Best RV Parks & Resorts near Philip, SD

RV parks near Philip include Minute Man RV Park & Lodging with electric hookups, water, sewer, dump station and pull-through sites accommodating big rigs. The Badlands Hotel & Campground in Interior offers 80 full hookup sites with 50-amp service, picnic tables, and fire rings open May through September. Both campgrounds provide easy access to Badlands National Park. American Inn & RV Park in Murdo features water, sewer, electric, and boat access with sites available May through November. Most RV sites throughout the region are pull-through on level gravel pads with varying degrees of spacing between neighbors. "The sites are level, although a bit close to each other. There is some shade which was welcome," notes one camper about the Badlands campground.

Throughout the region, dump stations are readily available at most developed RV parks, though 24 Express RV Campground in Wasta offers a more basic setup with electricity but no water hookups at sites. Cell service varies by carrier, with Verizon providing reliable LTE coverage at most locations. Summer temperatures can reach above 100°F, making electricity for air conditioning essential during peak season. Several campgrounds charge between $20-40 per night, with the basic electric-only sites at 24 Express offering the most economical option at $20. A camper mentioned that at Badlands Interior Campground, "Electric only sites. Not really sites as much as semi wide spots in road. Most of the loops are backwards so that your awning would hang over road." Pets are generally allowed at all RV parks in the area, though specific restrictions may apply.

    Badlands Hotel & Campground

    Perfect proximity

Perfect location for visiting Badlands National Park. Jussstttt outside the park entrance and the Ben Reifel visitor center. Could not ask for a better location. The campground is a no frills, perfectly adequate base for exploring the area. 30 amp (some sites have 50) and water with a dump station. The staff is super friendly and there is a small store and cafe. Each site has a picnic table and fire ring. Sites are gravel and pretty level. Can’t beat it for $38/night! We had a spot at cedar pass for one night and extended here because it wasn’t worth moving (see pic of how close they are to one another) and CP doesn’t have water hookups.

The views are spectacular from the campground. Great spot for sunrises, sunsets and stargazing.

Cedar Pass Campground — Badlands National Park

View and Location Make this a Gem

We stayed at the Cedar Pass Campground in Badlands National Park the first weekend in March 2016. The weather was unseasonably warm, and the tourists were few. Most of this campground is closed during the "off-season", so we pulled our RV into a pull-through (really, a shoulder) site in the group camp area. During our stay there was only one other person camping, and he camped with a tent. There are pit toilets there, and this time of year they were fairly clean and well-maintained. The sites in the group area are spread apart well. Each area has a covered picnic table. There are no fire pits or grills here, as the fire danger remains high most of the year. Plan to bring a gas or charcoal grill of your own for cooking if you don't use an RV. On occasion we were able to pick up the Wi-Fi from the Cedar Pass Lodge, which is located nearby, but don't plan on campsite internet. This is a rustic campground. That said, water is available at the entrance, as well as a dump station, In addition, electric hook-ups and flush toilets are available in the summer season. This is one of only two campgrounds in this national park. and the other, Sage Creek Campground, is on the far west end of the park, remote, and very rustic (and also FREE). This campground is located within walking distance of the Ben Reifel Visitor Center. Reservations open in March for the summer season, and we recommend making them, as this campground is almost always full in season. Or, visit like we did, in the off-season, which can be much more temperate for weather.

Cedar Pass Campground — Badlands National Park

    Cedar Pass Campground, SD

Located within Badlands National Park, this campground couldn’t be more conveniently located to nearby hiking trails and all the Badlands has to offer. There is a visitors center with a small store in walking distance. Our site was essentially along a road, so privacy is limited, but you get your own awning and picnic table. The bathrooms weren’t heated and it was about 5 degrees which made our showers uncomfortable. The showers require quarters, but there is a no change machine. Use the vending machine to make change instead.

Tent camping is allowed all year, but most guests were staying in RV’s.

    Sleepy Hollow Campground

    Right in Wall Drug

Awesome pull through full hookup sites. Small shop in office. Laundry and showers. Clean bathrooms. Friendly staff. Two minute walk to Wall Drug which also hosts a grocery store, gas station and Ace Hardware. Fenced in dog park was a major bonus.

    Badlands Hotel & Campground

Much better than the nearby national park campground

We stayed at the Badlands Interior Campground and Motel for three nights while visiting Badlands National Park.  We were supposed to stay in the national park campground, but they had overbooked and we were out of luck, as were most other campers with reservations that day.  Fortunately, the Badlands Interior campground is just two miles down the road from the national park campground. They offer full hookups for the same price as a lessor site at the park campground.

We found the Badlands Interior Campground to be enjoyable and convenient. We were in our class C while slowly making our way across the country. The campground is reasonably large. We had no problems getting a spot here. Sites are gravel for the RV, very level, and reasonably well maintained. All RV sites are pull through. Hookups are in good condition. You may have to run your water hose under your RV.  Each site has a grassy area with a table and fire pit. The grassy areas were a little narrow, causing your neighbor to be a little close.  Staff was very friendly and helpful. There are tent sites available.

There was a pool that we observed being used daily. There is a meadow with hiking trails at the campground. There are showers, laundry and a campground store.  Breakfast is also available.

The campground is conveniently located just two miles from the national park. It has great views of the national park. There is almost no noise other than your neighbors.

We had 4 bar LTE with Verizon. Our hotspot performed very well. The wifi offered at the campground is the best we have encountered.  My wife was able to play her xbox games in the evening.

We found this to be a great place to stay.  We will stay again when traveling this way.

    Badlands Hotel & Campground

Nice place on way to YNP August 2023

This park is clean, and just outside of Badlands National Park.  The pool was great per our Grand-kids.  Liked swimming and seeing Badlands at the same time.

The only problem the sites are short, but big rigs still parked here and intrude onto the road a bit.  I had to back out of my pull through site as the rig across from me had his motorcycle parked in front and was partially on the road. But I don't blame the park for this but the camper.

    Badlands / White River KOA

You'll be treated with a smile and have all your answers given!

This campground is busy because of its location to the Badlands National Park...so expect people. They offer a lot here...Full hookups with water and cable tv. They do have wifi but with so many people you probably should not count on it. They have cooks who will make you food and it is good. The people who checked us in were great and very helpful with everything!

Guide to Philip

Camping sites around Philip, South Dakota provide access to the unique terrain of western South Dakota where the mixed-grass prairie meets the eroded Badlands formations. Summer temperatures commonly exceed 90°F with occasional storms bringing high winds across the exposed camping areas. Winter camping options are limited with most facilities closing between October and May.

What to do

Stargazing at night: The dark skies at Cedar Pass Campground offer exceptional stargazing opportunities, with regular ranger programs. "Every evening there is program prepared by the rangers as well as a presentation of the stars," notes one visitor.

Museum visits nearby: Just 8 miles from Wasta at 24 Express RV Campground, you can explore a military museum with affordable admission. A camper mentions, "There is also a military museum on-site with super cheap admission."

Morning hiking: Plan early day hikes to avoid extreme heat in summer months. "Plan to hike in the mornings. The hills around the park are simply amazing. The sunrise and sunsets are inspiring," advises a camper from Cedar Pass Campground.

What campers like

Affordability of dispersed camping: Free camping is available at The Wall Boondocking Dispersed just outside Badlands National Park, with designated camping spots along the road. "This is a maintained boondocking area a few miles outside of the Badlands National Park entrance off of rt.240 with designated camp spots," explains a camper.

Clean facilities: Sleepy Hollow Campground maintains exceptionally clean shower facilities. "The bathroom/shower was indeed super clean like everyone says!" confirms one reviewer who stayed for two nights while visiting Badlands.

Nature trails: Some campgrounds offer their own hiking opportunities. At Badlands Hotel & Campground, campers appreciate the nature trail. "They have a cute little nature trail that they mow maintain," mentions a tent camper.

What you should know

Wind conditions: Strong winds are common at many Philip area campgrounds, especially at dispersed sites. A camper at Buffalo Gap Dispersed Camping warns, "The wind was alittle bit or a struggle but we have everything tied down and all our windows are open."

Limited shade: Most camping areas have minimal tree coverage. "Spots are VERY close together. Pull through sites are off set so neither of us can use our awnings," notes a camper about spacing at Minute Man RV Park.

Seasonal water access: Some campgrounds transition between dry and wet operations depending on season. A Cedar Pass visitor shared, "We were here in April and they were in the middle of transiting from dry to wet, as far as running water. The sign said no water, but there was water!"

Road conditions: Access roads to dispersed camping can be rough but generally passable. "Currently, as of June 10th 2025, the road is accessible by almost any vehicle except a lowrider or sports car," reports a camper at The Wall Boondocking Dispersed.

Tips for camping with families

Pool amenities: Badlands / White River KOA offers family-friendly features including a pool and recreational activities. "The playground and mini golf was very outdated," notes a visitor, suggesting families should check current conditions.

Timing for tent sites: During peak season, arrive early to secure tent spots at popular campgrounds. "We came in Early August, so it was a bit more crowded per the famous Sturgis motorcycle festival," reports a camper at Buffalo Gap.

Morning wildlife viewing: Schedule early morning outings to maximize wildlife sightings. "We woke up early and drove in to see sunrise," shares a camper who stayed at Badlands Hotel & Campground.

Weather preparation: Pack clothing for variable conditions even in summer. At Buffalo Gap Dispersed Camping, a visitor advises, "Make sure to use stakes for your tent though because the wind is wild."

Tips from RVers

Electrical needs: During summer heat, prioritize sites with electrical hookups. "Hookups were great in 107 heat!" confirms a visitor to Minute Man RV Park & Lodging during extreme temperatures.

Affordable dump stations: Several rv parks near Philip, South Dakota offer economical dump services. At 24 Express RV Campground, "$5 to fill with 100 gallons plus dumping and flushing tanks! Just leave the money in the drop box and you're good to go."

Site orientation challenges: Cedar Pass Campground has an unusual layout for RVs. "Most of the loops are backwards so that your awning would hang over road," explains an RVer.

Limited privacy: RV sites throughout the Philip area typically offer minimal separation between neighbors. A visitor to American Inn & RV Park notes, "The spots are close, but level and nice."
