Homesteader Park offers free camping for pets in Powell, Wyoming with approximately 12 pull-through RV spots and additional curbside and dispersed tent camping areas. Dogs are welcome throughout the grounds, which include clean bathrooms, water filling stations, picnic tables with grills, and both rain shelter and open-air options. The park layout provides ample space for walking pets around the grounds, though some visitors note their dogs occasionally find wildlife remnants in bushes near the fishing area. This pet-friendly site sits adjacent to an aquatic center, playground, and recreation area with baseball fields.

Deaver Reservoir provides another pet-friendly option with beautiful camping spots alongside a scenic reservoir about 20 minutes from Powell. The area features approximately 20-25 camping spots accommodating rigs up to 35 feet, dual vault toilets, metal fire pits, garbage cans, and picnic tables. Dogs can explore the shoreline with their owners, though the site gets extremely windy at times, making it less suitable for tent camping with pets. The dispersed camping area provides excellent star-gazing opportunities away from light pollution, making it ideal for overnight stays with pets while traveling to nearby attractions.

      Buffalo Bluff RV Park

Good Short Stay Option in Cody

This review is based on a short term versus destination RV park point of view. Our arrival email stated not to arrive before 3:00 PM and we were coming in from about an hour away so we called the office to see if early arrival would be permitted. Since we were arriving on a Monday, well into September, our site was empty and we were told to come on in, which was nice. Check in was super fast and we proceeded to pull through site 18 with FHUs. Utilities were placed in the middle of the site which was nice. Buffalo Bluff is a fairly new campground(CG) and we were impressed with its cleanliness. We received a good amount of OTA stations plus they had cable with decent channel selections. Since there are no trees within the park, satellite would not be a problem. There’s a small fenced dog-park and plenty of area to walk the dogs. We received 4 bars on Verizon. We enjoyed our short stay and would consider staying here again.

      Sunlight Rangers Cabin

Loved the cabins, and great hiking!

I really enjoyed my stay at the Sunlight Rangers Cabin. I am a huge outdoors person, so coming here was perfect for me. There are some awesome hiking trails that lead you to some great views and scenery. The campground is located within the Shoshone National Forest and near Sunlight Creek. The scenery that surrounds the cabin is beautiful- lots of trees and mountains. The cabin was really nice, clean and well kept. You do have to call ahead of time to make your reservations because they do not take walk-ins. You do need to bring your own food and supplies because the campground does not provide that. You also are responsible for cleaning the cabin before you leave- they did tell us that you will be charged if you leave the place a mess. They do provide some cleaning products. Also, no pets are allowed. Thankfully we asked when we were booking the place, or else we would have brought our dog. We stayed in a 2 bedroom cabin, and had 4 people. The two bedroom cabin was plenty of room for the 4 of us. The cabins have all the amenities you need- a kitchen (table, stove, fridge), full bathrooms, living room (with fireplace), and beds. You do need to bring your own sheets and sleeping bags. During my stay, we hiked both days. We did Bonneville Pass and Jade Lakes. Jade Lakes was a pretty easy hike, however Bonneville Pass was definitely harder. Great views for both! I would definitely recommend hiking at least once during your stay. The Shoshone National Forest offers a great variety of hikes for all levels. I would just do your research beforehand so you don't get stuck doing a hike you can't handle. I would recommend this campground (however, it is about $150 a night, but worth it!).

      Elk Fork Campground

      Bearly Bear

Open year round  Services discontinued the end of September through May

      Fees:  $10.00

      Stay limit 16 days

Pit toilet   trash   fire ring bear box picnic table   camp host

GRIZZLY bear area so be bear aware bear spray is a very good idea and be prepared

Sites are flat but they are very small.  Pets on a leash.  The backdrop is amazing.  Campground is on the road to Yellowstone and you really can't beat the price unless you find a boondocking spot somewhere else.  There are horse corrals and trailer parking near.

Directions:  From Cody, travel west on US Highway14/16/20 for 28 miles to the campground.

      Wapiti Campground

Between Cody, WY and Yellowstone Park

This campground is about equal distances from the east entrance to Yellowstone park and Cody, WY. By Wyoming standards, it's a large campground (40 sites, many with electric hookup). The campground does permit tent camping, which the campgrounds closer to the east entrance do not. That being said, it lacks the intimacy and atmosphere of many Wyoming campgrounds. One must endure the sounds of generators and the highway. It's definitely a good place to camp while getting from Point A to Point B, but much better options exist for a relaxing camping trip.

      Sage Creek Campground

      Wildlife galore! FREE

We loved loved loved this campground! It is just an open circle and you can pitch a tent anywhere or car camp around it. You don’t usually find FREE camping in the middle of a National Park so this was awesome. Bison walked right through the campground, prairie dogs surrounded it and coyotes howled in the (not so) distance. There are covered picnic tables which are nice in the heat of the summer.

      Parkside Campground

Nestled along a creek at the base of the Beartooth highway

This is a beautiful campground! The Beartooth highway starts going up to the west right here. You must drive this route but plan lots of time for photos.

The campground stretches out along the Wyoming creek. Let your eyes go upwards and glimpse the mountains around you. This campground is in the valley. Large sites are well spread out and wander through the wooded area. Drive through and select the one you like and then fill out the form. Vault toilets and garbage bins are spread out too. We found quite a few open sites but many were reserved. If this one fills up there are a few more down the road.

The trailhead for the Wyoming creek trail is at the start of camp. We saw plenty of cars parked here for day hiking. This is a great place.

      Greybull KOA

One of the best for an overnight stay

I can’t think of one negative comment, even the towns 9 o’clock curfew alarm was charming. The concrete sites are level and spacious with tables, fire pits and charcoal grills. The grounds are well cared with a small playground and dog run. Staff are friendly and helpful. There is a paved walk just steps out of the campground where we took a walk and watched deer. We only stayed one night but wish that all our campgrounds could be like this one.

      Yellowstone Valley Inn & RV

      Beautiful Mountain Scenery

Great find on our way to Yellowstone.  early May when there are limited campgrounds open this one is.  Great amenities Full hookups, Hot Tub, private bath and showers, pool (good for later in the summer Brrr) restaurant , lounge, store for supplies and a welcoming staff.  Dog friendly and beautiful scenery surrounds you.  wake up to herds of prong horn sheep and elk in the pastures around the campground.  A river runs along the edge of the campground and we are told it is great native trout fishing.  We will be returning for sure.

    Guide to Powell

Dispersed camping opportunities near Powell, Wyoming extend into the surrounding public lands, with sites located at elevations between 4,000-5,000 feet. The area experiences dramatic seasonal changes, with summer temperatures often exceeding 90°F while winter brings snowfall and freezing conditions. What to do

Fishing access points: Several campgrounds provide direct access to fishing. At Buffalo Bill State Park, campers can enjoy the reservoir, though one visitor notes the fishing is "not great fishing" but the compensating factor is there are "great sites to look at along the way." The park offers both dry and hook-up sites starting at $17.

Wildlife viewing: The Cody BLM Dispersed area offers excellent opportunities for wildlife spotting. One camper shared: "We saw some prong horns on the way in too!" Another visitor noted, "July 1 was dry and there were herds of deer and a small pack of coyotes wailing in the distance at night."

Stargazing opportunities: The remote locations provide exceptional night sky viewing. At Cody BLM Dispersed, a camper reported: "We got a great spot with amazing views of the sunset. It was very quiet at night. There is a highway to the north, but the hills block most of the noise." The lack of light pollution makes these areas perfect for astronomy enthusiasts.

    What campers like

Budget-friendly options: The Lovell Camper Park offers free camping with donation-based payment. One reviewer explained: "It's hard to believe that a town creates a free campground for anybody to use. This is well laid out with RV and tent sites. Water, restrooms and showers are all available." Another noted it's "nestled between a local play park and a ballpark and residential homes."

Scenic mountain views: Buffalo Bill State Park offers dramatic landscapes. A camper described it as having "a beautiful Mountain View on both sides, and easy access to firewood for a small donation." Another visitor mentioned the "great views of reservoir and mountains."

Clean facilities: Many campgrounds maintain high standards of cleanliness. At Buffalo Bluff RV Park, a visitor shared: "Clean and very nice bathrooms with showers. Like home. Internet is good. Away from noisy interstates." Another reviewer at Lovell Camper Park praised the "showers and bathrooms as clean as home."

    What you should know

Weather conditions: The area experiences extreme conditions, particularly wind. At Deaver Reservoir, one camper warned: "Also, very, very windy up here. Not recommended for tents." Understanding seasonal weather patterns helps in planning appropriate camping gear.

Site limitations: Some campgrounds have specific restrictions. At Billings Village RV Park, a camper noted: "Only hiccup was how low to the ground the electric was—we had to bend the cord to connect." Another mentioned it's "tightly-spaced without so much as a place for more than one camper to park while checking in."

Noise factors: Several campgrounds experience noise from nearby roads or trains. A visitor at Absaroka Bay RV remarked: "Very clean friendly spot with full hook ups. Not much green space at all but it was great for our overnight spot before heading into Yellowstone. Quite a bit of road noise, even through the night."
