The description says it all… almost…😉 The campsite is reasonably priced and was very clean. The lake is SO cute and we walked the path around it several times which morphs from dirt to roots to packed rocks to sand. There's also a little tiny beach on one side of the path you can throw down a chair and relax. Not sure about swimming. The noise from the dunes area and all the sand toys was kinda fun to listen to during the day and it quieted down relatively early which was nice. From the roadway, you could get to the beach but not the water as that stretch is for the off-road vehicles. There's water and vault toilets available as well as trash service. There's not a lot to do outside of that but it was a nice place to stay. Happy Camping!
Being a new visitor to WA, we wanted to spend our first night in the middle of nowhere and this did it.
A bit of a climb for our truck camper so 4x4 was handy. There were some lower tree branches but easy to (delicately) pull to the side to get by. The road is 1 lane, gravel but nicely maintained. Not many areas to pull over so go slow and prepare to back up if necessary.
It's first come, first serve with no hookups or trash service but there is a bathroom. There's a couple spots for a bigger truck camper like ours and a handful of secluded tent sites you can walk to from the parking area. The tent sites we saw had a fire ring (fire ban in place right now) and a picnic table all nestled in the trees and ferns. There's 1 main place to fish from and several little nooks as well. There's a LOT of old, picturesque trees/ stumps in the lake, hence the name. A gentleman we met said the lake is stocked and our son caught some rainbow trout (approx 8 inches) so we put them back to get bigger for the next person.
There's also paths to enjoy a walk through the trees.
As far as cell service, we had great Verizon signal and there's a cell tower over the top of the trees so that explains that. 🙂
You need a Discovery Pass to camp here but it's either $10 a night at various campgrounds around WA (so I read) or $30 for the annual pass.
Enjoy and please pack it in, pack it out. It was a really nice campsite so let's keep it that way. Thanks!

We headed out for a family b-day trip and wanted to see if we could get a spot inside Joshua Tree. When we learned that all the camping (including the disbursed sites) were full IN JT, (which we honestly expected) this was the closest place to stop for the night. It's a huge dry lake bed and not much to do but it was nice for the kids and dogs to run around and not have to worry about scorpions or snakes where we were. We were able to find a pretty level spot regardless and made it a fun evening. We were pretty far from anyone else and didn't hear people during the night. A regular RV made it in fine. It's bumpy due to the dry dirt, but not a challenge. Verizon cell service was perfect and no trash lying around. It's nothing fancy but a free place is better than no place. Pack it in, Pack it out. Happy Camping!

This area is pretty trippy going from volcanic rock and flows to various brush to the dry, beautifully cracked dirt. We landed here and drove thru the FF campground, which we knew was closed but wanted to check it out, and pulled out onto the dry lake bed area to spend the night.
At first, we weren't sure if we liked it but after we set up and took a long walk around the area, we were digging it. Perfect for bike or dirt scooter riding or just running around on the lake bed. Perfect for dogs and kids. Gets dusty so your rig will get a bit dirty. It can get windy but we had a great night. The road is maintained but a smidge bumpy and uneven but should be easy for most cars. Area was quiet and no very little trash. Great to watch the light change the hillsides.
Verizon cell service was great and stars were bright. Saw a jackrabbit while there…thank goodness my dog didn't see him! HA!
Disbursed so no amenities so please pack in, pack out. Happy Camping!

We headed here to both see the area and camp for a few days and to be scouts for a future trip to celebrate a family member's birthday who wanted to do some fishing on his b-day.
The first thing we noticed was how low the water level was…bummer! Because of that, any fishing would have been casting into or over trees that are now exposed.
The area is exactly like the pics; a wide open beach so there's space to spread out but not too much to do for active kids due to the aforementioned water level. Verizon cell service was non-existent and lots of cow poop, which we were aware of in the area. Also it's right on the road which was, if you're looking for silence, there's decent traffic on the roadway.
It's free which is awesome and if the water level goes up a bit, I would love to try it again. Disbursed to please pack in and pack out. Happy Camping!

We heard and read a lot about this place and couldn't pass up the chance to see it for ourselves. We were not let down. This area makes you feel like you are on another planet. The mountains, huge rock formations and expansive valleys make you realize how small we are. It was beautiful to say the least.
There was snow on the mountains (Mt. Whitney) and the daytime temp hovered around 60 degrees. At night, it was around freezing but the bonfire made it comfortable. The moon was almost full while we were there which made everything light up including the mountains so the view was fantastic even when dark. It did get windy our second night so we hunkered in our camper so plan for wind if you visit.
The drive out of Lone Pine was easy. The roads getting through Alabama Hills were very well maintained and there wasn't a shortage of places to camp. We had to drive in pretty far, but happened to land on an amazing spot. We have a truck camper but there were cars and larger trailers that made it to camping spots so it's simple. We went out on a Thursday and there were several people there (very far apart) so arriving on a Friday may lead to a challenge finding a spot but if you don't mind driving back further you shouldn't be disappointed.
Other than climbing rocks (which was quite the workout and fun!) there's not a lot for kids to do however, there's not a lot of cactus or other things that want to stick ya so let the kids explore.
Pack it in/pack it out and leave it like you find it. This area is absolutely gorgeous so enjoy and appreciate. Happy Camping!
We attended a camper rally Feb 10-14, 2021 and this also happened to be the first time we took our new rig out on the road. The drive to the spot from the 10 was easy and the camping spots (pull out areas) are nice and flat. It was quiet and the stars were clear and beautiful. During the day, there were several off road vehicles the drove by as where we camped was just off the dirt road so you may want to pull off the road as far as possible since it's very dusty. We brought our son's bike and we were glad we did. Lots of places to ride and gave him something to do.
Great place to walk and explore but if you have a dog, please keep them close as there are a LOT of cactus and big thorns everywhere. Our dog got wrapped up in some and it was quite the moment but he's OK. It's also very rocky so watch those tender paws.
The site's close to the town of Quartzsite which is cute and quirky but has everything you need; water, dump station, food, etc. Noise was non-existent at Roadrunner and we had a great time.
No amenities so pack in and pack out and please, leave no trace. This area was very clean so let's leave it that way. Happy Camping!

Ended up back in Quartzsite for a family birthday and it was cool to know the area and where to park ours and a rental RV. I truly dig this place. We parked further back from the dirt road this time so didn't have to worry about closing our camper door every time someone drove by in a off-road vehicle. Also had boots for our dog to keep the paws safe. He's still getting used to them. =)
