    Van Buren State Park Campground

    Cozy

Some of the sites are small so you have to be careful which you site you reserve if you’re a tent camper. The outside of the circle is your best bet and there’s a few scattered in the middle. If you can get a good middle spot it’s nice if you have kids since there’s a playground, swings, basketball, and tether court. No running water for bathrooms if that’s important for you. The park is also just off a country road so traffic can occasionally be heard but it’s not excessive. Grounds are very well maintained and the hosts were very nice.

    Alum Creek State Park Campground

Nice park but some traffic noise

Spent three nights here while we were visiting friends in Lewis Center. We stayed in F09 and it was a great spot. Lots of protection on both sides so it was very secluded. And close to the shower house. Only reason I didn’t give this five stars was there was still quite a bit of traffic noise around the park that you could hear. Some nice hiking trails as well. Campsite was nice and level. Showers were super clean and awesome water pressure.

    Mt Gilead State Park Campground

    Small, quiet campground

We like this small campground, it works well for us. Our pad was pretty level and not hard to back into with a small camper. however, a lot of the pads are at 90° angles instead of 45° so it can be harder for a larger camper back in. The full hook up side the sites are really tight together. The electric only sits are spread out a little more. Some have decent shade while others have none at all. Our site was really nice and had space for a tent or you could hang from a hammock. Great camp store, playgrounds, frisbee golf, hiking paths and small lake.

    Indian Lake State Park Campground

    Lots of sites

Our pad was not level front to back so we had to adjust a little bit. The fire ring was nice but our picnic table was beat up. I went to move it and the seat pulled right off. We stayed on a Sunday night so it wasn’t packed. There are a ton of sites. Some had great shade and others didn’t have any at all. The bathrooms were flush toilets and they did have shower houses too. The camp store is really big and it’s right next to their pool. They have a dog park, place to dock your boat and a small beach. I would imagine this would be a pretty busy during the summer.

Guide to Upper Sandusky

Camping spots near Upper Sandusky, Ohio are primarily situated in the glaciated till plains region, with elevations ranging between 880-940 feet above sea level. The area experiences four distinct seasons with summer high temperatures averaging 83°F and winter lows around 18°F. Most campgrounds remain open from early May through October, with several offering extended weekend events throughout the camping season.

What to do

Fishing opportunities: At Arrowhead Lake RV Park & Campground, campers can enjoy two separate ponds - one designated for fishing and another for swimming. "They have two ponds, one for fishing and one for swimming. The swimming one has a dock kids jump off but it only goes to about 3.5-4 feet deep at the deepest point," notes one visitor.

Disc golf courses: Mount Gilead State Park offers an unusual disc golf experience just 45 minutes from Upper Sandusky. A camper described it as "laid out to be a crazy course and included repelling ropes!" This park also features hiking trails and a fishing lake within easy walking distance of the campsites.

Water recreation: Swimming is popular at Walnut Grove Campground where families can cool off during humid summer days. One brief review simply listed the main activities as "Swimming, fishing, playing games," highlighting the water-focused recreation options that complement hiking trails around the property.

What campers like

Spacious sites: Many campers appreciate the roominess at Delaware State Park Campground, where the layout provides more privacy than typical campgrounds. "The 'pod' layout of the campground made for large campsites (some sites are over 90 feet in length and well suited for large RV's) with good separation between sites," mentions one reviewer who enjoyed the park's design.

Clean facilities: Heritage Springs Campground receives consistent praise for maintenance. A traveler noted, "Front desk people were extremely friendly and helpful. Bathrooms were very clean and hot shower. We would stop again as a pass-through Campground. Level sites."

Weekend activities: Campgrounds near Upper Sandusky frequently schedule events for guests. At Foxfire Family Fun Park, campers enjoy organized recreation: "Provide activities for children such as crafts, scavenger hunt, etc. Also have adult crafts, corn-hole tournaments, and Yuker tournaments." This makes camping more social for weekend visitors.

What you should know

Seasonal population: Many camping areas around Upper Sandusky have a high percentage of seasonal residents. At Arrowhead Lake, "the seasonal ones all have back in and the weekends are pull through which is kinda nice." Weekend campers often find themselves outnumbered by seasonal residents, particularly during peak summer months.

Weather variability: The region experiences frequent summer thunderstorms with potential for heavy downpours. At Mount Gilead State Park Campground, some sites have special features to address this: "Our site had a deck right behind the camping pad because the site has a descent slope. The fire pit was down the slope which was cool being out of site from walkers."

Limited shade: Several campgrounds have minimal tree cover on certain loops or sections. Sites near ponds or lakes typically have less shade than wooded areas. Bringing canopies or awnings is recommended for summer camping trips to create shade when temperatures rise above 85°F.

Tips for camping with families

Swimming options: Water features are major attractions for families camping near Upper Sandusky. Foxfire Family Fun Park offers multiple water recreation options: "Facilities have a laundromat, small game room, outdoor pool, and pond for swimming and fishing. Pond has large blow up slide. Creek runs along part of campground which is fun to play in!"

Halloween activities: Fall camping offers special themed weekends at some campgrounds. One camper at Walnut Grove Campground shared: "My family enjoyed spending a weekend at Walnut Grove. Staff was very kind and informed. I will be coming back next season!" Their review title specifically mentioned "Great Halloween Activities!!"

Site selection: For families wanting more space to play, look for sites on outer loops or corner locations. At Sunset Springs RV Resort, a camper noted: "We absolutely loved it! Everyone was so friendly to us 'weekenders' and can't wait to come back." When booking, request sites away from permanent residences for more room to set up games.

Tips from RVers

Full hookup availability: RV campers should note that while electric is common at most campgrounds, full hookup sites are limited. Delaware State Park offers 212 sites with 50-amp electric service, but water and sewer connections at individual sites are less common throughout the region.

Pull-through access: Larger rigs will find suitable options at several locations. A visitor to Sunset Springs RV Resort reported: "New pull through are perfect for our 40 foot motorhome." For big rigs, call ahead to confirm site dimensions as many older campgrounds weren't designed for today's larger RVs.

Level sites: Many campgrounds in the area feature relatively level terrain, though some have sloped sections. A Heritage Springs visitor mentioned: "Wide roads, good guidance, quite at night, nice laundry, easy to get to. Good water and 30 Amp connection." This makes camping near Upper Sandusky, Ohio favorable for RVers who prefer minimal setup adjustments.
