    Neshonoc Lakeside

Great value as a TT member

This campground came to us through Thousand Trails Collection.  At first we only had a W/E site and later was able to move to a full hook up site.  All sites has a gravel pad with a grass yard, fire ring, and picnic table.  The fire rings are sunk completely into the ground for some reason.  The lots were spacious and the property offered a large pool, hot tub, restrooms, showers, laundry room, fishing and canoeing.  This is a pet friendly park.

Cliffwood Campground — Mirror Lake State Park

    Big woodsy sites

We have a big private site #138 it’s in the Cliffwood loop at the end where the circle is. We had electric, picnic table, (you have to fill your camper with water after you enter there’s many hoses) we had a fire pit and a private trail behind the campsite that leads to a view of the lake. It has been so quiet in this loop it’s hard to believe it’s opening week due to COVID.

The lake is nice and cold lots of kayaking and canoeing. You can launch at the boat ramp.

There is a swim beach, nice pet area and trails in the park to hike.

There are 3 loops for camping we like the one we’re in. Cliffwood loop Big sites near us ours 138, 137 big but soggy when it rains hard, 136 is nice it has a view of the lake. 139 is ok the back drops down a hill where you park for day use.

Sandstone ridge loop some nice big sites are 74, 75, 77.

Bluewater bay loop has no electric smaller sites we saw all tents in this loop.

Some sites are not level so come prepared.

We ate at Ishnala supper club it’s very pricy yet excellent food. The building is cool with some original parts from the old log cabin it once was. The service is great beautiful view of the lake from a window seat. Several bars and a little gift shop.

Good food in Baraboo at the little village cafe. The chocolate torte is so good. The owners are so nice.

    We would stay here again.

    Buckhorn State Park Campground

    Beautiful site, heavy mosquito activity

We camped on site 22. It was an easy walk from the parking lot to the site with the help of the provided carts. It was peaceful and lovely! It seemed like a good spot for kayaks and canoes given the lake access; it appeared shallow and sandy at this site. The porta-potty was clean and located in the parking lot. There was a basic fire ring with grill grate and a picnic table. Fish were jumping frequently. We were able to set up our screen house and tent with plenty of room to spare. The only reason I gave this 4/5 stars is because the mosquitoes!!! I know, it's nature in all it's glory but we couldn't leave our tents until sun went down so it was a bummer. We will revisit earlier in the spring in hopes of avoiding the bugs.

    Buckhorn State Park Campground

Beautiful sunrises over the lake camping

This was my first time camping next to a lake and we loved listening to the water falling asleep and waking up in the morning. The sunrise was absolutely gorgeous. The main swimming area of the beach had a nice sandy bottom and clear water. We stayed at backpack site 21. I was a little apprehensive doing a backpack site pregnant and with a toddler but there was a wagon shared between 3 campsites available at the parking area to carry your gear to your site. There was a nice picnic table and a couple benches as well as a fire pit with a moveable grill top. There was also a porta potty shared for sites #20-22. Our campsite was fairly secluded. It was also quite a hike from the heart of state park so we ended up driving to trailheads and to the playground and beach. The first night we were there the flies were horrific and biting at dusk and it was miserable being outside. Just going into our tent quickly caused at least 30-50 flies to sneak in. The second night was windy and we had no flies. After reading some reviews the flies can occasionally be a nuisance in mid to late summer. We were there end of July. We would absolutely camp here again, the sunrises were breathtaking. I think next time we will try for the other side of the lake.

    Wisconsin Riverside Resort

    Camping with all the amenities

We came here to enjoy some river tubing! Free shuttle takes you up river for a 3 hour float trip. We reserved one campsite for 2 couples. There was a picnic table, fire pit and electric hookup onsite. Port o potties and spigot nearby and a dumpster for trash. They have non electric camp sites along with RV sites and cabins with everything you could need including kitchen and tv. Seems like a lot of people stay there for the long haul as there are some trailer homes with heavy decoration.

The general store has everything you would need available for purchase and there's a large bar/restaurant attached. We were there the same day of a wedding reception. Free mini golf and swimming pool for campers. Bugs were a bit of an issue but thats expected. The river is clean with a shallow sandy bottom which attracts many parties and fun times. Not exactly the place for a quiet getaway.

    Skillet Creek Campground

    Family Friendly Campground

We wanted to see Devil's Lake State Park however were unable to get a campsite at the park. Called Wheeler's and they had availability. The campground was well maintained and a few minutes from Devil's Lake. Bathrooms were very clean and showers were free. Nice playground for the kids and a small fishing pond. Owners were very friendly and accommodating to our family. Large sites with fire pit and picnic table.

The area sits at approximately 1,200 feet elevation with summer temperatures averaging 75-85°F during peak camping months. Winter cabin rentals remain available at several campgrounds when temperatures drop to the 20-30°F range from December through February.

What to do

Biking rail trails: The Elroy-Sparta trail runs directly through Tunnel Trail Campground, letting campers access three historic tunnels. "The Elroy Sparta Bike Trail, North America's first rails-to-trails project, runs through the Tunnel Trail Campground. The campground is very nice, especially for tents and smaller campers and caters to bicyclists," notes one visitor.

Kayaking and fishing: Mirror Lake State Park offers calm waters for paddling with sandstone cliff views. "The lake is nice and cold lots of kayaking and canoeing. You can launch at the boat ramp," reports a camper. Another adds, "The lake is great for kayaking. Lots of sandstone cliffs."

Geocaching adventures: Buckhorn State Park provides GPS units for geocaching adventures. "When we arrived and checked in we grabbed one of their pre-loaded GPS units for Geocaching; It's something the park offers for free. They give you a bag, GPS and information book on all the Geocaching sites," explains one visitor who brought their nieces.

What campers like

Private lakefront access: At Buckhorn State Park Campground, walk-in sites provide direct lake access. "We got one of the spots that you needed to hike out to but it wasn't far at all. There were 2 other campsites beside us but they weren't reserved so we were all by ourselves. We had a little slice of beach and it was very beautiful during sunset," describes one camper.

Family-friendly amenities: Wisconsin Dells KOA offers facilities particularly suited for children. A visitor reports, "We stayed at KOA in Wisconsin dells, which was about a mile away from everything. They have a kids playground, and a heated pool with some little attractions attached for the kids. Bathrooms showers were CLEAN!! they also provided movie night on a project underneath a pavilion."

Cabin comfort: The cabins near Elroy at Oakdale KOA provide convenient accommodations with varying levels of amenities. "We upgraded with a patio site that included a nice round patio table with 4 padded chairs, a gas grill, and 2 Adirondack chairs. Very nice for a quick night's stay when you don't want to take everything out," notes one guest.

What you should know

Highway noise considerations: Several campgrounds in the area experience highway noise. At Mirror Lake, "You can definitely hear traffic at almost all times," and another camper advises, "You are so so close to the freeway. I wasn't aware of the freeway noise during the day, but once I went to bed it was all I could hear—so bring better earplugs than I did!"

Bathroom facilities vary: Cabin and campground bathroom access varies widely. Chapparal Campground receives high marks for cleanliness: "This ultra clean campground has amazing shower and bathroom facilities. The owners are kind and respectful, the grounds are very well-kept and bathrooms are cleaned multiple times a day."

Seasonal insect challenges: Summer brings mosquitoes, particularly at Buckhorn State Park. "I may be biased—because I really hate mosquitos and ticks but wow! The ticks here are so tiny they're very easy to miss so look out for those. Also the mosquitos never let up—even in the rain," warns one reviewer.

Tips for camping with families

Water recreation options: Multiple options exist for water activities with children. "The ultra clean campground has a small swimming pool that is clean and not too deep, as well as a giant beach and swimming hole. Campers may use the beach for free, but the inflatables that are on the water cost extra," reports a Chapparal visitor.

Playground access: Arrowhead RV Campground offers extensive recreation options. "Great campground for families with kids and teens. Tons of activities all around the campground. There were outdoor movies, put-put, corn hole, two pools, huge trampoline, volleyball nets, disc golf, and a Christmas in July festival all happening when we were there," shares one family.

Cabin selection for families: When booking cabin accommodations near Elroy with children, consider proximity to bathrooms. A Wisconsin Dells KOA visitor explains, "Our site was level and had everything we needed (fire ring, picnic table, electric), and was across the road from a wonderful bathhouse/restroom. The facilities were very clean, and we appreciated that the showers each had separate entrance doors."

Tips from RVers

Extension cord requirements: At Arrowhead RV Campground, electrical hookups may require additional equipment. "Camping spots are situated with the terrain which can make them interesting to get into. They're gravel and mostly level. Make sure you bring 50 ft of electrical cord and water hose. They do offer to barrow their extension cords," advises one RVer.

Water fill locations: For those with cabin or RV accommodations, note water access points. A Mirror Lake camper explains, "We had electric, picnic table, (you have to fill your camper with water after you enter there's many hoses)." This applies to many campgrounds in the area without full hookups.

Dump station access: When staying in camper cabins or RVs, Tunnel Trail Camp Ground provides sanitary dump facilities. Their cabin rentals allow easy access while maintaining camping atmosphere. "Water and electric hookup on each site! Amazing events every weekend!" notes a regular visitor.
