Dundee sits in the heart of Oregon's Willamette Valley wine country at about 200 feet elevation. The area experiences mild, wet winters and warm, dry summers with average temperatures ranging from 45°F in winter to 82°F in summer. Camping options range from established state parks to private RV resorts, with most sites requiring reservations during peak season from May through September.
What to Do
Hiking trails: Champoeg State Heritage Area offers paved and unpaved paths suitable for all skill levels. "What a find!!! We love it here. The campground is very well laid out and there are plenty of hiking and biking trails right from your campsite. The hosts are super friendly and helpful," writes Thamar D. about Champoeg State Heritage Area Campground.
Wine tasting: Located near multiple vineyards, Dundee Hills Resort serves as an ideal base camp. One camper noted, "It was a solid place to stay, surrounded by vineyards and walking distance to a few wineries and a couple of restaurants." Many tasting rooms offer outdoor seating areas where leashed dogs are welcome.
Disc golf: Several parks in the area feature courses. "The park offers hiking, cycling paths, huge picnic areas and a disc golf course, in addition to boat landings for a canoe along the Willamette River," shares Shari G. about Champoeg State Park. Most courses are free to play and open during daylight hours.
Historical sites: Learn about Oregon's pioneer history. "Old little pioneer town. Has yurts and lots of hiking," mentions Derek B. The Champoeg Heritage site includes period actors and educational displays about the area's significance in Oregon's formation.
What Campers Like
Spacious sites: Many campgrounds offer room to spread out. At Silver Falls State Park Campground, "Site spacing is good with lots of privacy between camps. Bathrooms and showers are super nice and clean. Roads and campsites are paved and level," according to Richard H.
Pet-friendly areas: Most campgrounds welcome dogs, though specific rules vary. "The campgrounds are nice. The hike is amazing and beautiful though most of the trails are closed to dogs," notes Krystle K. about Silver Falls State Park. Always verify pet policies before booking.
Clean facilities: Campers consistently praise maintenance standards. At Sun Outdoors Portland South, one reviewer stated, "Cleanest and most comfortable shower I've had in weeks! The swimming pool is also very nice!" Bathroom facilities typically include flush toilets and hot showers.
Bike-friendly paths: The region features extensive cycling opportunities. "Champoeg State Park is on the Willamette Valley Scenic Bikeway, and a great place to camp if you want to do a long biking getaway," reports Stephanie Z. Many paths connect campgrounds to nearby towns and attractions.
What You Should Know
Seasonal variations: Weather impacts camping conditions year-round. At Willamette Mission State Park Horse Camp, a camper warns, "This park floods every winter. I advise planning your trip for the spring or summer knowing that there is a lot of shaded trails to keep you cool. Mosquitoes can be a problem at dusk because of the water."
Reservation requirements: Most sites book quickly, especially during summer. "I would recommend this place, just make reservations early," advises Ashley B. about Champoeg. Many campgrounds open reservations 6-9 months in advance.
Noise considerations: Some campgrounds experience noise from nearby roads. "The park's proximity to I-5 means that you can still hear the traffic but not so much that it disturbs sleep," notes Shari G. Sites further from major roads provide quieter experiences.
Limited tent options: Many facilities prioritize RVs over tent camping. At Tranquil Orchards and Wine Tours, "This orchard is shady and very relaxing, although near a small airport and highway. There are showers and flushing toilets. The only downside is it's a bit dusty being an orchard, so no grass between the trees," reports Kevin R.
Tips for Camping with Families
Playground access: Several campgrounds offer dedicated play areas. At Champoeg State Heritage Area, "There was a huge playground for the kids. There was also a large field area for dogs to roam around, just no fence," shares Ashley B. These areas provide entertainment when not exploring trails.
Swimming opportunities: Kids appreciate cooling off options. At Jantzen Beach RV Park, "my kiddos absolutely loved the three pools, playground, and basketball hoops. Plenty to check out and explore for them even if this was not your typical 'campground' experience," reports Corinna B.
Educational activities: Some parks offer learning opportunities. "The farmhouse fascinated my boys... they got to water the garden with a water pump and buckets!" says Leslie C. about Champoeg State Heritage Area. Rangers often lead programs during summer months.
Loop selection matters: Some camping areas better suit families. "Loop B is highly our favorite because it is smaller and more private and close to the river. We'll go back year after year. Our kids had a blast!" recommends Scott W. about Champoeg State Park.
Tips from RVers
Site dimensions: Check space requirements when booking. At Sun Outdoors Portland South, "Spaces are long enough for big rigs, as long as you get the 65 foot sites. They have two sizes: 50 foot and 65 foot. I'd recommend the 65 foot sites for a big rig, so you have enough room to park your vehicle," advises Rachel H.
Utility connections: Water pressure varies between parks. At Jantzen Beach RV Park, "Water pressure is the lowest we've ever experienced. Not sure what's going on but all of the folks we've talked to are experiencing the same," reports Jennifer H.
Entrance considerations: Some sites present access challenges. "The entrance to the concrete pads was a little steep and might result in bottoming out. It was not a gentle slope, but a sharp incline," warns Rachel H. about Sun Outdoors Portland South.
Pet-friendly RV spots: Many parks accommodate dogs. At Roamers Rest RV Park, "Clean, quite and well managed. Good for work minded travelers," notes Jerad H. Most RV parks require dogs to remain leashed except in designated areas.
