Best Dog-Friendly Camping near Walsenburg, CO

Lathrop State Park's two campgrounds, Piñon and Yucca, permit pets on leash throughout their facilities, including tent sites, RV spots with full hookups, and cabin accommodations. Both campgrounds feature fire rings, picnic tables, and access to showers while maintaining pet-friendly policies year-round. Dakota Campground allows pets but prohibits alcohol and fires, offering electric hookups, sewer connections, and shower facilities for RV and tent campers. The Pueblo South-Colorado City KOA includes a dedicated dog park area for off-leash exercise, with pets welcome at their tent sites, RV spots, cabins, and glamping accommodations. Veterans with service dogs should note that some private campgrounds in the region may not properly distinguish between service animals and pets, as one reviewer experienced at a nearby lodge.

Zapata Falls Campground permits dogs on trails and throughout the campground, though the rocky terrain makes digging cat holes challenging for pet waste disposal. The campground provides bear boxes at each site, which can be useful for securing pet food. Hummingbird Ranch welcomes pets with picnic tables and toilet facilities across its eight tent sites. Blue Lake Campground, temporarily closed but typically open May through October, offers pet-friendly camping at 10,000 feet elevation with vault toilets and drinking water available. Campers report wildlife encounters including bears, so proper food storage for pets is essential. The road to Bear Lake Campground includes multiple switchbacks on dirt and gravel, but rewards pet owners with pristine lake access and mountain views at 11,000 feet elevation where dogs can enjoy cooler summer temperatures.

    Sacred White Shell Mountain

4 SEASON CAMPING - ALWAYS BUSY, ALWAYS HAS PLENTY OF SITES

FYI in the spring summer is way more fun to sleep inside the sand dunes with a parking permit you buy at that lot. The hike up into the dunes is epic but yes this is free and last minute high capacity. Sand dunes camping has a 10 or 15 person per day

The Dyrt has a weird seemingly inaccurate map however the road leading out to the dunes did in fact had a dirt road that branches right off towards the mountain.

The Dyrt map says Mt Blanco road but Apple Maps says lake Como road. They both branch off highway 150. There is obvious signs of dispersed camping used ie firepit and a randomly left behind camping item

The weather I was very skeptical about. thought i would have to book a hotel. Last time I went camping per review off of Idaho springs down Fall River road it was snowed in even tho the main road was fine. After I got through the very snowy and icy mountain pass from Walsenburg to for garland it became very dry and there was no more snow.

This region in Colorado is fair weather all year long. With the exceptions of severe winds sometimes rarely

    Pueblo South-Colorado City KOA

    Nice 1 night stay

There’s 2 KOA’s in Pueblo, so heads up. I drove past this one thinking I was staying at the one on the north end of town. We stayed one night and it has a cool little playground for the kids, a little dog park for your dogs and full hookups, which is nice. The people at check-in are great, and they have someone drive out to your site with you, which is very nice. The sites are right on top of each other, so if you have a neighbor you can’t open your awning, and you’re close to the highway.

    The Pine Lodge

Veterans with Service Dogs feel unwelcome

As I start this, the manager Crystal is a very polite and wanting to make your stay is comfortable. The high point of my stay.

If I was told sooner that my service dog was just considered a pet to the owners, I would have canceled my trip to here. It was three days when one of the owners made what I consider as a put down of me as well as my service dog. If I was told sooner than the three days, I would have canceled my trip all together and gladly lose only $20, instead if I canceled on that day I would have lost nearly $450.

Ask any veteran if their service dog is only a pet. For those who do not realize this, but a veteran and their service dog is just one entity. The service dog being considered a pet is like telling someone with an artificial limb if that part of the vet is a"pet". The service dog is a part of the veteran and has specific duties to that veteran and is trained to do those duties to assist the veteran.

My service dog has 8 specific jobs to help me live my life, he is never to be considered just a"pet" as I had been told. This is sent out to my brothers and sisters on just how unwanted we are going here, as well as The Lodge@ San Isabel Lake and Aspen Acres.

Realistically, all I wanted was some sort of acknowledgement that it was an honest mistake in saying that, but when there is silence that screams louder than what words could ever say.

    Lathrop State Park

    Clean quiet, well managed

Just outside Walsenburg, CO, 2 small lakes. We had electric but did not use, loop D spots had some nice views of Spanish Peaks in distance (youngest peaks in Rockies), several small playgrounds for kids, SMALL shower stalls (coin op with changers available), some flush, some pit, toilets (all clean), 1 bar Verizon but were able to watch Chiefs/Chargers game on phone. Gift shop, paved trail around lake, some other hiking paths, quiet hours were kept by campers. Noticed staff made regular trips through grounds. Hogback trail moderate (perhaps on side of harder moderate, tough for older large dog--wouldn't take him on it again). Electric sites available (chose one but did not use the hookup). Did not notice ANY hwy noise in loop D.  Water spigots available at SOME sites and/or spots in campground with one designated water fill-up spot near entrance. Most if not all sites appeared level. Beware of prickly pear cactus while walking dogs, particularly at night.

    Great Sand Dunes Oasis

Amazing stay with views of the Dunes!

We loved this camp site! It was our first time to tent camp in Colorado and it was great. Several sites to choose from. Some have views of the dunes, some are more secluded. Bathrooms were clean. Very spacious tent site with a fire pit. Our tent sleeps 6 and we had no trouble fitting in the spot.

Juniper Breaks Campground — Lake Pueblo State Park

    Great campsite

It was a great campsite, have to use fire pits provided. Alcohol is allowed pets are allowed on leash. And most camp sites are within walking distance to the water. Kids loved it! It was cheap to reserve a site ($20+) and entry fee is like $8.

    Blanca RV Park

    Cool little place

Would give five stars, but right on the main road through the San Luis Valley so it's a little loud, and bright at night. That said, it's still peaceful, and the people are nice. Has shower and laundry for guests, and full hookups for RVs. It's $30 per night or $199 a week, we stayed two days, and would stay again. They allow pets, but have a strict "no pit bulls" dog policy. So unless your "pit bull" is a service dog, they can't stay. Unfortunately dog breeds and temperaments are still misunderstood, but that aside, good people, and nice little place to stay.

    Aspen Acres Campground

    Well maintained & staffed

This was a delightful experience for us. There are sites for every type of camper: tent, trailer, RV, glamping and cabins. This is a somewhat small but well maintained private campground with lots of simple amenities. All is the wooded back-in sites have full hook-ups (30A) and there are pull-thru sites (Ithink they are still 30A). The center wooded area is perfect for tents. A small dog park gave our girls the chance to run free for a little. There is a shower house with bathrooms that are well maintained. Trash is kept tidy and didn’t smell even on the 97 degree day. Very easy to access but no road noise (at least not at our site).

We have a 26’ trailer and stayed in site 18. It was near the end of the row and relatively quiet. We only wish we had a longer power cable. (Our next purchase!) Our port is at the back and the outlet was way up front. To reach, we had to set up near the front of the site which limited our parking. Just pointing that out for others who might be ill prepared too.

We were too far away to take advantage of WiFi which is fine, we just wandered up near the office to check our texts once daily. It might be more accessible if you are located closer to the office. No cell service for Verizon. Personally, I was happy to be unplugged for a couple of days!

Although we had a fire ban in effect, we were able to rent a propane fire pit from the office. Be super cautious and check fire restrictions for Custer County. (http://oem.custercountygov.com/firecon.htm)

Aspen Acres has a lot more staff than I expected and they patrolled frequently. Very helpful and friendly.

5 minutes from Bishops Castle and 10 minutes from Lake Isabel ($7 day use fee). Easy drive up from I-25 but fairly steep in spots if that is problematic.

    We will stay again!

Guide to Walsenburg

Walsenburg sits at the base of the Spanish Peaks at approximately 6,200 feet elevation, with surrounding campgrounds ranging from 6,000 to over 11,000 feet. Summer temperatures typically reach 80-90°F during daytime with significant cooling at night, especially at higher elevations. Winter camping remains available at lower elevations, with some campgrounds maintaining year-round access despite occasional snow.

What to do

Hiking near Spanish Peaks: At Lathrop State Park's Piñon Campground, trails provide excellent views of the Spanish Peaks. "Fantastic park. One of our absolute favorites. Excellent trails and a ridge to climb, as well as stellar views of the Spanish peaks. Excellent scenic drives are not far away," notes Jeff N. from Piñon Campground.

Water recreation: Martin and Horseshoe Lakes at Lathrop State Park offer swimming, fishing and boating options. "Lathrop State Park is a gem - good hiking / views, a golf course, and swimming / water activities," reports erin D. The park maintains two lakes accessible to campers year-round.

Stargazing: The higher elevation campgrounds offer exceptional stargazing due to minimal light pollution. At Hummingbird Ranch, campers can experience unobstructed night skies. "We came here to watch the Perseid meteor shower and it did not disappoint. We had the place to ourselves and a great view of the stars," shares Tara M.

Wildlife viewing: Early mornings provide opportunities to spot local wildlife. "Woke up to an 8-point deer munching in the bushes," reports Kathrina M. from Greenhorn Meadows Park. Most campgrounds in the area sit in prime locations for viewing deer, birds, and occasionally larger mammals.

What campers like

Mountain views: Campers consistently praise the dramatic mountain panoramas. "Great spot for our first RV stay. Good views of Spanish peaks and site was very quiet," writes erin D. about their stay at Piñon Campground. The eastern slopes of the mountains create distinct lighting conditions that change throughout the day.

Quiet camping options: Many campsites offer relative seclusion despite proximity to highways. "We generally prefer more seclusion and privacy which we had for the most part with trees, etc. at this site. Some sites didn't have that," notes a Piñon Campground visitor. Most campgrounds maintain reasonable spacing between sites.

Clean facilities: Yucca Campground at Lathrop State Park receives praise for maintenance. "Clean campground and restrooms. Great views of Spanish peaks," writes karl. The campground features flush toilets and shower facilities maintained regularly.

Dog-friendly policies: Most campgrounds near Walsenburg welcome pets with minimal restrictions. At Pueblo South-Colorado City KOA, dogs receive special accommodations. "There's a nice little playground for the kids, a little dog park for your dogs and full hookups, which is nice," explains Chris H. The dog park allows off-leash exercise within a controlled area.

What you should know

Weather changes rapidly: Be prepared for sudden temperature shifts and wind. "Very windy at times and also a-little road noise from the near motorcade," reports Macel C. about Piñon Campground. At higher elevations, afternoon thunderstorms occur frequently in summer.

Reservation requirements: Most established campgrounds fill quickly during peak season. "We drove out there on a Monday afternoon to find there were only like 3 spots total and all of them were taken. Listen when the other reviews say they fill up fast!" warns maddie about Blue Lake Campground.

Road conditions: Access to some campgrounds requires navigating rough roads. At Zapata Falls Campground, visitors note: "The road to get to the site is very rough and rocky. It takes an easy 20-30 minutes of driving just to go 3ish miles." Most remote sites require higher clearance vehicles.

Additional fees: Watch for separate day-use fees beyond camping costs. "You need to pay for site, $9 entrance fee, and showers (50 cents for 4 minutes, etc.)," explains Bethany S. about Yucca Campground. Some campgrounds also charge separately for dump station use.

Tips for camping with families

Playground access: The Pueblo South-Colorado City KOA provides dedicated play areas for children. "A very welcoming place with warm camping cabins. I recommend it," says Ben F. The campground maintains family-friendly facilities year-round.

Lake activities for children: Lathrop State Park offers safe swimming areas during summer. "The park has some beautiful views, including a lake we could walk to from the campsite," shares Rachel from Yucca Campground. The swimming beach provides supervised access during peak season.

Wildlife education opportunities: Greenhorn Meadows Park offers nature observation close to camp. "Plenty of trees, a small creek, and trails," mentions Kathrina M. Rangers occasionally provide educational programs during summer months.

Temperature planning: Higher elevation campgrounds experience significant nighttime cooling even in summer. "It was definitely cold and windy at night," reports Macy N. about Blue Lake Campground. Families should pack appropriate layers for children.

Tips from RVers

Site selection considerations: At many campgrounds, RV sites vary significantly in privacy and layout. "The sites are basic with electrical and water. The restrooms are basic and no showers. The camp is in a good location to local towns and the highway," advises Steve & Ashley G. about Piñon Campground.

Long-term stays available: Some facilities accommodate extended stays. "There's a few RV spots for temps and overnighters and a sewer dump for fee. There's a kids park, laundry and bathrooms," explains Amanda T. about Dakota Campground.

Road access considerations: RVers should research routes carefully before arrival. "Convenient on/off highway," notes Ann F. about the Pueblo South-Colorado City KOA. Most campgrounds provide detailed directions to avoid GPS errors and difficult turns.

Hookup variations: Available connections differ between campgrounds. "Nice pull through spots," reports Katie B. about the Pueblo South-Colorado City KOA. Many facilities offer both partial and full hookup options at different price points.
