Best RV Parks & Resorts near Walsenburg, CO

Lathrop State Park provides paved RV sites with electric hookups, water spigots, and full-service amenities near Walsenburg. The park's Piñon Campground accommodates large motorhomes with pull-through spaces in loops A through D, while several private RV parks like Circle the Wagons offer full hookup sites. "The pinion campground was a great choice for our first rv stay. The park is accommodating with toilets and showers at the campgrounds and has hiking trails and plenty of lake to fish from," according to one visitor. Sites at Piñon Campground have 30-amp service and nearby spigots for filling fresh water tanks, though not all sites have sewer connections.

Advance reservations are recommended for summer stays, particularly at Lathrop State Park where weekend sites fill quickly. Most RV parks in the area remain open year-round, though winter visitors should prepare for freezing temperatures affecting water hookups. Gears RV Park near mile marker 30 provides full hookups with easy highway access, while Tower 64 Motel & RV Park offers basic overnight accommodations with some travelers noting uneven terrain. Free dump stations are available at certain parks including Lathrop, and most commercial campgrounds welcome pets with standard restrictions. Cell service varies throughout the region, with stronger signals near towns and spotty coverage in more remote camping areas along Highway 12 toward Stonewall.

Piñon Campground — Lathrop State Park

Lathrop State Park has a little of everything

We have visited this park several times, in the summer, spring and fall. The campground provides a nice visitors center, two small lakes (one non-wake), a sand beach, paved and unpaved bike trails, fishing, a kids fishing pond, trails, and electric or no-hook-up camping. The campground is divided into three loops with each loop containing flush toilets and shower facilities. A tent-only campground is situated closer to the highway, while the three loops are far from the road and provide ample star-gazing experiences. Favorite spots include 102 (has a great view of the Spanish Peaks), and site 84 (private pull-through with junipers and other short trees to block the road/other campers). I have attended several ranger programs here and hiked on all trails. Playing on the beach and picnicking is enhanced by the water stations to wash off the sand, benches, picnic tables, and shade trees. Kayaking on the no-wake lake is peaceful and fishing is abundant. Bike riding is simple and mostly flat. A fully paved trail circles the lake and is accessible by the campgrounds. A public, 9-hole golf course sits directly next to the park. The course is inexpensive and fun for an afternoon or morning. If you've exhausted all your options at the park itself, head one hour away to the Great Sand Dunes National Park to "surf" on the dunes and learn about this beautiful area. This park truly has a little of everything and while it is one of the oldest state parks in Colorado, it is well-maintained and enjoyable year-round.

    Aspen Acres Campground

    Well maintained & staffed

This was a delightful experience for us. There are sites for every type of camper: tent, trailer, RV, glamping and cabins. This is a somewhat small but well maintained private campground with lots of simple amenities. All is the wooded back-in sites have full hook-ups (30A) and there are pull-thru sites (Ithink they are still 30A). The center wooded area is perfect for tents. A small dog park gave our girls the chance to run free for a little. There is a shower house with bathrooms that are well maintained. Trash is kept tidy and didn’t smell even on the 97 degree day. Very easy to access but no road noise (at least not at our site).

We have a 26’ trailer and stayed in site 18. It was near the end of the row and relatively quiet. We only wish we had a longer power cable. (Our next purchase!) Our port is at the back and the outlet was way up front. To reach, we had to set up near the front of the site which limited our parking. Just pointing that out for others who might be ill prepared too.

We were too far away to take advantage of WiFi which is fine, we just wandered up near the office to check our texts once daily. It might be more accessible if you are located closer to the office. No cell service for Verizon. Personally, I was happy to be unplugged for a couple of days!

Although we had a fire ban in effect, we were able to rent a propane fire pit from the office. Be super cautious and check fire restrictions for Custer County. (http://oem.custercountygov.com/firecon.htm)

Aspen Acres has a lot more staff than I expected and they patrolled frequently. Very helpful and friendly.

5 minutes from Bishops Castle and 10 minutes from Lake Isabel ($7 day use fee). Easy drive up from I-25 but fairly steep in spots if that is problematic.

    We will stay again!

Carpios Ridge Campground — Trinidad Lake State Park

    Beautiful Park

Nice, level gravel sites. Only a handful of FHU’s. Most are water/electric in the section nearest the ranger station. Lots of electric only sites in a pretty area with Great Lake views. Many tent sites. This campground has a laundry facility with 3 washers and 3 dryers. Also has vending machines with snacks and cold drinks. Restrooms are super clean. You have to pay to take a shower, it takes quarters only and based on time. There are great hiking trails and you can hike to the lake. Sites are fairly close together, and many are not long enough for large RV’s. This is an expensive park that is well maintained. We paid $41 a night for a FHU, and on top of that there is a $9 per day park entrance fee.

Piñon Campground — Lathrop State Park

    Views for Miles

We stayed here the first week o f November 2020. Not all sites were open and the park was not crowded at all. The bathrooms were open and the weather was beautiful. The sites are all pull through and private. We had lots of space behind us to stretch out in. A picnic table was also placed in a space where shade would be provided on a concrete slab. Electric and water at the site and a dump station at the exit.

    Dakota Campground

    RV Tent no frills

Older privately owed and operated by good people. Most of the people here are long term. There's a few RV spots for temps and overnighters and a sewer dump for fee. There's a kids park, laundry and bathrooms and one tent spot.

Arkansas Point Campground — Lake Pueblo State Park

    Great Stop Over Spot

Arkansas Point Campground at Lake Pueblo State Park is the closet to the state park office and marina. It cost $10 for a park pass plus you make your site reservations online. It offers 30/50 amp electric sites, with water fill stations throughout the campground. There is a dump station just as you enter the campground as well. Each site has a covered picnic table and some sites have a shade tree.

Bathhouses are very clean and offer hot showers. It does show a playground at this campsite but it has since been removed.

If you are going to take your boat and fish you can stay on the water 24 hours/day; however, to ente/exit the water your boat must go through inspection, so you want to be out of the water while the inspection site is still open.

You can enjoy swimming off the beach area or choose to go hiking one of the many many trails they have.

We stayed in site #62 and it offered shade as well as a water station next to it. This is a pull thru site. We would definitely stay here again.

Guide to Walsenburg

Walsenburg sits at an elevation of 6,200 feet in the foothills of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, serving as a gateway to the Spanish Peaks region. Camping options range from state park facilities to commercial RV parks situated along Highway 12 and I-25. Winter temperatures frequently drop below freezing from November through March, requiring campers to prepare for seasonal conditions.

What to do

Explore Bishop Castle: Located near Aspen Acres Campground, this unique roadside attraction is accessible within a short drive. "We used this campground to explore the surrounding area and Bishop Castle. Staff was very friendly and they had a lot things to do for the kids in the camp store/facility," reports one camper.

Fishing opportunities: Multiple lakes provide fishing access for various skill levels. "The park is accommodating with toilets and showers at the campgrounds and has hiking trails and plenty of lake to fish from," notes a camper at Piñon Campground in Lathrop State Park.

Wildlife viewing: Early morning and evening hours offer prime wildlife sighting opportunities. "We spotted plenty of deer and horses nearby (though none entered the campground itself)," according to a visitor at Circle the Wagons RV Park. Some sites even organize guided viewings: "Even got a dusk field trip to see the wildlife," reports a camper at Stonewall Lodge.

What campers like

Quieter camping locations: Travelers appreciate sites away from highway noise. "Near highway but I didn't hear it," notes a camper at Gears RV Park and Cafe. Another visitor mentioned, "This area has gravel rods and less facilities than the Yucca campground. However, you have large pull in space and more rustic camping."

Clean facilities: Well-maintained bathhouses rate highly among campers. "The facilities were exceptionally clean — especially the bathrooms and showers, which were spotless," reports one visitor. Another notes, "They clean the bathrooms/shower-house twice a day and it shows."

Campground amenities: Features like game rooms and common areas enhance camping experiences. "There's also a game room and a fun book exchange for guests," mentions a camper at Circle the Wagons RV Park. Others appreciate community spaces: "Nice play area for children and a kitchen and a campfire area in the middle of campground."

What you should know

Varying site quality: Site conditions can differ significantly between campgrounds and specific sites. "The sites are basic with electrical and water. The restrooms are basic and no showers," notes a camper at Piñon Campground. Another visitor reports, "Some of the sites were close and a tight squeeze to back into."

GPS navigation challenges: Some rv parks near Walsenburg and surrounding areas have access issues. "GPS won't get you here because 2nd Street is bisected by a creek with no bridge. I had to back my trailer a couple of blocks," warns a camper at Circle the Wagons RV Park.

Seasonal considerations: Weather impacts camping conditions throughout the year. "Can get hot and windy during the summer, but will definitely return in the fall," mentions a visitor at Piñon Campground. At Stonewall Lodge & RV Park, campers note "deer walking thru the campground at dusk was a neat site."

Tips for camping with families

Playground access: Several campgrounds offer dedicated children's play areas. "The grounds included cabins, trailer sites, and tent sites, all of which were clean and well cared for," reports a visitor to Circle the Wagons RV Park.

Recreation centers: Some facilities provide indoor entertainment options during inclement weather. "The rec center has some entertainment which was a nice bonus," notes a visitor to Aspen Acres Campground.

Star-gazing opportunities: Dark skies away from urban light pollution create ideal conditions for astronomical viewing. "No city lights meant for a lovely starry evening," according to a camper at Aspen Acres Campground.

Tips from RVers

Water quality concerns: Water supply varies between facilities. "All fine for a night except we filled our tank with the most disgusting undrinkable water imaginable. I'd not come back for that reason," warns a visitor to Aspen Acres Campground.

Site spacing: RV parks around Walsenburg offer varying degrees of privacy. "Large camp spots with Large shading trees. Excellent WiFi," notes a camper at Circle the Wagons RV Park. Conversely, at commercial rv parks, "the sites are stacked right on top of each other. We could barely fit our 24 ft rig in our spot."

Power connections: Check electrical requirements before arrival. "Our port is at the back and the outlet was way up front. To reach, we had to set up near the front of the site which limited our parking," advises an RVer at Aspen Acres. Sites at commercial rv parks Walsenburg offers typically provide 30-amp service, though 50-amp is available at select locations.
