and bike rentals are available. This is an excellent park to bike ride and kayak in. Just outside the campground is a public boat launch into the bay. It's a neat place to sit on the docks and watch the boats or fish. Crabbing and clamming can be done right at the campground. The offer a shuttle to Rehobeth Beach which is a great idea because the parking at the beach is limited.

    Assateague State Park Campground

A fun vacation turned into a nightmare

If I could give them a negative star I would. My daughter(5) was attacked by a Pitt bull while riding her bike at our site( loop h). When trying to confront the owners in(loop g) to get their site to report to the police they refused to give any information and proceeded to speak vulgarity. Then stated their dog never bit her when I witnessed the incident as well as another family. The family lied to the ranger saying their dog never touched my daughter and the ranger made not only my family leave but my parents as well who had another week to stay. Im extremely disappointed that my daughter's well-being was never discussed it was if they didn't care. They never even came to our site I had to the ranger again to even have someone come to my site. The pet rules state that any pet that is dangerous loud or is a problem at the park would be ask to leave immediately however they were not told to leave. My family had to.

Guide to Parsonsburg

Camping opportunities around Parsonsburg are characterized by Maryland's coastal plain ecosystem, with elevations rarely exceeding 50 feet above sea level. The region experiences humid summers with temperatures often reaching the high 80s, while winters remain relatively mild compared to inland areas. Seasonal conditions create distinct camping experiences, with spring offering moderate temperatures but increased rainfall that can affect unpaved campsites.

What to Do

Kayaking through cypress waterways: At Pocomoke River State Park Campground, paddlers can explore multiple waterways. "We have kayaked north to Snow Hill, Md, south to Milburn Landing, west up Nassawango Creek, and Corkers Creek at the campsite. We have also kayaked out of Byrd Park, in Snow Hill. All these kayak trails are wonderful! Plenty to see, no bugs, no mosquitoes..some biting flies if you go into the lily pad areas."

Winter beach camping: The off-season offers a different experience at Delaware beaches with fewer crowds. "We grew up here and the beach camping is awesome if you have a self contained vehicle that is 4x4. A permit is required but it's for 12 months. Beware if the wind is out of the west the bugs are vicious."

Free recreational equipment: Some campgrounds provide complimentary gear. "Bike rentals are free (donations accepted), there are several hiking/biking/horse trails, disc golf, and canoe/kayak/peddle boat rentals (in season). 45-minute Pontoon boat tours are available on weekends Memorial Day–Labor Day."

Evening campfire programs: Ranger-led activities occur regularly at many parks. "When not blocked by pandemic proposals, the nature center is a hub of educational activity and some great ranger programs. The park can get crowded fast. The eastern shore gets busy quick, even on the weekdays."

What Campers Like

Proximity to multiple destinations: The central location allows visits to several attractions. "This park is within an hour's drive (or less) to Ocean City, Historic Berlin, Chincoteague, Assateague, Wallops Island, and many other popular destinations." Many dog friendly campgrounds near Parsonsburg serve as bases for regional exploration.

Waterfront camping views: Delaware Seashore State Park Campground offers unique coastal perspectives. "Our site was almost directly under the bridge (and also a power pole!) but this was cool, especially at night when the bridge was lit up."

Wildlife encounters: Animal sightings enhance the camping experience. "A deer hung out by the campfire at night, and in the morning there were horse tracks all over the sight. We chose to stay in October with less people and less bugs."

Western-themed activities: Sun Outdoors Frontier Town offers unique entertainment options. "Has waterpark, putt putt golf, pools, allows pets. Also has Wild West Show and Ice Cream Parlor. Very enjoyable campground for the whole family. Pavilion offers crafts and DJ nights."

What You Should Know

Off-season advantages: Visiting during non-peak times provides different benefits. "We have been going here for years. We always go during the winter or early spring months to avoid the bugs as they are awful during the spring and summer. Do not feed or pet the horses!"

Seasonal insect challenges: Bug populations vary significantly throughout the year. "The one big problem with both Shad and Milburn are the bugs. It gets insanely humid here, and the mosquitoes, flies, and ticks take full advantage- especially if you decide to hike through the nearby State Forest."

Food storage requirements: Wildlife management requires careful practices. "The horses are giant trash pandas. They're smart and can open latches so do bring bungee cords, kayak straps, or ratchet straps to lock all of your food in cases or coolers."

Water conditions: Shad Landing Campground has specific water characteristics. "The area is also a natural mosquito repellent because of the ph in the Cypress Tree waters."

Tips for Camping with Families

Weather preparation: Coastal areas experience unique conditions. "It can get pretty cold so be prepared for that. It can get insanely humid here, and the mosquitoes, flies, and ticks take full advantage."

Kid-friendly amenities: Look for sites with specific activities. "If you have kiddos, try and get a site in Loop A – there is a nice and educational play area (plus a game I'd never heard of– Gaga ball). There is an additional playground in the day-use area, plus a volleyball net."

Water safety considerations: Bayside Assateague Campground — Assateague Island National Seashore offers specific water access. "We were a short walk away from the beach. The kids and I at least enjoyed that part." Beach camping near Parsonsburg offers various dog-friendly options with different swimming conditions.

Educational opportunities: Many locations offer learning experiences. "The park has programs and we painted a picture of Chuck the Owl (he was our model) which was fun."

Tips from RVers

Site leveling challenges: Be prepared for uneven terrain. "They are not level and have a sandy base so it took a bit of work to finally get the rig level, even with auto-levelers."

Size restrictions: Some dog-friendly campgrounds near Parsonsburg have limitations. "RV sites are very tight. Anything over 35' in my opinion will be hard to get into sites."

Hookup variations: Assateague Island National Seashore Oceanside Campground has specific utility arrangements. "No electric and generators are only allowed until a certain time at night. We've been twice so I guess you could say we liked it."

Weather considerations: Be aware of potential wind impacts. "The winds were nuts and over 50mph. We switched sites to spare our slide side, so caution to look at windy before going."
