      Twin Peaks Dispersed Campground- Colorado

      Love love love!

Easily one of my favorite places to camp in Colorado! It’s a must stay every year for me. Killer views, great hiking, beach days and a peaceful location.

      Beautiful view

Gorgeous views, relaxing and very kind, courteous staff. Dog park, hot tubs, laundry, all you can eat pancakes (very reasonably priced) well worth the so steep drive on way up to 9,000 ft.

      Gore Creek Campground

So good, I don’t want to tell you about it.

Gore Creek Campground is a true gem of the National Forest Service. If you are looking for a great boondocking location that is close to great trails and breathtaking views, this just might be the place for you. The entrance to the campground is ~2 miles off of I-70 Exit 180 on Bighorn Road. Only 10 minutes from Vail Village and 25 minutes from Frisco.

We stayed in Site #8, which provided plenty of room for our 22’ travel trailer and pickup. The sites each have a large picnic table and fire ring.

Pit toilets are spread through the campground and were very clean and well maintained. The campground hosts do a great job of keeping everything tidy and looking great. They also have bundles of firewood for sale for $7 at their site just inside the entrance to the campground.

I can’t say enough about this place. It’s probably my favorite spot to camp in Colorado. I almost didn’t post this review for fear of the secret getting out.

      Parry Peak — Psicc

Great campground, close to the pass and lots of hiking.

Some spots close to the road but it gets quiet at night as Independence pass is not heavily trafficked after dark.  It is in a great location, close to Twin Lakes but also all the hiking up the pass.  All first come first serve.  Pets are allowed, we had our dog with us.

      Sun Outdoors Rocky Mountain

      Great for families/pets

River Run is our favorite place to stay when visiting RMNP. We have stayed here on two occasions and will be bringing family with us this July. Great dog parks, bike trails, bowling alley, arcade, swimming pools, playgrounds and very clean laundry rooms. They also have activities planned during your stay. The RV sites are well spaced, although it is a newer campground so landscaping is young. We have also stayed in a 2 bedroom villa, but had to leave early due to wildfires. My kids are always excited to visit River Run.

I’m not even proud of how much I loved this place

I’m a mountain girl! Like grab your back pack and hike in! Then we had kids and splurged on a camper... and now this place has me over here laying pool side... drink in hand, head over heels about glamping. Seriously I loved this so much. They have an amazing pool! Bowling alley, arcade, restaurant, bars (yes more than one!) they had live music, they have fishing, and dog parks, bike rentals, daily trash pick up from your campsite, firewood delivery, play grounds, golf carts... it is a little close together with out any trees of coverage BUT the pros far (FAR FAR FAR) out weigh that one con.

Fall River Reservoir Dispersed Camping Trail

      My first Colorado camping spot!

I first camped in Colorado last year with a friend and we chose this dispersed due to it being close to travel too- yet still dispersed. I’ve come back 4 other times to camp here!

This trail does require some 4x4 action to get to the top. Lots of rocks, bumps, and pools of water to travel through to get anywhere.

The trail has a decent amount of dispersed sites along the way up to the top, although you can not camp the first mile or two, they are residential.

Even at the end of the trail, next to the reservoir there are some great spots to camp at. And a hike around the reservoir would show you that you could even do a bit of backpacking if you wanted to camp by a waterfall for the night.

This place has become a favorite camping spot of mine, and a place I love to bring friends. Quite clean, very scenic, and a beautiful creek rushing by most of the camp sites. There is also a really cool teepee stand waiting to be used to camp under at the top!

      Denver West-Central City KOA

      Nicest KOA we've been to

And in fact I believe they were KOA of the year 2023 or 2024. More expensive than we're used to, but has nice amenities. Sites level with concrete pads, fairly large. Some space between with trees. Nice metal patio furniture provided at each site(chairs, table, fire pit). Has decent showers, hot tubs, and off leash dog park. Inexpensive pancake breakfast and pizza/wings to your site are available, also an onsite store. Kind of at the top of a rise, so good views but also kind of chilly for July (60s/40s). Massive thunderstorms with hail and heavy rain two evengings (CO mountains tend to get afternoon t-storms). Communicate via text to let you know about goings on. Good radio station out of Idaho Springs KYGT 102.7 and 103.9

      Halfmoon East — Psicc

Great For Hitting the 14ers Early

This area is beautiful with access to Halfmoon Creek and tucked away under groves of pines. It’s just over a half-hour drive from Leadville so if you ran out of supplies or just want a better breakfast than oatmeal with boiled water, you’re in luck. There’s designated fire rings and many of the campsites can fit multiple cars if you decided carpooling wasn’t an option. When I camp here again, I will definitely be looking for campsites that are away from the road a bit more. There’s a few that are down a modest hill closer to the creek. The reason for this is this area is super popular for hikers climbing Mt. Massive and Mt. Elbert. (The tallest and second tallest peaks in Colorado) You will experiences cars driving through late at night and even super early in the morning to get to the trailheads. I’m talking starting at 3:00am…I know because my tent was blasted with headlights from numerous cars rolling through. Be aware if you bring kids or pets as well because some cars do not drive through at a respectful speed. Overall it’s a great place to camp, especially if you need a quick weekend getaway.

    Guide to Minturn

Near Minturn, Colorado, dispersed camping areas range from 8,000 to 10,500 feet in elevation across the White River National Forest. The region experiences dramatic temperature swings even in summer months, with overnight lows commonly dropping 30-40 degrees below daytime highs. Most camping locations near Minturn require permits between May and October, with some areas implementing strict reservation systems during peak season.

    What to do

Fishing in small streams: The area around Homestake Road Dispersed offers excellent fishing opportunities for brook trout. "Fished the creek and caught a trout, strolled around the grounds, it's one of my most favorite camping memories," reports Erin G., while another camper notes "The area is surrounded by rivers to fish, many hiking trails, backpacking and some climbing."

Mountain biking on established trails: From Gore Creek Campground, access multiple biking routes. "Lots of hiking and biking trails located close by. And Vail pass for hiking and biking," says Kelly B. Another visitor reports, "Close to the bike trail which was nice, rode up to vail pass. Beautiful."

Wildlife observation: The region's forests host diverse wildlife. One camper at Homestake Road reported: "During our stay, we were woken up early in the morning by a mountain lion, saw 3 moose cross the river about 100 yards from the camper, and saw a huge mule deer buck hanging out in the bushes near the river several nights in a row."

    What campers like

Secluded sites away from crowds: Rock Creek Designated Dispersed Camping provides more isolated camping experiences. "We pulled in around noon and barely snagged one of the last open sites. Ours was higher up the road—still accessible, but just rough enough to turn a few others back. That bit of elevation gave us a quiet pocket," explains one reviewer.

Natural water features: Campers frequently mention the streams and water access. "Each spot had a small path right to the beach," notes a visitor to Peak One Campground. Another camper at Rock Creek describes: "Perfect setting with views of snow capped mountains with a gurgling creek running next to camp."

Spacious campsites: Many pet-friendly locations around Minturn feature large camping areas. One visitor to Halfmoon Campground notes, "The campground has seven sites fairly spread out from one another... Very peaceful, secluded, great fire pit, decent bathroom."

    What you should know

Road conditions vary significantly: Access roads to several sites require caution. At Red Sandstone primitive camping area, visitors warn: "The road up was a bit rough but nothing too bad, if you take it slow you could probably make it up in anything." Another notes, "Road is definitely slightly rocky but very doable."

Seasonal availability limitations: Many sites close during winter months. "The road and campground usually open late June and close late to early September," explains one camper about Halfmoon Campground, which is typical of higher elevation sites near Minturn.

Early arrival recommended: Competition for sites intensifies during peak periods. "By 1 p.m., it felt like a game of musical chairs. Drivers looping, turning around, hoping someone packed up," describes a Rock Creek camper, while another adds, "If you're aiming for a summer weekend, earlier is better—and be ready for company."

    Tips for camping with families

Look for sites with water access: Camp Hale Memorial provides family-friendly options. "The spot was awesome, close to a creek, fire ring, picnic table, flat areas for a tent, decent size so you could have a few tents on site," mentions Erin G. Camp Hale's historical significance also provides educational opportunities.

Consider noise levels: Highway proximity affects some campgrounds. A Camp Hale visitor noted, "The biggest drawback of this campsite is its proximity to Hwy 24. The traffic noise is very noticeable and loud at times. It did quiet down quite a bit at night."

Pack for temperature changes: Mountain weather can change rapidly, requiring proper preparation for families. "It was pretty chilly that night so we crept off to bed early but woke up in the morning to the best scenery," reports one Camp Hale camper, highlighting the need for warm clothing even in summer.

    Tips for RVers

Size-appropriate site selection: Many dispersed camping areas have limited space for larger vehicles. At Homestake Road Dispersed, a reviewer cautions: "Each spot is of course unique, some are small and some large enough for RV's and trailers, though I have not seen many RV's in the area and I would not recommend it based on road width and lack of turn arounds."

Solar power considerations: With limited hookups around Minturn, alternative power sources become important. A Camp Hale visitor shared: "Our battery on our trailer did fine and was at 100% when we departed with our solar panels. No water or electricity as this is a campground."

Research dump station locations: Most pet-friendly camping areas near Minturn lack sanitary facilities. A Gore Creek Campground visitor notes facilities are "amazingly clean," but doesn't mention dump stations, suggesting the need to plan waste disposal stops before arriving.
