Best Dog-Friendly Camping near Delmar, DE

Trap Pond State Park Campground welcomes pets across all five camping loops with spacious sites and diverse accommodation options. Campers can bring their dogs to tent sites, RV spots with electric and water hookups, cabins, and even yurts located throughout the 129-site property. The park offers easy access to multiple hiking and biking trails where leashed dogs can explore alongside their owners. Each camping loop features clean bathhouses, picnic tables, and fire rings, with separate areas for tent camping, pull-through RV sites, and walk-in camping. Pet owners particularly appreciate the shaded sites with tree coverage that provides natural cooling during summer months. Loop D offers the quietest camping experience for those concerned about barking dogs or other noise disturbances.

The Bob Trail around the pond provides an excellent 4.5-mile path for dog walking, with most of the route shaded by trees that protect pets from summer heat. Dogs must remain leashed on all trails and throughout the campground. Several docks and water access points allow views of the pond's distinctive cypress trees, though swimming is not permitted for humans or pets due to shallow water and submerged trees. The campground provides wheelbarrows to transport gear to walk-in sites, helpful for campers with pets and equipment. Located near Laurel, Delaware, the park positions visitors within reasonable driving distance to the Delaware beaches for day trips. Wildlife viewing opportunities are abundant, but pet owners should conduct tick checks after trail walks as the tiny dangerous kind have been reported by campers.

    Sun Outdoors Ocean City

    Love this place

What a great visit are having. Beautiful location with lots of space for everyone. Great beach and tiki bar. Pools for the family and very pet friendly. We stayed in the ‘big rig’ site within Club Castaway right on the water as we have a 40ft rig. Amenities are clean, staff friendly and helpful. Our dog, Daisy, loved the beach and the dog park and socialization w her pooch friends. Will be back.

    Bring bug spray!

Great park, awesome amenities. Would definitely go back. Price is not cheap but the amenities make it worth it. Can’t wait until the zip lining courses are back open. Stupid COVID!

Bugs were crazy bad in the dog park and the moisture rich tent areas. Bring bug spray or a flame thrower.

Plenty of perks with little crowd!

This is our favorite campground! It is close enough to ocean city we can enjoy the beach daily but far enough to relax in the woods! This campground is the small sister campground to frontier town. They have a free shuttle bus to provide transportation to assateaque island, frontier town, and ocean city. Campers here are eligible for discounts at frontier town as well! We tent camp but there are RV sites and cabins as well. There is an arcade, camp store, heated pool, playground, dog park, and mini golfing! The main pavilion has rentals for recreational equipment at no extra cost (hula hoops, balls, etc.) There are also themed weekends and scheduled activities throughout the week! The bathhouses are cleaned many times a day and the showers are spacious enough. The staff here is friendly and welcoming. Each tent site is far enough away from the other that you feel spread out and private. This is definitely a place I recommend to friends and family.

    Shad Landing Campground

In 40 years of camping, this is the best campground!

Beautiful camping spot with all the amenities. Loops with electric or no electric, Pet-friendly loops and non-pet friendly loops. I have been camping there off and on for 40 years first as a kid and now with my family. I love to go there every year at all seasons of the year. The best campground I've ever found in Maryland. Close proximity to both Ocean City and Assateague Island.

Bayside Assateague Campground — Assateague Island National Seashore

    Windy!

I stayed here for two nights during the week in late April 2019.

The weather in late April was generally OK, other than the wind.  The wind was so strong that none of my tent stakes would stay in the sand, and when I was finally able to secure a stake by putting something heavy on it, the wind ripped my guy rope.  Brutal.  I couldn't even start a campfire because the firepit was downwind and very close to my car and tent, and I didn't want them to go up in flames.

I guess the wild horses are OK, but I didn't find them particularly interesting.  They are definitely not very shy--one of them stuck his nose right in my tent.

I had my dog with me at this campground--IIRC the campgrounds in this park in VA are non-pet friendly, but the campgrounds in MD are pet-friendly (but I might have that backwards, so check their websites to make sure!).

    Sun Outdoors Rehoboth Bay

    Finally found our favorite

Plenty of room for big rigs. Sites are spacious and roads are wide. Hookups work great and it has the best wifi I've ever seen. Hotspots throughout the park. It is on the Rehobeth Bay. They have sites on the bay or on the shores of the lagoons. Restaurants, bars, pool, beach, dog park and beach, game room, well stocked store, the list goes on and on. We had to cancel this years trip there but just took a day trip and stopped in. They are still adding amenities throughout the park. The staff is excellent. Golf cart, kayak, and bike rentals are available. This is an excellent park to bike ride and kayak in. Just outside the campground is a public boat launch into the bay. It's a neat place to sit on the docks and watch the boats or fish. Crabbing and clamming can be done right at the campground. The offer a shuttle to Rehobeth Beach which is a great idea because the parking at the beach is limited.

    Assateague State Park Campground

A fun vacation turned into a nightmare

If I could give them a negative star I would. My daughter(5) was attacked by a Pitt bull while riding her bike at our site( loop h). When trying to confront the owners in(loop g) to get their site to report to the police they refused to give any information and proceeded to speak vulgarity. Then stated their dog never bit her when I witnessed the incident as well as another family. The family lied to the ranger saying their dog never touched my daughter and the ranger made not only my family leave but my parents as well who had another week to stay. Im extremely disappointed that my daughter's well-being was never discussed it was if they didn't care. They never even came to our site I had to the ranger again to even have someone come to my site. The pet rules state that any pet that is dangerous loud or is a problem at the park would be ask to leave immediately however they were not told to leave. My family had to.

Guide to Delmar

Trap Pond State Park provides an appealing mix of water recreation and woodland camping for outdoor enthusiasts near Delmar, Delaware. The park sits at just 50 feet above sea level in the Chesapeake Bay watershed, creating a unique ecosystem where America's northernmost natural stand of bald cypress trees thrive. During spring and fall, temperatures range from 45°F to 75°F, making it an ideal season for extended outdoor activities without summer's humidity and insect pressure.

What to do

Kayaking through cypress trees: At Trap Pond State Park Campground, the distinctive cypress trees create a memorable paddling experience. "We loved riding the bus to the water park (which is free) but we chose to drive to Assateague because they only drop off and pick up at the visitors center and the distance from there to the beach was a little far," notes one visitor to nearby Sun Outdoors Frontier Town.

Mountain and gravel biking: The trails provide varying terrain for cyclists of all skill levels. "Great biking(mountain and gravel). All in..would stay again," reports Gary D. about Trap Pond. Some parks offer complimentary equipment: "There is a bike shed where you can sign out bikes for free for the day which was super neat."

Hiking with wildlife viewing: Multiple trails of varying lengths wind through forests and around waterways. "The Bob Trail around the pond provides an excellent 4.5-mile path for dog walking, with most of the route shaded by trees that protect pets from summer heat," explains a ranger. At Pocomoke River State Park, "We are kayakers in the warm weather and hikers when its cooler. We have kayaked north to Snow Hill, Md, south to Milburn Landing, west up Nassawango Creek, and Corkers Creek at the campsite."

What campers like

Pull-through site layouts: Many campers appreciate the thoughtful site design at area campgrounds. "Sites are fairly spacious and have an interesting semi-circle pull through layout so backing in not required," notes Jim G. about Trap Pond. However, they "are not level and have a sandy base so it took a bit of work to finally get the rig level, even with auto-levelers."

Free recreational equipment: Several dog friendly campgrounds near Delmar offer complimentary gear. "They have pedal boats and canoes that you can take out on the lake, which you can also fish in," shares a visitor to Fort Whaley RV Resort. Another adds, "There is a variety of sporting goods to borrow at the store, horseshoes, basketballs, and whiffle ball sets to name a few."

Clean facilities: Campground cleanliness ranks high on campers' appreciation list. At Assateague Island National Seashore, "the best thing about this place are the sparkling clean bathrooms with flush toilets and free hot water showers. They also offer sinks with running hot water for washing dishes which makes more ambitious campsite cooking a breeze."

What you should know

Weather challenges: Coastal campgrounds experience significant wind and rapid weather changes. "Check the weather a lot because the storms roll in quickly," advises a camper at Assateague. At Delaware Seashore State Park, "The winds were nuts and over 50mph. We switched sites to spare our slide side, so caution to look at windy before going."

Insect preparation: Depending on location and season, insects can impact your experience. "This was a very nice campground close to the beach. Full hook up sites and pull-through. The only negative was how bad it smelled from all the dead horseshoe crabs!" reports William H. about Delaware Seashore State Park.

Wildlife interactions: Wild animals frequent some campgrounds and require specific precautions. "The horses are giant trash pandas. They're smart and can open latches so do bring bungee cords, kayak straps, or ratchet straps to lock all of your food in cases or coolers," warns an Assateague visitor.

Tips for camping with families

Activity variety: Campgrounds with multiple recreation options keep children engaged. "This campground has a new golf course that is free to campers. They offer shuttles to the beach or their sister Campground Frontiertown. Your camping also includes FREE admission to Frontiertowns water park, which is pretty good on a hot day," notes a visitor to Fort Whaley.

Educational opportunities: Cape Henlopen State Park provides learning experiences woven into recreation. "There is a fantastic nature center (FREE) complete with touch tanks and knowledgeable park staff," explains a reviewer. "As a former military installation, there are lots of military historical items and sites. Underground bunkers and batteries and such."

Family-friendly layouts: Consider campgrounds with specific family amenities. "If you have kiddos, try and get a site in Loop A – there is a nice and educational play area (plus a game I'd never heard of– Gaga ball). There is an additional playground in the day-use area, plus a volleyball net," recommends Lee D. about Trap Pond.

Tips from RVers

Site selection strategy: Choose your site based on noise preferences and privacy needs. "The closer you are to the camp store, the louder and busier it is. Lots of kids. If you want quiet stay to the ends of the rows. E and F are quieter too," advises an RVer at Cape Henlopen State Park.

Leveling challenges: Many coastal sites require extra effort for leveling. "Sites are level and paved along with some sand and grass. Also a picnic table- no fire rings at the sites, but there were a couple campfire areas scattered around the park," notes a Delaware Seashore camper.

Seasonal timing: Visit during shoulder seasons for better camping conditions. "We went during the winter or early spring months to avoid the bugs as they are awful during the spring and summer," recommends a visitor to Oceanside Assateague, highlighting how pet-friendly campgrounds near Delmar can offer very different experiences depending on timing.
