North Fork Purgatiore River

Within San Isabel National Forest, North Fork Purgatiore River offers dispersed camping along a creek corridor accessed by dirt road. The US Forest Service manages this area where campers can choose between free dispersed sites and a developed campground further up the road.

Multiple cleared sites sit near the creek, with the most popular spot positioned directly alongside the water. Brittany M. notes "all seem to have been recently cleared and maintained" with clear signage marking where the sites begin. The road sees regular traffic despite the remote location. Campers report hearing the creek's constant flow from waterside sites.

Access requires driving past wildlife area signs that prohibit camping - those restrictions apply only to the initial entrance area. The dispersed sites come first along the route, while the paid Purgatoire Campground sits at the road's end. Wildlife sightings occur regularly throughout the drainage. Trail access provides hiking options from the developed area.

Road conditions vary from flat sections to bumpy stretches, manageable for most vehicles. Sites accommodate both drive-in and walk-in camping, with toilets and dump station access available. The area works well for campers wanting creek access without developed campground fees, though visitors should pack out all trash as maintenance varies between sites.

Beautiful views all around

This place is a great place to camp disperse camping. There’s a few areas that have free campgrounds and then further up is a campground that is $25 a night in the beginning if you go past the main entrance where it’s a wildlife area that says campsites are prohibited. You go past that and there are campgrounds and campsites that you could stay overnight. Perfect little area. We were there with our family great place.

Trashy

The camper before me didn’t bother take their trash with them. That’s highly uncalled for. It was late afternoon and I didn’t have time to look for another place.

Well Maintained

Beautiful area and site. There are multiple sites, and all seem to have been recently cleared and maintained. There is a sign right where the sites start. The specific site that is the coordinates on Dyrt is right next to the creek and a great spot. The road is somewhat busy for being so far back. Don't go too far or you will hit the campsite that you have to pay for.

I wish I had more time to stay

Words can't begin to describe this place. Simply beautiful, peaceful, and one with nature. We stayed right next to the river. We sat by the fire and just enjoyed the sounds of the river.

Real nice area

Can’t ask for a better dispersed camping area. Don’t get confused by the state area, drive up the dirt Roy’s until you see Forest Service. There is an established campground at the end of the road with a pretty hike

Dispersed area is free if you go to the developed area it’s $25 per night i believe

Great campground!

Beautiful river and lots of wildlife. Drive past the wildlife area sign that says no camping. That sign is only for the entranced area. On down the road you will see the entrance and pay station for the campgrounds. Gorgeous! Nice trail to hike as well.
