What campers like
Urban proximity with rural feel: Sweetwater Summit Regional Park balances accessibility with natural surroundings. "We visited during the questival race, campground was easy to find and easily accessible. Get away without going too far. Love it!" shares Danitza C.S. about Sweetwater Summit Regional Park.
Clean facilities: Dos Picos County Park maintains well-kept camping areas and amenities. "The well-maintained campground boasts paved pads for most sites, making setup a breeze. Each site comes equipped with a fire ring and picnic table, perfect for cozy campfires and outdoor meals," notes Colleen D. at Dos Picos County Park.
Water features: Many campers value the lakes and pools available at campgrounds near Jamul. "We had a campsite on the outer loop (9) that backed up to an overlook of a field. If you don't need a pull through, definitely get one of the outer loop spaces - they're way less cramped," advises Chrysti P. about Sweetwater Regional Park.
What you should know
Limited cell service: Some campgrounds have connectivity challenges. At Thousand Trails Pio Pico, "You won't have the best cell coverage but if your looking for a quite getaway from society this is the place to be," says Vanessa P.
Reservations required: Most popular sites book months in advance. "We stay there in the off season. Love being there the spaces are big I generally stay for 2 to 5 days bring supplies no stores near by and they lock the gate so if you go for a evening in town you will be walking back from the gate," warns Papa G. about Silver Strand State Beach.
Noise considerations: Some campgrounds experience road or aircraft noise. "Took the family out here to check out the blue glowing algae and they loved it. Went swimming a few other times. Can see some dolphins in the water and it has some great shells along the beach!" reports Paul G., who found Silver Strand's natural features worth the occasional noise.
Tips for camping with families
Playground access: Several campgrounds offer child-friendly play areas. "Great place for kids. There are about 60 camping spaces, mostly partial hook-ups (electricity and water) and a few full hook-ups (electricity, water, and sewer) in the original campground," mentions Baja H. about Sweetwater Summit Regional Park.

Tips from RVers
Hookup variations: Different campgrounds offer various levels of service. "This is one of the nicest kOA campgrounds we have visited. They recently redid the pool area and it's like a resort! Only drawback is that the campground is about a 15 minute drive from the beach. It's a great place to stay to explore San Diego!" shares Jen H. about San Diego Metro KOA.
Level sites: Finding campgrounds with level concrete pads improves the RV experience. "Great pull thru sites on level concrete pads. Full hookups. Many hiking trails and bicycle trails," notes Joni M. about Sweetwater Summit Regional Park.
Utility access: Understand which sites offer full hookups versus partial. "We had a pull through but no room with parked cars to get our 42' 5th wheel in- so we backed it in and it fit nicely. It's a clean park and has a nice pool and laundry room," explains Douglas T. about Circle RV Resort, highlighting adaptability when needed.
