River Oaks camping areas sit at approximately 650 feet elevation in North Central Texas, where summer temperatures regularly exceed 100°F from June through August. The region features mixed terrain with lakeside camping options primarily clustered around Benbrook Lake and Eagle Mountain Lake, both Corps of Engineers impoundments that provide flood control and recreation opportunities.
What to do
Fishing opportunities: Eagle Mountain Lake offers abundant fishing near Hideaway 23 Lakefront RV & Cabins. "We had the pleasure to stay there for a weekend escape, and it exceeded all my expectations. The location right on Eagle Mountain Lake was breathtaking," notes Thomas F.
Wildlife viewing: Multiple deer herds populate the camping areas around Benbrook Lake. At Holiday Park Campground, "There were dozens of deer out of all sizes. I came across 5 different groups of them as I was driving around taking in the entire campground," reports James S., who adds, "where there are deer there are ticks. Make sure to use insect repellent and give yourself a check."
Biking opportunities: Many campgrounds feature paved roads suitable for casual cycling. "Bicyclists seem to love it here as I saw dozens riding the streets," mentions one Holiday Park camper. The terrain is mostly flat with gentle hills, making it accessible for riders of all skill levels.
What campers like
Spacious sites: Many campgrounds near River Oaks feature sites with ample room. At Cedar Hill State Park Campground, campers appreciate the layout. "The park is designed with small loops for 15-20 camp sites in each loop. Very little traffic right by the individual spots," notes Michael C.
Lakefront views: Loyd Park offers sites with direct water access. "We stayed in site 115, great spot close to the water. Sites are spaced far apart, all come with fire ring and covered picnic table," shares Tammie L. Another camper notes, "Our site was only a hundred feet from the lake - gorgeous view!"
Tree coverage: Despite the Texas heat, many campgrounds offer shaded sites. "Lots of sites have lots of shade," mentions one Holiday Park camper. At Treetops RV Resort, "The trees are beautiful and add great shade. Most of spaces are pull through and very easy to setup at," according to Jessica F.
What you should know
Summer heat precautions: From June through September, temperatures frequently reach triple digits. Prioritize water access or shaded sites. One Holiday Park reviewer warned, "We were in site #05... This site had little to no shade, ac had to work very hard. Would not recommend this site in summer time."
Lake level fluctuations: Benbrook Lake camping areas may experience closures during flood seasons. "Trails may close temporarily during flooding seasons," notes one camper. During drought periods, some boat ramps may become unusable as water levels drop.
Reservation requirements: Most dog friendly campgrounds near River Oaks require advance reservations, especially during weekends and summer months. North Texas Jellystone fills quickly during peak times. "This is literally the best campground for families. There are tons of activities, games, crafts, pools, petting zoo, water park, and more," states Lauren Z.
Tips for camping with families
Water recreation access: Loyd Park provides beach access for families. "They have a big beach, park area to enjoy. Staff is friendly," mentions TJ & Laura S. The swimming area has gradual entry points suitable for younger children.
Dedicated family activities: North Texas Jellystone offers structured children's programming. "We love this Jellystone! We are full time travelers with young kids and they love this RV park. There are sooo many fun activities," reports Kimberly D., who adds, "the cost can add up."
Playground options: Dallas/Arlington KOA Holiday offers basic play equipment. "This is a KOA 'Holiday' but the playground had only a swingset. They need to add more for the kids," notes Rob N. For more extensive play areas, Cedar Hill State Park provides multiple playground sites throughout the campground.
Tips from RVers
Pull-through availability: Treetops RV Resort offers convenient pull-through sites for larger rigs. "Most of spaces are pull through and very easy to setup at," shares Jessica F. The campground can accommodate large motorhomes and fifth wheels with ample space.
Low-clearance warnings: Watch for tree branches at several campgrounds. At Holiday Park, "The registration card says to watch for branches if your RV is over 12' tall, but there were several branches much lower than that leaving site 73. We were able to navigate to avoid most of them, but one was unavoidable," warns Ray & Terri F.
Water access considerations: Some pet friendly campgrounds near River Oaks have inconsistent water hookups. "We proceeded to the dump station just inside the gate to find out there was not a potable water spigot just the usual rinse hose," reports MickandKarla W. at Holiday Park, who adds, "Not sure what we would have done if this had been a busy weekend with all of the water sites full."
