What to do
Explore local farm attractions: Thousand Trails Gettysburg Farm features a working farm environment perfect for families interested in agricultural experiences. "We were there around Halloween and they had decorated the park so nicely. The sounds of the farm animals all around was fun and amusing for us. It was an easy hike as suggested on the map to circle around and through the cornfield, you get a great view of the farms nearby and the river," notes one visitor.
Visit historical sites: Located within 10 miles of most campgrounds, Gettysburg National Military Park provides self-guided battlefield tours. A camper at Gettysburg Campground mentioned, "We woke up to the lovely aroma of dog feces and cigarette smoke (with the windows closed). This is not a place you vacation at. By far, the worst place we have ever stayed."
Participate in seasonal activities: During October, most campgrounds offer Halloween-themed events and decorations. "We came amidst COVID-19, so the many activities and events this location usually holds are down, BUT there is still fun to be had here! We chose a non-sewage site, the loop is quiet and large and they have the honey wagon 3x a week (free sewage dump service). We've enjoyed mini-golf, feeding the animals, 'hiking' through the cornfield, fishing, and campfires," shared a visitor at Thousand Trails Gettysburg Farm.
What campers like
Creek-side camping spots: Round Top Campground offers sites near water features. "We were looking for a semi-local final fall get-a-way near us. What better location for that than Gettysburg... Our site was clean and wooded. We had friendly couples from out of state on either side of us. Florida and New Hampshire," commented one camper.
Family-oriented amenities: Swimming pools, playgrounds, and organized activities make these campgrounds popular with families. A visitor at Pinch Pond Family Campground noted, "My family recently spent a long weekend at Pinch Pond. Our campsite was very spacious and the ENTIRE campground was extremely clean and tidy. The office and grounds keeping staff were super friendly and helpful. They have Hershey's ice cream in the office and my kids enjoyed getting a treat."
Animal interactions: Several campgrounds feature farm animals that children can feed and observe. "If you love farm animals, that is the spot to be. Got a kick out of the children playing with the kids (baby goats) pigs, goats, chickens, horses and even lamas. Plenty to see and learn. Prefect campground for the family," shared a Thousand Trails Gettysburg Farm guest.
What you should know
Shooting range proximity: Some campgrounds are located near shooting facilities, creating noise during daylight hours. A reviewer at Pinch Pond Family Campground observed, "Nice campground except...there is a shooting range right next door. It is pretty consistent from lunch to dinner. If your out and about, it won't be an issue. However if you enjoy sitting outside of your camper and relaxing this might be nerve wracking."
Limited cell service: Connectivity varies significantly between campgrounds. Thousand Trails PA Dutch Country offers better coverage than more remote locations, with one visitor reporting "Excellent cell and gateway service. Cell is AT&T and our gateway is T-Mobile. Close to Lancaster for necessities and great proximity to Baltimore and Philadelphia for day trips."
Site leveling challenges: Many campgrounds in the region have sloped sites requiring additional blocking. "Unlevel is an understatement we were in E row and every camper there had front end 4 foot off the ground. Many other sites were the same. The walk to pool and all other amenities was not pleasant due to hills," noted a visitor at Thousand Trails PA Dutch Country.
Tips for camping with families
Plan for weather variability: Spring and fall camping requires preparation for temperature swings. A guest at Thousand Trails Circle M advised, "We first had a 2 point site near the river, but when it rains the sites get flooded with runoff from the campground. We moved to a full hookup on the Delaware section. Open, accommodating for our rig."
Take advantage of Halloween events: October brings special activities at most campgrounds, with decorations and trick-or-treating opportunities. "It gets very full on the weekends here. They had Halloween ever at every weekend of October and we spent Halloween weekend here. The kids loved it!!" shared a Circle M visitor.
Look for indoor amenities: For rainy days, seek campgrounds with indoor recreation options. "Laundry is coin or app operated. Putt putt is still open and fun, so is playground. Arcade was open. There is an indoor pool and spa," noted a Thousand Trails Circle M guest.
Tips from RVers
Check water pressure variations: Several campgrounds report low water pressure issues. A recent Thousand Trails PA Dutch Country visitor reported, "Site is gravel and pretty level. Water pressure is pretty low and the sewer pipe is a little high but all around a really solid experience."
Consider sewer hookup placement: Unusual drain configurations can create practical challenges. A Round Top Campground visitor explained, "We went for the w/s/e/c 30 amp site. Everything worked as it should and we got about 15 channels on the cable hookup. Septic dump was about 20 feet away and we had to use a extension to get to it."
Arrive early for site selection: Thousand Trails properties typically operate on a first-come basis. "If you get there early enough around 1 pm, you won't have a problem. This campground is located behind two farms and behind some woods, so you won't be able to see it from the main road. That is great because there was no traffic noise around," advised a camper.
