The Elroy area sits in Wisconsin's unique driftless region, characterized by steep ridges, deep valleys and sandstone formations that weren't flattened by glaciers during the last ice age. Elevations range from 900-1,300 feet above sea level, creating distinct microclimates that affect camping conditions throughout the year. Seasonal temperature variations are significant, with summer highs averaging 80°F and winter lows often below 10°F.
What to do
Kayaking the Kickapoo River: Access points near Wildcat Mountain State Park provide entry to what locals call the "crookedest river in the world." A camper notes, "Great location for kayaking and hiking. Ontario to bridge 5 was 2.5 hours."
Biking historic rail trails: The Elroy-Sparta Trail features three railroad tunnels carved through limestone hills. "The Elroy Sparta Bike Trail, North America's first rails-to-trails project, runs through the Tunnel Trail Campground. The campground is very nice, especially for tents and smaller campers and caters to bicyclists."
Hiking to scenic overlooks: Several trails lead to panoramic views across the driftless landscape. "Hiking trails were pretty close and we had quite the exercise going up/down the mountain. We drove a truck so getting up/down the mountain wasn't a problem, but if you have a low car, the front end is going to get scraped at the bottom of the mountain."
Exploring prehistoric petroglyphs: Ancient rock carvings can be viewed at Roche A Cri State Park Campground. "The 303 stairs to the top lookout is a workout and worth the trip for the view. We hiked almost 5.5 miles through this beautiful state park."
What campers like
Peace and quiet: Sites at Wildcat Mountain State Park provide separation from neighboring campers. "The sites were spaced apart far enough so you weren't on top of the other campers. Very beautiful scenery, especially from the lookout."
Water recreation options: Many campgrounds feature swimming areas with varying amenities. At Mirror Lake State Park, "The lake is great for kayaking. Lots of sandstone cliffs. We only did 2 hiking trails but they were well maintained."
Spacious lakeside sites: Waterfront camping with direct lake access is available. "We had site A11, and just loved the location. The A loop is overlooking the lake and close to the beach. Big pine trees so your campsite is really flexible. We had 3 sites A10-12 and just made it a big area for the families to merge in."
Family-friendly activities: Scheduled events keep kids entertained at Yogi Bear Camp-Resort. "It was Halloween theme weekend so there was trick or treating, a haunted house, dance party... They pile people onto a trailer turned wagon and drive around the park and yell 'HEEEEEYYYYYYYYY' to every person they see!"
What you should know
Highway noise: Some parks experience road noise that may affect sleep quality. "Adams County is rather flat and sound carries. You will hear cars on the highway at night in the distance. The sky is amazing with no light pollution."
Limited cell service: Coverage is spotty throughout the region, particularly in valley campgrounds. Plan communications accordingly.
Train schedules: Several campgrounds are near active rail lines. "The night train schedule was 22:45, 03:10 and 03:15. There are plenty of washrooms. Fire wood is sold at the camp ground entrance. $5 a bundle, cash or check."
Seasonal closures: Many glamping accommodations near Elroy, Wisconsin operate May through October. "We stayed here over Memorial weekend, we had a nice site with grass and trees. They had a parade of first responders, firefighters, EMTs come through the campground on Saturday."
Tips for camping with families
Coin-operated showers: Budget accordingly for paid facilities. "The showers take quarters, but they are hot, have good pressure, and a quarter gets you a lot of shower time. Our kids bring their bikes and have a nice time on the quiet and slow paths."
Wildlife encounters: Keep food secure to prevent unwanted visitors. "The raccoons were brutal. They broke into our crates twice. Smart enough to figure out the clip mechanism."
Water activity options: Castle Rock County Park offers swimming beaches with platforms. "There's a big beach area roped off, and a swim platform for the big kids. There's a boat launch, and Buckhorn State park is just 15 min away if you need more trails."
Budget-friendly alternatives: For glamping near Elroy with kids, consider state parks with upgraded amenities over private resorts. "This is a smaller campground but makes up for it with all the access around it. Ice Cave trail was a neat, quick walk. The trails around have gorgeous views of the driftless area and Kickapoo river."
Tips from RVers
Extension cords required: Many electrical hookups are positioned awkwardly. "Make sure you bring 50 ft of electrical cord and water hose. They do offer to barrow their extension cords."
Site leveling challenges: Terrain varies significantly between campgrounds and even within loops. "Sites are situated with the terrain which can make them interesting to get into. They're gravel and mostly level. Good wifi which is purchased separately."
Size restrictions: Arrowhead RV Campground has limitations for larger vehicles. "We had difficulty getting to our site as tight corners for rigs 38 feet or more."
Seasonal road conditions: Spring thaw can create challenges on unpaved access roads, particularly at elevated glamping sites around Elroy. "We needed up driving past the wash and rode to the largest tunnel."
