Best Dog-Friendly Camping near Castle Pines, CO

Chatfield State Park Campground maintains well-spaced sites that accommodate pets across its four separate camping loops. All sites permit dogs on leash, with full hookups available in Loop A and electric hookups in Loop B. Campers have noted the campground's grounds are exceptionally clean and raked before arrival, offering plenty of room for pets to move around within each campsite's boundaries. The 25-acre off-leash dog park within the state park provides ample space for dogs to run and play freely. Sites are level with paved pads and include gravel picnic areas with fire pits. Each pet-friendly loop offers access to clean restrooms and shower facilities that accept coins (50 cents for 3 minutes). Pets must be leashed at all times outside the designated off-leash area, and owners are expected to clean up after their animals.

Rampart Range Recreation Area and Buffalo Creek Recreation Area both offer free dispersed camping options that welcome pets in a more primitive setting. Visitors with dogs can access numerous hiking trails directly from these campgrounds, providing natural exploration opportunities without the developed amenities of state parks. The beach areas at Chatfield Reservoir allow dogs in certain sections, though campers should be aware the swimming areas have rocky terrain and boats operate on the water. Early morning wildlife sightings, including deer visiting campsites, are common at Chatfield. Seasonal considerations affect pet comfort, with limited shade available during hot summer months making canopies essential for pet owners. Nearby pet supply stores in Littleton provide convenient access to forgotten essentials, while the campground's location just 30 minutes from downtown Denver offers easy access to emergency veterinary services if needed.

    Chatfield State Park Campground

Popular and large campground near the lake

As it is very close to the city, the temperature stays consistent with Denver temps. So in the summer, it will not be as cool as some mountain spots. That being said, it is very easy to get to and you’ll have the lake right there to cool off!

Entrance into the state park is about $7/day. There is a dog park within the state park that allows off leash and has some ponds the dogs can swim in. Entrance to the dog park is $2.

    Diamond Campground & RV Park

Large Park Near Colorado Springs, Pikes Peak & More

This park is definitely well visited, but for good reason. It is located in Woodland Park, a lovely mountain town about 30-40 min. outside Colorado Springs. Lots of sites, mostly RV but there is a nice tent only section with a good number of spaces. We stayed overnight in early July and actually pitched our tent next to our family RV underneath the awning, safe from the summer showers that seem to pass thru almost daily in the summer months. Lots of amenities, including parks with play equipment for the kiddos, a dog park, nice bathrooms & showers.

    Cherry Creek State Park Campground

A piece of nature tucked into the city.

Located in the city, but once you’re in the park you don’t feel like you’re in the city at all!!! The RV spots have full hookups and are nice and spacious, as are the neighbors. We were able to set up a tent too! Great place to stroll and relax. Beautiful sunsets. Clean bathrooms and laundry facilities with a little vending machine.

A great place for camping (RV and tent spots), fishing, wildlife/nature viewing, hiking, boating (all water activities), has a swim beach, marina, off leash dog park, shooting range, horse stables that you can do a beautiful hour horseback ride.

FEES: Campsites $41 full hookup, basic campsite $28, daily park pass is $11, annual park pass $83, daily dog park pass $3, annual dog park pass $25, and group camping is available too.

    Cherry Creek State Park Campground

    City Camping at it's Best

Great campground here at this state park. We have always stayed in the Arapahoe Group Loop for holiday weekends. Arapahoe Group Loop has a great pavillion with outdoor kitchen and bathroom. Overall Camper amenities are great and very clean. Many well shaded individual sites are available. Campsites are far from other park amenities like Dog Park, Shooting Range, Marina. Swim beach is a 10 minute walk-able distance from campground. Recommend driving to get around the park.

    Cherry Creek State Park Campground

Super busy but great for dogs

This is a location that you only camp if you literally don't have any worries about being around people. It is ALWAYS packed due to the tons of hiking trails, huge dog park, and water access.

I taught kayaking to little ones here and it was always a fight to get into the park, get to the water, and not get run over by boats and unexperienced (or entitled) people.

The campground is well maintained but it sit really worth being able to be basically in a metropolitan city? For me I'll go somewhere more nature friendly and less crowded.

BUT it is excellent for dogs. We love taking out dogs here because they can play in water, run their hearts out, and hang out with other dogs. It is pricey to get into the park though. $80 for a year pass to the state parks and another $25 for the dog park fees.

    Chatfield State Park Campground

    So much to do!

Chatfield is such a great park; I’ve spent so much time biking, kayaking, paddleboarding, spending time with family; picnics areas are even great to have lunch. The dog park is by far the best. Off leash- so much room; well taken care of and big lake for the dogs to swim. And it’s close to Denver - so we go here weekly!

Winter camping requires preparation for overnight temperatures that regularly drop below freezing from October through April.

What to do

Mountain biking at Buffalo Creek Recreation Area: The trail network connects with the Colorado Trail and offers routes for various skill levels. What campers like

Secluded sites at Rampart Range: Most dispersed sites offer good distance from neighbors. "We went up for a quick weekend trip and it was perfect, lots of campsites along the road and not too close together. The road was decent to drive on a few bumps but nothing crazy. The sites were clean and well maintained," shares Emma H. from Rampart Range Recreation Area.

Wildlife viewing opportunities: Early mornings provide the best chance to see local wildlife. "My husband and I stayed in this beautiful campground in 2018 June. The wild life was beautiful, the facilities were clean, and the staff was friendly and helpful," reports Cassandra T. from Chatfield State Park Campground.

Clean facilities at Indian Creek: The campground maintains basic but well-kept amenities. "This is a lovely campground with a very friendly host. Our campsite had a very nice, large picnic table and a fire pit with an adjustable grate. It also had a grill and a very nice flat area for our tent," says Rachel H. from Indian Creek Campground.

Weekday solitude: Most campgrounds report significant differences in crowds between weekdays and weekends. "We came up Sunday and drove around for an hour trying to find a spot. It was so busy with campers and there were dirt bikers everywhere! Sunday evening it cleared up and we were the only ones there mon-tues!"
