This campground has electric but not water hook up. There is a dumping station at the exit. There are no fire pits, bring your own. Great wooded hiking trails. There is the Tir Angels playground, sand volleyball, frisbee golf, and a semi pro baseball field all located with in the grounds! So much to do, so little time!
Only thing missing is pool or lake. However River Falls has a community pool a couple miles away and great kayaking on the Kinni with 2-1 outfitters in town as well.
This is a state park on the Wisconsin side of the St Croix River, which is mirrored by a comparable but smaller state park in Minnesota on the wrst side of the river, both being part of the wild and scenic St Croix National Waterway. Although the campsites themselves are pretty run of the mill, the setting is spectacular in terms of breathtaking scenery, and myriad outdoor activities from rock climbing in the river gorge, paddling the river, hiking miles of trails, and learning geology at the Ice Age geology visitors center. If you are tenting camping, the south loop is great, and if you pick campsite 65 or 67 you will have direct access to the river which is peaceful and good for paddle opportunities. There are picnic areas with swimming along the river which is nice for group gatherings, and one is designated for folks with pets. Some of the rugged hiking trails along the bluffs and cliffs go right along the edge with minimal guard rails or walls, so keep a close eye on kids and pets because going over the edge is a possibility so utmost caution is advised.
Willow River State Park no longer has a beach or a lake, but they are working on the dam to refill the lake once again. Willow River falls is definitely a beautiful site to see. Definitely a place to camp if you like to be active and explore the trails. Winter, summer or fall!
Small little campground next to large casino. We lucked out and were able to stay 2 nights without reservations….only had to move because they were fully booked for the 4th…large concert event happening across the street. You will need to call early in the day to talk to office staff…who are very friendly. If after hours and there are no spots, you can dry dock in large lot in front of office. There is fuel on site as well as RV wash station. Bath house and laundry and card controlled ($5 card deposit on check in)…well maintained facilities. Dog park available, watch a few spots in fence near bottom where fencing has risen up…little dogs could easily climb under. Very convenient for visiting Minneapolis…25/30 minutes from airport/Mall of America (Aquarium) and Security patrols regularly and there is shuttle if you want to visit casino. Pool at hotel is not included. Golf attraction is being completed next door so there was some construction traffic during day as expected.
We were here for a night to see a concert at the amphitheater and everyone was super friendly. It was easy to check in, and we were able to do laundry and shower which was great. It’s mostly gravel but they have some tent sites on the grass. They are dog friendly and have some grassy areas to walk your pets which was great.
Staying here currently & they have been very accommodating, friendly & flexible. Water & electric hookup but no sewer however there is a dump station, a bathhouse with real toilets & nice showers. Pretty quiet for being so close to the main highway. My cats are able to free roam the property & my dog can be tied up outside. Usually pretty nice neighbors too.
Sites are close to each other, but easy access, clean grounds and facilities, friendly staff, and a K9 fenced area for a pet friendly campground.
We called for an RV site but they don't allow pets.
Frontenac State Park sits approximately 75 miles east of River Falls, along the upper Mississippi River where it widens to form Lake Pepin. The park's distinctive terrain features 430-foot bluffs rising above the water, creating unique camping microclimates. Winter camping offers particular challenges as temperatures can drop below zero between November and March, with campsites on exposed ridges experiencing significant wind.
Paddling opportunities: Willow River State Park Campground allows swimming in specific areas of the river. "We did SO many miles hiking! And at certain points in the river, you are able to get in and swim! We love camping here!" reports Sarah L. The park's waterfalls create scenic paddle destinations.
Disc golf courses: Hoffman City Park offers disc golf as part of its recreation options. "There is the Tir Angels playground, sand volleyball, frisbee golf, and a semi pro baseball field all located with in the grounds! So much to do, so little time!" notes Mary H., highlighting the diverse activities available within the park boundaries.
Birding trails: Frontenac State Park Campground is known for its bird watching opportunities. "Frontenac is a quiet campground right outside of Redwing. Great hiking trails but very steep along the river. Can also take part in birding walks," writes Tegan C. The bluff environment attracts diverse bird species throughout the year.
Privacy between sites: Highland Ridge offers well-separated campsites. "This campground is small, but almost all sites are large. There are 38 sites plus walk in tent sites A through G and a group site," notes Mary S. The wooded setting provides natural screening between many campsites.
Cart-in camping options: Afton State Park offers dedicated cart-in sites for those seeking more seclusion. "The hike to the campground is short and grueling. A few of the sites are in wooded areas, but we stayed in one of the prairie sites. The terrain is just hilly enough - and in August - the grass long enough to give the sites a sense of privacy and seclusion," writes Andrew C. about his experience at the park.
Clean facilities: William O'Brien State Park Campground maintains well-kept bathroom facilities. "The shower house needed a cleaning as well. There is no adjusting the shower temperature. Push the button and you get what you get," mentions Tim, highlighting that while clean, some facilities have operational limitations.
Water access variations: Apple River Family Campground offers waterfront sites with direct river access. "We had a river front site (63) and the river sites are AMAZING! The tubing is obviously fun and this campground has tree cover unlike anything I've ever seen!" shares Mariah F., though noting that noise can be an issue on weekends.
Road noise considerations: Some sites at Lebanon Hills Regional Park experience traffic sounds. "The only criticisms we have are that you can hear road noise — and depending on your site you'll hear the alarm of one of the access gates for the Minnesota Zoo," reports Blair, despite the park's suburban location.
Seasonal campground closures: Several pet-friendly campgrounds near River Falls operate on limited schedules. Highland Ridge runs from April 1 to November 30, while Apple River Family Campground operates from May 15 to October 1, limiting off-season pet camping options.
Playground proximity: Choose sites near play areas for convenience with children. "This campground has electric but not water hook up. There is a dumping station at the exit. There are no fire pits, bring your own. Great wooded hiking trails. There is the Tir Angels playground, sand volleyball, frisbee golf, and a semi pro baseball field all located with in the grounds!" notes Mary H. about Hoffman City Park.
Swimming options: Afton State Park provides designated swimming areas. "Less than an hour drive from Minneapolis this is a good get away. As expected it has many walk trails. Highlight of this location is beach which is nice for swim and sun bath. But beach isn't motor vehicle accessible so expect 5-10 min walk," explains Alison, noting the walking requirement to reach water.
Educational programs: Several parks offer ranger-led activities for children. "There is an interpretive center for Saturday evening ranger programs and a playground next to it," mentions Mary S. about Highland Ridge, highlighting educational opportunities available during summer months.
Site leveling requirements: Highland Ridge requires preparation for uneven terrain. "Many sites are placed on an incline. They got the sites are pretty flat, but it's still on a hill," explains John W., suggesting bringing extra leveling blocks when camping with RVs.
Electric hookup locations: Not all sites offer the same amenities. "Some electric sites ($31) in the first 2 loops; the map has an 'e' next to the site number and so does the post at the site," notes Mary S. about Frontenac State Park, emphasizing the importance of checking site details when reserving.
Site access challenges: Some campgrounds have difficult approaches for larger rigs. "The road to get to our water view site (69) was narrow and tricky with the camper but it was worth it for that peaceful view!" reports Amber C. about her experience at Apple River Family Campground, suggesting smaller RVs may navigate more easily.
