Cattle grazing up to your campsite by morning is one of the more distinctive features of Forest Road 904 in Lyndon B. Johnson National Grassland, where free dispersed camping spreads across hard-packed gravel roads in north-central Texas. The access road runs off FM 730 via CR 2461, a stretch reviewers note is paved but quite narrow. Once through the gate on FR 904, the road opens into a corridor of well-spaced sites, many with established fire rings and a few pull-through options suited to larger rigs.
Roughly 22 identified sites line the road, spaced far enough apart that neighboring campers rarely feel close. Weekends draw more visitors, but by Sunday the area tends to quiet down considerably. Griffin K. notes it's "very quiet you won't hear anyone besides the wildlife at night," and that holds up across multiple reviews. Deer, armadillos, hogs, and birds are regularly spotted, and the grazing cattle roam freely through the area.
Cell coverage runs on AT&T at roughly one to three bars of LTE, enough for basic use but inconsistent enough that downloading offline maps before arrival is worth the effort. No bathrooms or water are available on FR 904 itself. A pond sits about a mile away, usable for camp showers or fire suppression but not for drinking. Tadra Point and Black Creek Lake NF Campground both have water on-site, though it's non-potable, so packing in drinking water remains the reliable approach. A water dispensary is available in Decatur, about 30 minutes away.
Campers with larger rigs should scope sites before committing. Turning around is only practical in a few spots along FR 904, so unhooking a tow vehicle at the gate first is a practical move. Some sites have accumulated debris left by previous visitors, so pack-in, pack-out discipline matters here. Hikers can find trail maps through third-party apps. This is a no-frills, self-sufficient setup that rewards those who come prepared.
