The area surrounding Summit Station, Pennsylvania includes a variety of established campgrounds catering to different camping preferences. Several developed facilities operate in the region, including Appalachian Camping Resort in Shartlesville and Mountain Springs Camping Resort, both offering full-service amenities for RVs and tent campers. Within a 30-mile radius, campers can find accommodations ranging from primitive tent sites to fully-equipped RV hookups, cabin rentals, and even glamping options. Many campgrounds in this part of Pennsylvania feature wooded settings with access to recreational activities like fishing ponds, swimming pools, and hiking opportunities.

Most campgrounds in the Summit Station area operate seasonally, typically from April through October, with a few offering year-round access. Developed facilities like Twin Grove RV Resort and Blue Rocks Family Campground provide electric hookups, water, and sewer connections, while several state parks offer more rustic experiences. Road access to most established campgrounds is generally good, with many sites accessible via paved roads near major highways including Interstate 81. Campers should check individual campground policies regarding advance reservations, which are strongly recommended during summer weekends and holidays. According to one visitor at Appalachian Camping Resort, "Easy check-in. Tent site was very spacious and clean. Kids loved fishing in the pond. Restrooms/Bath House very well maintained."

Several campgrounds in the region receive mixed reviews regarding noise levels, particularly those situated near major highways. Proximity to Interstate 78 and other thoroughfares can impact the camping experience at certain locations. Camp A While features a stream running between tent and RV camping areas, but as one camper noted, "Right off the highway with lots of loud trucks and bikes." Family-friendly amenities are common throughout the area's campgrounds, with many offering swimming pools, game rooms, playgrounds, and organized activities. Seasonal campers occupy portions of many private campgrounds, creating established communities. Campground stores and markets are available at most developed sites, providing convenience items and camping supplies, though prices and selection vary considerably. State park campgrounds like Locust Lake offer more natural settings with fewer amenities but typically provide better isolation from highway noise.

      Lazy-K Campground

No idea. Was not allowed in since we couldn't arrive before 4pm.

Choose another campground unless you are certain you can arrive before 4pm. Otherwise, you'll not be allowed in.  Owner is belligerent on this point, and from other comments, belligerent on other issues also.

We strongly recommend the nearby French Creek State Park campground.

      Elizabethtown-Hershey KOA

It's rustic, well maintained and quiet

We've stayed here annually for 7 years and it's one of our favorite campgrounds. There are enough trees and green spaces that it feels like a park despite the number of RVs it accommodates.

The sites are level, large, and well maintained. If you need to contend with a tree blocking your satellite dish the sites are large enough that you can usually just move up or back a bit so that you are not blocked.

The pool is nice and clean. Has water fountains, etc. for kids to play in in addition to a kiddie pool. I do wish it was open a bit later into the evening. The camp store is a bit small but is well stocked with camping items in addition to souvenirs and impulse purchase items.

Since the pandemic what they offer has varied. Sometimes hot food like taco Tuesday, ice cream sundaes, burgers and dogs in their activity center at certain times and days. Sometimes ceramic, arts and crafts, etc.. Sometimes their activity center remains closed during our entire stay.

      100 Mile View Camping

      Gorgeous Views for 100 miles

Thought it was super cool that the owner of the campsite came through to see if anyone needed anything and make sure everything was going okay, I also thought the 5 gallon jug of water was a nice touch. The site was nicely laid out and had a great view of the gorge. Loved that we were back in the trees for a little more privacy. My dogs had a great time as well.

      Thousand Trails Hershey

Nice park but the site not so much

The park is very nice however the site H2 was the site assigned to us. The distance between our Coach and the fence was 7 feet and the bathhouse was blocking the view. I do not recommend this site.

      Riverfront Campground

      OK for an overnight.

More of a rustic trailer park than a campground with some long term residents. Owners were nice. "Bathhouse" has flush toilets but wasn't very clean. We don't fish but if you do this might be a place for you.

      Indian Head Campground

      Good but could be better

A lot of people recommended this campground. We were late to book for Memorial Day weekend and Indian Head had plenty of spots open so we gave it a chance. Upon arriving, they gave us a map to our spot, we drove to the area and it was essentially a big open field with no spots marked, no numbers, no direction to really pull in. We had to ask the owner where our spot was because there was nothing to show where it was in the fielded grass area. I understand they are putting work into the campground to improve it, it seems, but seemed Alittle messy just from the store, entrance and overall upkeep of the campground. Overall, if we had the chance to camp here again, we probably wouldn’t. I would reccomend J&D or Lake Glory that’s in the same area if able to be booked.

    What to do

Hiking the Pinnacle Trail: Access the Appalachian Trail from Blue Rocks Family Campground where trail heads begin inside the campsite. "There are two lakes, Scotts Run Lake and Hopewell Lake that you can fish, kayak, canoe or just relax by," reports Dan N. The park has "a nice flat trail around the lake, which is great for young bikers," according to Katie M.

Boulder field exploration: Experience the unique glacier rock field at Blue Rocks Family Campground. "Our campsite had a great view of the glacier rock field and the corn field," says Jen R. What campers like

Wooded, secluded sites: Locust Lake State Park Campground offers heavily forested camping areas. "Some camp sites are along the lake or along the small creek, all are very wooded," reports Dan N. At Camp A While, "the campground is beautifully laid out with a stream running between the tent and RV camping," says Jen. Jonestown/Hershey KOA offers "some creekside sites along with access to creek from your campite," notes Amber R.
