Split Rock Park offers multiple pet-friendly campsites with electric hookups along the Big Sioux River. Pets are allowed throughout the campground area with proper leash control. Clean picnic tables and fire rings are provided at most sites, with tent sites situated in a separate loop from RV spots. The trails along the river are accessible for dog walks, though several reviews note the proximity to railroad tracks with frequent train noise, particularly at night. The well-maintained grounds feature vault toilets rather than shower facilities.

City of Dell Rapids Campground near Rickman Field welcomes pets at both tent and RV sites with electric hookups, sewer connections, and water access. Dogs must remain leashed throughout the camping areas. The campground provides a convenient location for pet owners wanting to explore the bike route along the river. Train traffic and nearby quarry operations can create significant noise disturbances for camping pets sensitive to sounds. River Park Campground and Palisades State Park also accommodate pets with various hookup options in the Dell Rapids vicinity, with Palisades featuring more extensive hiking trails through quartzite formations where dogs can be exercised on leash. The beautiful rock scenery and water access points provide good opportunities for pets that enjoy outdoor exploration.

      Sioux Falls KOA

      Awesome pet-friendly stopover

We decided to stay at this campground because it was close to Falls Park. It’s 4 miles away from the KOA to Downtown. It wasn’t crowded, very clean, met lots of Texans and the pet areas were awesome! In fact, Sioux Falls is a very dog-friendly city and was able to take my dog everywhere! The showers were great if you don’t want to use your own in your camper, but they have laundry and such if you need it. We were close to the showers, pet area and laundry house. Yea, it’s next to a Camping World but you know what, it was a great stay with nice folks and the road noise really isn’t a problem, especially if you just go in your camper and watch tv because you shouldn’t be there for that. 🙃 They just opened for the season so they are still adding some things but I would recommend! We were grateful to stay and not travel during 50mph winds.

      Blue Mounds State Park Campground

      Small State Park in Farmland

We stayed here for one night on the way to the Black Hills in South Dakota. The campground is in the far south western corner of Minnesota about 30 minutes for Sioux Falls South Dakota. The site is in the middle of grasslands and cornfields. They have very organized park staff that have an efficient check in process. The campground has some nice ponds and bike routes. It’s located next to a bison range and tours are available. Unfortunately the camp sites are packed in on top of each other with no privacy. You have a lot of local large RV users using loud generators and playing music until after midnight. They have good facilities with showers and dump stations. During our stay, the water in the camp tested positive for bacteria and the camp was giving out free drinking water. Since you don’t have many options in the area, this may be a good choice. The overcrowding was our main issue.

      W.H. Lyon Fairground

Convenient to downtown and fine for the night

We stayed here one night and got to experience some South Dakota wind rocking our camper during the night. The bathrooms are huge and very clean but someone left dirty diapers in trash and by morning the smell was rough. Area along fence borders highway with  much closer sites and road noise. We opted for area on grass near arena.

Big Sioux Recreation Area — Big Sioux

      Clean and Dog Friendly

Such a nice campground. Nice big shady trees and manicured lawns. They sell campfire wood for 6$ a bundle on site so we had some great campfires going. They have nice long paved trails for walking and biking. We got to walk our dogs on it to avoid tick contact from the grassy trails. There was a cool suspension bridge that was fun to walk on. The showers were very nice and hot without a lot of traffic.

There is no sewage hookup or water hook ups. They do that 50/30 amp sites available. There is a dump station right at the entrance to dump when you leave and it also has a separate fresh water station if you want to fill up right when you get there so youre not traveling with a bunch of water in your tank.

It was a great campground and the falls were close by and palisades state park was also in the area with a nice hike.

There is an extra $8 car fee per night that you have to pay on top of any camping fees. If you are staying longer than 5 days it better to just get the annual parking pass for $32, which would cover parking for all state parks and recreation areas in SD.

They have great discounts if you are a veteran and south dakota resident.

      Dakota Sunsets RV Park

      Beautiful + quiet

This is just off the highway, but you wouldn’t know it when you’re in the rig. Super quiet and the owners were so sweet. They spaced us out with a beautiful pull through and plenty of room. They also gave us treats for the pups and cookies for us. Nice little thoughtful dog park with water and toys. Sunflowers right there for you to enjoy. The flies were definitely out, so had to manage getting in and out of the rig quickly as a few got in.

      We’d definitely stay again.

      Lake Vermillion Recreation Area

      Beautiful campground

We stopped here on our way through south Dakota headed back to Colorado. The staff were really friendly when we pulled in. Got us checked in right away, gave us directions to our site and sent us off. Thry also sell firewood for $5 a bundle. We are in tent site 4. There are only 4 strictly dedicated tent sites. you park across the street and walk a very short distance, maybe 200 feet to the site. The bathroom is in the parking lot along with a water source. The lake is on the other side of the parking lot. There is also a dumpster there in the parking lot.

The camp site is extremely spacious. plenty of room for tents if you have more then one. It's nice and mowed out with the bordering area still long providing an edge to the site. The four sites are clustered fairly close but the way it's landscaped, you won't see your neighbornuntil you step out to the path to your car. They all have fire rings with a grate to cook on. The picnic table has a nice shade canopy over top. The bathroom surprised me a little. most pit toilets are dark at night but this one has a light! it also has a trash can and hand sanitizer! it smells decent and it's very clean. it will quickly become BYTP but we are only here the one night so hopefully it won't run out. The lake is gorgous! it's a huge long lake and seems to be a favorite boat spot. water skis were abundant, which also meant it got pretty loud with boats buzzing, people partying and music blaring. this is why it lost a star. it was pretty loud up until probably 9 pm. The mosquitos are bad, bring bug spray!

      Sioux Falls Yogi Bear

      Great for passing through

Clean bathrooms and showers and close to Falls Park. Tons of amenities for families with kids. Close to the interstate. Great for a one night stay on the way to bigger and better sights. Stayed with a dog and was glad to see the other campers had their pets leashed at all times.

    Guide to Dell Rapids

Camping options near Dell Rapids, South Dakota center around the Big Sioux River watershed at approximately 1,480 feet elevation. The area features distinctive quartzite formations created over 1.7 billion years ago, creating unique terrain for outdoor recreation. Summer temperatures typically range from 65-85°F while winters drop to 5-25°F with occasional snowfall.

    What to do

Hiking quartzite formations: At Palisades State Park Campground, trails navigate pink quartzite cliffs rising up to 50 feet above Split Rock Creek. "I love this park for both it's camping and hiking. Stunning quartzite formations make for some great climbing. It's a really small park which is both good and bad. The trails aren't very long, but it's not usually overcrowded," notes Jessica B.

Water activities: Lake Vermillion Recreation Area offers fishing, boating, and swimming options with a sandy beach area. "Very nice campground with big sites. This area is very nice for hiking and pretty sure swimming and kayaking. We were there early spring so water was to cold to swim," writes Clarke N.

Kayaking: River access points allow paddlers to explore local waterways. "We rented kayaks and went up river, then floated to our camp site. Half way we ran out of beer - AND THEY BROUGHT US SOME!!! Love, love, love this place!" shares Laura R. about River of the Double Bend Campground.

Disc golf: Several parks in the region maintain disc golf courses as an alternative outdoor activity. Big Sioux Recreation Area offers an established course among its amenities.

    What campers like

Privacy between sites: Split Rock Park provides spacious camping areas with natural buffers. "This is a pretty little campground next to a river. Tent sites have a loop in the back and rv sites are along the road. This campground is never full so if you need a spot for a night, this would be a good one to check. Lots of green grass and a nice playground," reports Stacy R.

Clean facilities: Big Sioux Recreation Area maintains well-kept grounds and amenities. "Clean bathrooms with showers. Pathway is well lit without being obnoxious. Seems to be mostly electric sites. There's a dump and water fill with small clean dumpsters throughout. The hosts were super nice to talk to. Sites are clean and manicured and pretty level," according to Jennifer K.

Family amenities: Sioux Falls KOA provides entertainment options for children. "Our stay here was perfect! We don't usually stay at campgrounds Bc we prefer dispersed camping but this was great. We requested a specific site and they were very accommodating. So friendly. Impressed with the camp store. Everything clean and well maintained. We got a spot right in front of the playground which was perfect for our toddler," explains Laura C.

Wildlife viewing: Multiple campgrounds offer opportunities to observe local fauna. "Spring was coming alive with gobbling turkeys and cackling pheasants; we even got a show from a strutting tom turkey. Overall, a quiet and scenic stay with great wildlife viewing and lake views," says MickandKarla W. about Lake Vermillion Recreation Area.

    What you should know

Train noise: Several campgrounds experience railway disturbances. "Beautiful spot. Easy water access. Only hitch is you're very close to train tracks and the trains tend to be quite loud as they pass," warns Ryan W. about Split Rock Park.

Non-resident fees: South Dakota parks charge additional fees for out-of-state visitors. "South Dakota charges a day use fee ($6) plus a fee for tent camping ($17); I opted to pay for an Annual Pass of $30 since I plan on doing more SD camping this year," advises May M. about Lake Vermillion.

Water quality: Some parks have water restrictions or issues. "The only downside is that their water is contaminated. They provide directions to a city site where you can fill your camper tank, and they give out a gallon of drinking/cooking water when you check in," notes Kristen B. about Blue Mounds State Park.

Cell service: Coverage varies significantly between campgrounds. "King also offers free Wi-Fi with a download speed of 22 Mbps, while Queen has no T-Mobile service. However, King provides 15 Mbps of service," reports Tim R. about Palisades State Park.

    Tips for camping with families

Playground access: Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park offers extensive kids' activities. "Our family spent a long weekend here enjoying all of the activities they had to offer. Everything from laser tag to chocolate milk chugging contests. The sites were extremely well maintained. Saturday night was the yogi bear parade and it was the highlight of our entire stay," shares Alec S.

Swimming options: Several parks feature swimming areas for summer recreation. Lake Vermillion Recreation Area includes "a very nice sand beach, playgrounds, fishing, star gazing, and four campgrounds," according to John D.

Safety considerations: Some natural features require extra supervision. "We love the tent camping. Large sites. Dog friendly. Trees for the hammock. We have 3 kids 5 and under. They like it too, but there are cliffs and water, so plan accordingly," advises Cody H. about Split Rock Park.

Pet-friendly camping near Dell Rapids, South Dakota: Most campgrounds welcome pets but enforce leash rules. Check pet policies when planning animal-friendly camping trips in the Dell Rapids area.

    Tips from RVers

Electric-only hookups: Many sites provide electricity without full connections. "Site was level. Trees surrounding area. Electric hook up but no water. Flush toilets with showers very nice," reports Carol J. about Big Sioux Recreation Area.

Dump station locations: Note where facilities are positioned. "The fresh water fill spigot is in a large pull-out on the right, past the boat launch and just before the 10 mph sign. The dump station is in the West Campground," details MickandKarla W. about Lake Vermillion.

Size restrictions: Some campgrounds cannot accommodate larger vehicles. "We followed our GPS getting off I-29 at exit 79 in Sioux Falls and going straight west on hwy 42 for about 20 miles to the sign for the right turn to go up to the recreation area... we saw the pull-along sites (49-62), which are small and close to the road accurately described in forums as not big-rig friendly," explains MickandKarla W.

Leveling requirements: Terrain varies between campgrounds. Sites at Big Sioux Recreation Area are "clean and manicured and pretty level," according to Jennifer K.
