    Misty Mountain Camp Resort

    Mom and son new adventure

Misty Mountain Camp Resort is located in Crozet, Virginia, off of 250 below Afton Mountain. I'm familiar with this resort. Many, many years ago, when it was Yogi Bear's park, a lot of updates since then. Great accommodations. I've not enjoyed camping as much as I have these last 2 weeks with my son Matthew, who is 30 years old down syndrome, autism and a leukemia survivor. I am 66 years old. I'm on the best adventure of my life. Just bought a new motorhome after my partner of 15 years passed away. I'm on a new journey. And taking care of my life with good health. I recommend this park to anyone. Friendly staff, accommodating, pet friendly dog parks, bathhouse, laundry, sun, and shade, with 30 and 50 amp hookups with sewage. I couldn't ask for a better place. Have a fun-loving life, I am!

    Cloverdale Farms

    Camping at Cloverdale

We’ve got a little 20 acre hobby farm. This historic property has gently rolling hills, with a little creek amidst a couple acres of cleared, open, secluded woodland perfect for pitching a tent and listening to nature. Fields in the back lend a great view for star gazing and looking up at the Milky Way. If the peace and quiet isn’t enough for you, there are pet goats, cats, a dog, and chickens that all love attention. Guests are more than welcome to help in the garden, pick flowers, and enjoy fresh produce and eggs while they’re here. Located 5 minutes from the James River, guests can hop over to the boat landing for fishing, swimming and boating or check out Blanton and Pleasants, a community staple. If you’re a hiker, there’s a state forest and state park just a short 15 minute drive west.

Madison Vines RV Resort & Cottages

Newly renovated, great staff, many amenities, some sites are noisy

Stayed here for two weeks in early March. Newly renovated campground with a lot of amenities. Very helpful staff. The campground is a lot of money upgrading services, capabilities, and extra activities (St Patrick's Day parade and dinner). While we were there they added street signage (very helpful) and installed a Bocce Ball field. Two fenced dog parks. Campsites are level gravel (no pads). Located near multiple vineyards. Our only complaint was that the sewage connection was slightly higher than the black tank outlet on our Airstream. The majority of camp sites are very close together, and the sites closer to the highway experience highway noise.

Walnut Hills Campground & RV Park

    Will definitely return!

    Pros outweighed the cons.

Good: Staff was amazing! Trash pickup daily. Level sites. Nice little general store. 9-hole disc golf course. Dog park and playground centrally located. Quiet. Close to shopping, restaurants, etc.

Bad (if they can be called “bad”): We were excited about cable and wi-fi as a new perk. Could not get cable to work and wi-fi was spotty at our site. Had great signal in other parts of the campground though, and cell reception was strong. Roads were narrow to navigate and some sites quite short in length.

Walnut Hills Campground & RV Park

    Scenic clean campground

Enjoyed our stay at this campground! Office is open until 8pm which is rare. Sites are clean and flat. Pull thru and back in slots available. There is a lovely creek running through portions of the campground. Showers and bathrooms were relatively clean. Didn't use the pool. Dog park and playground were nice features. Overall, good value for the sites and amenities.

Walnut Hills Campground & RV Park

    Very nice clean rv park

Located within minutes of I81. We stopped for 2 nights to see the Shenandoah National Park on our way to NC. Called last minute and got a site. Very nice customer service. Grounds were very well kept. Our site 112 had water, 50amp and cable. Dump station on premises. Nice dog park for our fur babies and doggie duty stations with bags in several locations throughout the park. Also had a cute playground for kiddos. Didn't use the pool so can't comment. A little highway noise but when windows and door were closed couldn't hear a thing. We'd stay here again. They honor Good Sam discount. Paid $38 with discount.

    Charlottesville KOA

    Nice Campground, Close to Attractions

We really like the location of this campground as we wanted to explore the VA wine country, Monticello, Skyline Drive and other sites in the area. Overall, we liked the park which had nice campsites, was very clean and well-kept, and we liked our campsite which was level and had full hook-up.

Our campsite was a back-in which was in a quiet corner of the campground. The site was long enough for our 45’ motorhome and tow car. The site was perfectly level, gravel, and had nice grass on the patio which our dog enjoyed. All the utilities were well-placed, so you didn’t need additional hoses. The cable hook-up provided us with plenty of television channels and the wifi worked well (albeit we just used it to check email and did not stream anything). Some campsites are pull-thrus (if you don’t wat to unhitch or back up) but it seemed this section was busier with transient campers coming and going and the sites seemed a little tighter. Some back-in sites have a wooded area behind them and more shade than our relatively open site. There are tent sites situated under trees for shade and to add a little privacy. Tent areas have a picnic table and fire pit along with a wooden bench and high table you could use for food prep. The campground does not allow hammocks so make sure you have a tent and were not planning on sleeping in your hammock.

As you would expect with a KOA, there are lots of amenities and many that are geared towards kids (although we didn’t see too many during our stay). There are two really nice playground with slides, swings, climbing walls, game room, swimming pool, bouncy pillow, etc. There is a small little basketball area with one hoop and a paved surface which is adequate for shooting hoops but not playing a full-court game. The dog park was surprisingly big and we were impressed at the size which was big enough to throw a ball for our lab. Other nice amenities were the fishing pond and a½ mile nature trail in the campground.

Lynchburg / Blue Ridge Parkway KOA

    Quiet retreat

This was our first visit to this campground and it was farther than we usually travel for a long weekend but we’ll worth it. It’s small with about 40 RV sites in addition to tent sites (4) and cabins (8). The camp hosts were very nice. Fire wood is delivered when you purchase it. Trash is picked up from your site. The layout is weird but most sites are pull through. We were in B24 with friends and family staying in B25 and B26. These were back in sites and very spacious. While not necessarily secluded, they felt more private. The bath house was central to the sites and were unisex individual bathrooms. Not modern but clean. The ere is a pool and an area near the office with lots of childrens activities; playground, shuffleboard, basketball, gem mine, horseshoes, jump pad, and a fishing lake with large fish. The pool is near the offices as well. The office has a small store area with some souvenirs and necessities. There is a large dog park. Get dessert at Woodruffs just down the road, check out Natty Bs for lunch and some general store items and fresh baked goods on the way to Natural Bridge which is dog friendly! Dogs allowed in visitor center and the Natural Bridge itself. There’s a new brewery just across the street. Lynchburg is about 25 min drive and has a Community Market that is part farm market and part local crafts market. Free parking in that area on weekends. Drive the Blue Ridge Parkway north for some awesome overlooks as you climb the mountain and approach rt 60. Skip JJs Meat Shack in Buena Vista if you go through there.

Loft Mountain Campground — Shenandoah National Park

    Convenient, laid-back camping

    Great experience here.

We went hammock camping here at Loft Mountain on a Friday night and packed up Saturday morning. We had to pay to get into Shenandoah, and then pay the camping fee for loft mountain.

We arrived around noon and with the hopes of getting a good first-come, first serve site. All of the reserved sites were booked through July. We had no problem finding open spots when we arrived... the ranger actually highlighted all of the available spots for us on a campground map (probs about 15-20 available). She told us site 35 and 44 were great for hammocking (they were 'meh' for hammocking) and we chose site 44 because it was more private and further from the main road. The downside was that the table was pretty rotted out. I believe 33 was another good tent site.

Some sites are very close to the road and some you have to walk deeper in so if it's your first time camping or you're not looking for anything intense, this campground will def have something for you.

Quite a few pets but it was all pretty peaceful. We heard a lot of noises at night and a large doe come up to our site early (2 am??) in the morning and it freaked our dog out... pretty sure she woke up the entire campground with her barking lol but other than that we slept well and didn't see any bears or anything like that.

Things I really loved: bear boxes at each site, the amphitheater (perfect for sunsets), easy access to trails, the souvenir shops, how peaceful it was, water-bottle filling station.

Recommended close hike: Doyles Run Falls hike where you see 2 waterfalls. It is pet friendly, takes about 2-3hrs depending on how long you stay at the falls, and is all downhill getting there and all uphill coming back.

Hope this helps someone plan for their trip!

Guide to Scottsville

The James River provides the centerpiece for pet friendly camping near Scottsville, Virginia, with elevations ranging from 300-1500 feet throughout the surrounding areas. Summer temperatures regularly reach 90°F with high humidity, while spring and fall offer milder conditions in the 60-75°F range. Winter camping requires preparation for occasional freezing temperatures, though many campgrounds remain accessible year-round.

What to do

Explore Appalachian Trail access points: Devil's Backbone Camp offers hiking enthusiasts direct shuttle service to the AT. "Walking distance to devils backbone brewery. Clean bathrooms. Close distance to hiking trails and other breweries and cideries. Close to humpback rock, spy rock, crabtreefalls and many more trails to explore," notes camper Chyna K. The campground connects to numerous day hikes suitable for various skill levels.

Take advantage of dark sky viewing: Red Oak Campground at James River State Park holds International Dark Sky Park designation. "The park is part of the Dark Sky Parks Association and if you are into astronomy and stars this is the place to stay. They have miles of trails, a playground, marshland, and it is right on the James River with multiple river access points," writes Bridget H. Minimal light pollution creates exceptional stargazing conditions year-round.

Try riverside fishing: The James River watershed supports diverse fishing opportunities directly from campsites. "Camping along the river at the Canoe Landing Campground is great in the slower seasons. The sites are pretty close together so I'm sure it would be much more cramped when it's busy but it's a beautiful place. And you can fish right off the bank less than 50 yards from your tent," reports Christina from Canoe Landing Group Campsite.

What campers like

Convenient brewery access: Devil's Backbone Camp provides unique camping with craft beverage options. "5 minute trail walk to the Devil's Backbone brewery. You can have several great beers with your meal and safely walk back to the camp site," writes Robert M. This eliminates driving concerns after enjoying local craft beverages.

Clean, well-maintained facilities: Misty Mountain Camp Resort consistently receives praise for hygiene standards. "The bath house was very clean and very well thought out. Electric sites have 20a, 30a, and 50a hookups so small trailers can use a normal extension cord," notes Mike G. Many campers mention this differentiator when comparing regional camping options.

Waterfront camping options: Direct river access enhances the camping experience at several locations. "Horseshoe Flats has been the location for my neighborhood car camping/kayak trip for the last several years, and it is a fantastic location. Big enough to accommodate a bunch of tents and a couple RV's, and right on the river, which makes paddling or tubing a breeze," says Rob U. at Horseshoe Flats Campground.

What you should know

Seasonal impacts on camping experience: Summer heat and humidity affects comfort levels significantly. "Cumberland County is only at 455' elevation, so the heat and humidity in the summer is intense—we were very uncomfortable our first night because of this, so fall would probably be the best time to go as it is when central Virginia has the best weather," advises Stephanie J. at Bear Creek Lake State Park.

Reservation challenges: Some smaller campgrounds fill quickly or have limited booking systems. "Just went to book a site since I'm in the area, and it's a two-night minimum to tent camp. This seems crazy for a Sunday night and the campground is not at all packed. It's also $50/night, which is too high for primitive sites," notes RL about Warren Ferry Landing. Check minimum stay requirements and book well ahead during peak seasons.

Variable site privacy: Site selection significantly impacts experience. "Site 50 is a bit strange. Camping area is big enough for a small rig but the power pedestal is far away, so you might have to be creative in setting up. Unless you have a long power cord or don't hook up at all," writes Mara S. about Misty Mountain Camp Resort. Research specific site layouts before booking.

Tips for camping with families

Find campgrounds with planned activities: Misty Mountain Camp Resort offers structured family programming. "Very laid back atmosphere, plenty for the kids to do! Kept them occupied the whole trip! Enjoyed the music and smores offered by the campground, site was close to level and felt we had plenty of room around us!" reports Christopher T. These organized activities provide entertainment without additional planning.

Consider water safety near campsites: Waterfront sites require extra vigilance with children. "The water view loop was not heavily trafficked, though the water does provide a hazard if you have small children as it is not roped off in any way. Our kids loved having the water right there and we loved watching them, it just requires extra vigilance," explains Stephanie J. about Bear Creek Lake State Park.

Look for dedicated swimming areas: Designated swim zones provide safer water recreation for families. "There is a great swimming area with a little kids area that was so fun! We did a hike around the whole lake, lots of great views," shares Katie M. Many campgrounds separate swimming from fishing and boating areas.

Tips from RVers

Check hookup placement before arrival: Devil's Backbone Camp has unusual utility arrangements. "Some of the pads (#9 in our case) had a septic cap that was too high. We didn't have those things to raise the hose up, so I had to manually lift and empty the hose for the duration of our emptying. Also, the power station was on the opposite side of the septic, so make sure you have a 30ft power cord at least!" advises Robert M.

Consider cell service needs: Mobile connectivity varies significantly between campgrounds. "Verizon service is spotty 1 to 2 bars and unreliable data but with a directional cell booster we are able to get enough signal for our Verizon Jetpack to work," notes Micah B. at Red Oak Campground. Plan accordingly if remote work requirements exist.

Research site dimensions carefully: Charlottesville KOA offers varying RV site configurations. "Our campsite was a back-in which was in a quiet corner of the campground. The site was long enough for our 45' motorhome and tow car. The site was perfectly level, gravel, and had nice grass on the patio which our dog enjoyed," shares Nancy W. Verify your specific rig will fit your reserved site.
