Reaching Spy Rock means earning it. The most direct route starts at the Fish Hatchery in Montebello and covers roughly 1.5 miles of steep trail to the summit, while a longer approach connects from Crabtree Falls for those wanting more mileage. The trailhead can be hard to locate on a first visit, and one access route passes briefly through private property, so checking current trail status before heading out is worth the effort. Cell service is reportedly absent on the lower trail but returns once you reach the top.
The camp area sits just below the summit in a clearing with flat, soft ground and established fire pits. It holds a modest number of tents comfortably, though reviewers note it can fill up on weekends. From the rocky summit above, sightlines open toward the Shenandoah Valley in nearly every direction, and both sunrise and sunset are worth the early alarm or late evening scramble. One note worth flagging: at least one recent visitor found signage suggesting camping may no longer be officially permitted, though the site remains in active use.
Rob U. calls it "one of my favorites," and given the lack of fees and the summit access, the appeal is straightforward. Everything comes in on your back. There are no water sources, no toilets, and no services of any kind. Campers who want a base with amenities can look into Montebello Resort nearby, or browse camping near George Washington National Forest for a wider range of options across the region.
