Best Dog-Friendly Camping near Beulah, WY

CAMPER SUMMARY PRESENTED BYFord

Sand Creek Public Access West Oxbow Dispersed Camping provides free primitive camping areas with pet-friendly policies. Located near Beulah, Wyoming, this dispersed camping destination features multiple pull-out areas along the road where campers with dogs can set up. Each site accommodates multiple vehicles, though finding level spots can be challenging for larger rigs. The area includes basic pit toilets at each pull-out, with rock fire rings previously established by other campers. No drinking water, showers, or hookups are available, making this best suited for self-contained camping. Dogs must be kept under control, with a five-night maximum stay limit posted on site. Several campers note the area becomes busy during summer months with tube rafters enjoying Sand Creek.

The dispersed camping location offers good access to Sand Creek for pets who enjoy swimming and cooling off. Dogs can explore the shoreline while their owners fish the creek, which contains plenty of catchable fish. Wildlife viewing opportunities include prairie dogs in the surrounding area. The camping areas provide enough space for dogs to move around, though not designated as off-leash zones. Verizon cell service remains strong throughout the area, allowing campers to research nearby pet services if needed. Summer visitors should be aware of increased activity and traffic from recreational water users. The absence of marked boundaries between campsites means responsible pet owners should be mindful of other campers and their animals while enjoying this natural setting. Plenty of areas allow campers to pull up vans or vehicles for convenient overnight stays.

    Spearfish KOA

    One of the Nicer KOAs

The KOA was very easy to find right off I 90 and US 85. Check-in was quick and easy and we were guided to pull in site 65 with FHUs. The utilities are smartly placed in the middle of the pad. Our pad was plenty long enough for our 39 fifth wheel and F450 truck. The staff was super nice and helpful and the campground(CG) was well-maintained. We used their laundry room with 6 washers and 6 dryers for$2 a wash and$2 to dry. A bonus was that the dryers actually dried the clothes in 30 minutes. We were right across from their small fenced dog park. We were also close to the 7.5-mile nature trail entrance from the park to the river, which was great for walking our dogs. The CG has curbside trash pick-up plus firewood& ice for sale. The WiFi was above average for a park this size. We got two bars on Verizon. There are trees in the CG, but not enough to prevent you from getting a satellite shot into the sky. Guests with dogs here do not pick up after their dogs in the dog park and especially along the back side of the CG where we were staying. We saw dog poops all over the place and witnessed several times out our back window, and in the dog park, people not picking up after their dogs. The CG doesn't seem to enforce picking up after your pet. There is a lot to see and do in the area. As we were here in October, the leaves were changing in Spearfish Canyon and we enjoyed a really nice leaf peeper drive, and then visited Deadwood, which was having its Octoberfest.

    Chris' Campground

quiet place, but a few fyi's

They advertise that they have Wi-Fi but it's almost like they shut it off at 10 o'clock at night when quiet time starts which is a great time for looking up directions or places to see, we could never connect for long and streaming- which means no Netflix its against the rules(which we never saw only overheard). They allow fires but make sure you get a metal ring because it's illegal to have a fire in south Dakota if you don't have one they have them but they don't leave them at the sites or let you know they are available. Also no petting zoo we specifically came here thinking they had one because they advertised and after we arrived they informed us it was turned into a dog park i have no pictures but there's not much to see here

    Spearfish KOA

    Very nice campground

Nice people, very clean bathrooms, close to highway so there’s some road noise. Nature trail with off leash dog area, and a small dog park in the middle for off leash doggy play time.

    Spearfish KOA

    Great campground

Nice campground with grass and trees, full hookups. Pleasant and helpful staff, one of the cleanest bathrooms I've seen. It has amenities, dog park, nature trail, ice cream social nightly. Calm and relaxing.

    Rocky Point Recreation Area

    Awesome!

Really like the layout of this CG, it’s spacious and scenic. There are toilets but we used our trailer, so I can’t report on them. The reservoir is pretty (was really low when we went) and close to all of the sites. There is a playground and a dog park.

    Devils Tower KOA

    The view

KIA’s are the glamping of camping. That’s why we stay at them every once in awhile. The dog park wasn’t great and the WiFi speed wasn’t anything to brag about. The bathrooms were clean and they offered evening activities. This stay really sold us on the view. It’s beautiful!

    Wild Bill's Campground

    Hidden gem near Deadwood

This little camp is not mentioned in the Deadwood promotional booklet and that's just fine with us! It was not crowded, but busy. Nestled between 2 streams and the tall pines of the Black Hills, we stayed 3 nights with our 3 dogs. It has everything you need, though the 50 amp sites are back-in, not pull thru. The bar and grill is popular with local ATVers and serves great hamburgers and a good selection of craft beers.

They also sell wood for campfires at a reasonable cost.

Our dogs loved the long walks around the campground, crossing over the creeks on the little bridges. There is an off leash dog park 10 minutes away in Lead, SD. Not ADA compliant, built on a steep hill with no paved walkway or stairs or hand rails, but the dogs loved it.

The wifi is iffy and the cell phone service is spotty at best, so bring DVDs to watch when you are not out enjoying the sites and activities.

15 minutes from Deadwood and Lead, 1 hour from Mt Rushmore and Crazy Horse Memorial (a must see!).

Elkhorn Ridge RV Resort & Cabins

    A True Resort

We wanted to spend a couple of days in the Black Hills and also needed full hookups and laundry after about a week of boondocking - Elk Horn Ridge gave us that and more. Easy access off I-90 and super close to Spearfish, Deadwood, Lead and all this area of South Dakota has to offer. The campground is a true resort with concrete pad sites with modern full hookup connections, beautifully landscaped grounds overlooking the Frawley Ranch, and a wonderful pool, a pool-side bar, dog park, basketball and pickleball courts, coffee bar and laundry. Our rig was a dirty mess from the boondocking and Elk Horn Ridge even has local mobile companies that come to your site and clean your rig. Ours was cleaned while we hiked the Spearfish Canyon!Loved our time here and special kudos to Ellee and Jordan for their welcome at check in and drinks after dinner!

    Pactola Reservoir Campground

    So nice!

This was the second time we camped at Pactola Reservoir and it was great. They are very dog friendly ($2/pet, per night and you have to pay in cash at check-in), which is awesome to find. We have two dogs but saw other campers with 3. The upper loop (I think sites 48+) looked like they are more for group camping in that the sites are very close together but the rest of the campground has spacious sites. We stayed at site 37 in a tent and while it was a little close to the bathrooms and trash, it didn't bother us as much as we thought because the site is huge. The camp store is also well-stocked and came in handy. Overall, we would definitely choose to come back!

What to do

Hiking trails at Devils Tower: From camping areas near Beulah, Devils Tower National Monument offers accessible trails. "We did get up early and drove 1 hour and 45 minutes to the Badlands for sunrise. Spectacular! We did Mt Rushmore and Crazy Horse monument another day and a third day hiking and checking out the local waterfalls," notes a camper at Spearfish City Campground.

Mountain biking: The Black Hills offer extensive trail networks. "Great bike paths, disc golf, walk up Spearfish Canyon or hop your bike and go down the canyon and have brunch at Latchstring Restaurant," recommends a visitor staying at Spearfish City Campground.

Trout fishing: The mountain streams around Beulah provide good fishing spots. "The camp sites are very close together (no privacy) but people were quiet and respectful. There is a lovely creek you can sit by and enjoy," reports a camper. Local creeks contain catchable fish, particularly trout in the cooler mountain waters.

What campers like

Creek access for cooling off: The cold mountain water provides relief on hot summer days. At Sand Creek Public Access West Oxbow Dispersed Camping, "There are three pull outs along the road where you can camp. There is a pit toilet at each and several places where others have made fire rings out of rocks. The sand creek has plenty of fish to try your luck at."

Wildlife viewing: The area supports diverse wildlife. At Reuter Campground, "We were noticing all the campgrounds around seemed to NOT have trees. We are tent camping, so shade is of utmost importance. Reuter did not let us down! Surrounded by big pines and aspen trees, it was a diamond in the rough for sure."

Proximity to attractions: Pet friendly camping near Beulah provides convenient access to regional highlights. At Spearfish KOA, one camper noted, "The area is beautiful and there is a creek that runs around edges and the fish hatchery to tour across the street. Sites are very close and there were lots of unattended barking dogs in the morning and evenings."

What you should know

Limited level sites: The terrain around Beulah can make level parking difficult. At Chris' Campground, "They assisted in parking the camper which was helpful since the quarters are quite close in this campground. The owners are very helpful and friendly."

Weather variability: Mountain weather can change rapidly. "We originally were going to stay in the Badlands national park but the weather turned cold so we decided to switch since fires are not allowed in the National park," explained a visitor to Spearfish City Campground.

Summer crowds: Peak season brings increased traffic. One camper at Chris' Campground shares, "Just wrapped up our 3rd stay in 4 years here. Love it!! Plenty of shade in most of the sites. They do an excellent job of maintaining the facilities and provide everything needed for an excellent stay."

Tips for camping with families

Creek exploration for children: Kids enjoy wading and exploring the water edges. At Timon Campground, "I got a site right on the creek (#7) which the dog adored. Only a few other campers. Very peaceful."

Fire safety planning: Fire restrictions can vary seasonally. "They allow fires but make sure you get a metal ring because it's illegal to have a fire in south Dakota if you don't have one they have them but they don't leave them at the sites or let you know they are available," warns a visitor to Chris' Campground.

Pet supervision requirements: Dogs need proper supervision in campgrounds. "The camp sites are very close together but it was not anywhere near full when we were there so we had plenty of space. Paved roads were great for kids to ride their bikes," notes a camper at Spearfish City Campground, which also welcomes pets.

Tips from RVers

Limited hookups at dispersed sites: Come prepared for self-contained camping at dispersed locations. At Hartman Rock Dispersed Site, "Single lane forest road with a pull-off camp. Will fit maybe, 2 medium rigs."

Road condition alerts: Some forest roads require careful navigation. "Great wild camping spot that's big enough for 30ft Travel trailer. Site is fairly level and has a nice fire ring. Road is good coming to the spot," notes a visitor to Hartman Rock Dispersed Site.

Dump station locations: Plan waste management accordingly. "We didn't even use the dumpstation as the way it is positioned I couldn't get the tanks dumped, so that was a bummer. We went into Spearfish campground owned by the city and dumped there," advises an RVer from Iron Creek Lake Campground.
