    SUMMARY PRESENTED BYT-Mobile

Moorcroft, Wyoming serves as a gateway to diverse camping experiences in northeastern Wyoming, with campgrounds spanning from within town limits to scenic areas like Devils Tower and Keyhole State Park. The Wyoming RV Park provides basic accommodations directly in Moorcroft, while more expansive camping options exist at Devils Tower approximately 30 miles northeast, including Belle Fourche Campground within the national monument and Devils Tower KOA at the entrance. Keyhole State Park, located about 20 miles northwest of Moorcroft, offers multiple campgrounds including Tatanka, Coulter Bay, Wind Creek, and Homestead with options for tent camping, RV sites with hookups, and cabin rentals.

Road access to most campgrounds remains reliable throughout the camping season, with paved routes to major destinations and some gravel roads leading to more remote sites. "Wyoming state parks seem to be hostile to non residents. It's cheaper to stay at a regular RV park and you have better amenities," noted one camper regarding fee structures at state park facilities. Most campgrounds in the region are seasonal, typically operating from May through September or October, though specific opening dates vary based on weather conditions. Cell service is generally available near Devils Tower and Moorcroft but becomes limited in more remote areas of the public lands. Reservations are recommended for KOA and state park campgrounds, while Belle Fourche Campground at Devils Tower operates on a first-come, first-served basis.

The camping experience near Moorcroft varies dramatically between the commercial areas in town and the natural settings at surrounding public lands. Devils Tower National Monument provides the most distinctive camping backdrop according to visitor reviews. "Literally steps away from Devils Tower, could see it through the window in my tent," remarked one visitor to Belle Fourche Campground. Keyhole State Park offers waterfront camping with access to boating and fishing, with one reviewer describing it as "a fantastic, quiet little place to get away." Sites at developed campgrounds typically include picnic tables and fire rings, though fire restrictions may apply during dry periods. Wildlife viewing opportunities include prairie dogs near Devils Tower and deer throughout the region.

      Hartman Rock Dispersed Site

      Serious solitude

Needed to get to a higher elevation and some shade with consistent winds, and I found it. Last spot on the left at end of the road, or at least the fairly easy part. Very isolated and quiet, save for the birds and the breeze.

      Devils Tower KOA

      Nice KOA

They were so helpful when we had to change our reservation due to truck issues. The campground is nice, with a pool and hot showers. Each shower is unisex and accessed independently of the washroom/toilets. Very clean and hot water. All sites have a good view of devils tower and the campsite is located just outside the entrance to the monument. However, shade is limited in most sites and as it was very hot (102) when we were here we ate our meals in the camper in A/C The dog park is nice with toys and water available. If you need groceries, the closest place is 30 miles away (Sundance). My son enjoyed the pool and meeting other folks. I spent the time with a local mechanic trouble shooting issues with my tow vehicle. If in the area and have issues with your tow vehicle I highly recommend Josh at H&H

Tatanka Campground — Keyhole State Park

      Nice little state park

This is a nice campground although a bit pricey for nonresidents ($55/night for water & elec). The lake is pretty although there is a lot of vegetation in it. If we were here for more than just one night I would have taken my paddle board out. It was nice to watch the fish jumping in the lake in the early morning. There are trees so you get shade and the sites are not too close together. My site had a large grassy area between the campsite and the lake where I could let the dog run for a bit. I did not check out the toilets or shower house. I would stay here again, it’s not too far off of I90 and I was able to book a site the morning of the night I wanted to stay.

Belle Fourche Campground at Devils Tower — Devils Tower National Monument

Peaceful, spiritual, just know no hook-ups

This is my 3rd visit in 11 years at this non-reservable place. There's something about this national monument that keeps me coming back, and camping here is part of that draw. There are 2 loops, many sites are shaded by huge cottonwoods, 1 running-water bathroom building per loop. Each loop has ADA sites. Sites are large, flat, well spaced and pull-thru, and can accommodate large RVs. The sites are grassy and shade is available for tenters who pay attention to east/west movements. Potable water faucets are sprinkled about (Ha-ha), but none set-up for direct rv fill. Cost (7/26) is $20, or $10 for carded seniors. Generators allowed 8 to 8. *Now here's the important part: come here. Visit this unique national monument that is aways off from the interstate and can only be seen if you come here deliberately. You won't forget it. And the campground never fills up, so plan on staying at least 1 night to see the incredible stars.

      Top 5 Boondocking Spots

We took the first right off Sundance-Warren Peak Rd. after Reuters CG and kept driving til we found a beautiful meadow at the top of a hill at the end of the road. Not big rig friendly but perfect for our van. Beautiful spot, great T-Mobile, and hiking trails abound.

      Hartman Rock Dispersed Site

      Almost perfect

Nice little climb to get up here in a short period of time, easy get to the site in my pickup. My pull spot happens to be maybe 150’ from another camper but it’s on top of a “mountain/hill” with some incredible views poking through the pines. No fires allowed at the moment but the forest sounds are terrific. A deer and her 2 fawns just strolled by me not noticing I was “fawning” over them from inside my topper!

Tatanka Campground — Keyhole State Park

      Showers HORRIBLE !

The SHOWERS/bathrooms are horrible! There was mold up the walls 6 inches. You have to walk about 1/4 miles to get to the shower building and walk on a busy blacktop road because there is NO WALKING PATH BESIDE THE COUNTY BLACKTOP ROAD, very dangerous because there is no shoulder on the road to walk on.

It smells like a sewage spill outside of the bathroom/shower house.

Warning: the showers take quarters, 50 cents at a time and the COIN MACHINE IS ALWAYS BROKEN so bring a LOT of quarters! I tried calling the phone number on the machine and never got any answer.

The vault toilets were extremely dirty and smell awful. The solar powered lights inside the toilets do not work.

The campground is laid out nicely. The lake area next to the campground is beautiful.

A lot of boats and ATV’s are at the campground. People leave big bright lights on ALL NIGHT to shine on their ATV’s and boats!

      Easy Stay

Easy location to get to from Devils Tower or Deadwood/Rushmore/Custer. Once to the top of the mtn via paved road the main camping area is the first right gravel turnout marked with a blue numbered trail post. Sites are all around the loop. We stayed at the first site to the right. We didn’t see anyone else there until morning. It was very windy, some rain and passing thunderstorms on either side of us. There were multiple no burning signs & flags placed in fire rings so we did not test it even though it had just rained. There are no bathrooms/outhouses etc so plan accordingly. Beautiful 360 views from site 1. Would stay again.

    Guide to Moorcroft

Northeast Wyoming camping sites near Moorcroft provide diverse overnight options within driving distance to major attractions. Most campgrounds operate seasonally from May through September, with access via paved and gravel roads depending on location. Temperatures vary significantly, with summer highs averaging 85°F and nighttime lows dropping to 50°F, requiring campers to pack layers even during peak season.

    What to do

Stargazing at Devils Tower: Devils Tower KOA offers excellent night sky viewing opportunities with minimal light pollution. "We picked a site with a view and we didn't regret that one bit! The wide open skies and STARS," notes Mary J., adding that "tent sites are in an open field with a handful of trees" providing unobstructed views.

Watch outdoor movies: At Devils Tower KOA, visitors can enjoy a unique entertainment experience. "They show 'Close Encounters of the Third Kind' every night, outside with the tower in the background. Very cheesy but very cool," reports Julie W.

Fishing access: Keyhole State Park provides multiple fishing spots across its various camping areas. A visitor to Homestead Campground notes, "It was a short walk to the water with decent fishing nearby," while another camper mentions, "If you like fishing, and aren't a skilled fly fisher, definitely bring a good casting rod - fish are all pretty big and aggressive (walleyes, bass, sunfish etc)."

    What campers like

Proximity to monuments: Belle Fourche Campground at Devils Tower provides unmatched monument views. "Most sites offer a gorgeous view of Devils Tower. This is so much more relaxing and quiet than the KOA zoo down the road," writes Sanda A., who calls it "Heaven on Earth."

Spacious sites: Campers frequently mention the generous spacing at many campgrounds near Moorcroft. At Coulter Bay Campground, "The campsites were well-spaced with plenty of shade, and we had enough room to spread out and relax," according to Sayler O., who appreciated that "it didn't feel cramped or noisy."

Clean facilities: Despite basic amenities at many sites, maintenance receives positive reviews. "The bathrooms were clean and lit. Grounds were clean and convenient," notes a camper at Belle Fourche Campground, while another camper at Tatanka Campground mentions, "Spaces have cement picnic tables and fire pits" and "bathrooms throughout."

    What you should know

Non-resident fees: Wyoming state parks charge significantly higher fees for out-of-state visitors. "Wyoming state parks seem to be hostile to non residents. It's cheaper to stay at a regular rv park and you have better amenities," reports Mike C. at Tatanka Campground, detailing costs: "Online reservation fee $8. Fee for electric site $18. Electric fee additional $10. Non resident fee $12. Plus tax."

Limited amenities in Moorcroft: When staying at Wyoming RV Park in Moorcroft itself, expect basic facilities. Harold describes it as a "Quiet & small park" with "About 10 sites with Class A, B, & C RVs. Full hookups and we were charged $40 for cash price. No toilet or shower house at the present."

Water activities: Swimming is permitted in most areas at Keyhole Reservoir except boat docking zones, but pet owners should exercise caution. "You can swim anywhere in the reservoir except where boats dock. If you have pets though I would be cautious around the water, there are tons of signs up about algae blooms," advises a Homestead Campground visitor.

    Tips for camping with families

Wildlife viewing: Multiple campgrounds offer wildlife observation opportunities. "We had just fallen asleep then woken by the sounds of a large bear roaring very close to us," writes a Belle Fourche camper who later discovered it was actually "A MAN SNORING!?!" More reliably, another visitor notes, "Open field, with prairie dogs, and I saw a Buffalo in the woods grazing."

Hiking access: Reuter Campground provides convenient trail access for family hikes. "A nice hiking trail has a couple options. There is a parking area at the trailhead or just leave from camp. I love that they have a trail map at the check in sign," writes Art S.

Budget-friendly options: For families watching costs, Belle Fourche Campground offers good value. "10$ per night. This is a pretty neat spot if you're looking for camping without plugging into anything," reports Sabrina V., noting additional free amenities like "free fire wood; first come first serve; cheap and easy - no cash or check."

    Tips from RVers

Quick overnight stops: Several campgrounds serve well for one-night stays when traveling through the area. At All Seasons RV Park, about 35 miles south of Moorcroft, "This campground was a good spot to land for an overnight stay. The RV site we had was mostly level on a rock pad with FHU in full sun," reports Clint G.

Propane and supplies: RVers should fill propane tanks before arriving at most campgrounds, as on-site filling stations are limited. "It's a 6 hour drive from Denver, but I'll probably head up to Keyhole whenever Colorado has strict fire bans. Pretty neat spot, reservation only at the moment," notes a camper who found the area worth the drive despite limited services.

Site leveling: Many RV sites in the region require leveling equipment. One visitor to Tatanka Campground notes, "Our site was not very level, but we were able to manage," while another mentions, "Most rv sites are on a little of a hill but level enough."
