Best Dog-Friendly Camping near Danville, OH

Mohican Wilderness campground accommodates campers with pets across large, spacious sites, many situated directly on the Mohican River. Dogs must remain leashed throughout the property, with designated pet waste stations available throughout the grounds. Both RV sites with electric hookups and primitive tent camping areas welcome pets without additional fees or breed restrictions. The campground maintains clean facilities and well-maintained grounds, making it comfortable for both human and canine guests. Many sites offer enough space for dogs to relax while still keeping appropriate distance from neighboring campers. Mohican State Park Campground nearby also permits pets on all standard sites and in select cabins, though dogs must remain under physical control at all times and are prohibited from swimming areas.

Several dog-friendly hiking trails wind through the Mohican-Memorial State Forest, providing excellent exercise opportunities for pets and their owners. Campers report the primitive riverfront sites as particularly suitable for dogs who enjoy water access, though the riverbanks can become muddy after rain. Seasonal considerations include summer heat that may limit midday activities with pets, making morning and evening walks more comfortable. Local pet supply stores in Loudonville stock emergency items should campers forget essentials. Both Mohican Wilderness and Kokosing Valley Camp & Canoe enforce quiet hours that apply to barking dogs, especially during evening hours. Proper preparation includes bringing sufficient waste bags, portable water bowls, and ensuring pets have current identification tags in case they become separated from owners while exploring the natural surroundings.

    Alum Creek State Park Campground

    The dog’s favorite campground!

This was the only park we’ve gone to this uear with both a large dog park AND a fenced in dog beach! Folks were friendly at the dog park with bunches of chairs set around like a conversation pit. Lots of water and dog tennis balls were available.

The dog beach was fenced so your dog can be off leash. There is even a fenced in area out in the water to keep the pooches from swimming across the Lake chasing geese.

The campground itself was quite nice and spacious. Some of the most private camping sites I’ve seen in Ohio. Shower facilities we a bit above average mad seemed to be looked after at least once a day (we were there in the off season).

IMHO, one of the nicest campgrounds in the state.

    Cross Creek Camping Resort

    Very nice resort

We stayed two nights here on our tour of Ohio. After staying in state parks, the narrow sites are close with no privacy. Our pull through site was on the (inner) road, so lots of golf carts, cars and campers passing by. All pull through sites are on the road side. The site is not level and our leveling system has the front wheels off the ground. Many full time units here beautiful patios and decor. Staff is nice and friendly. Trash pickup isn’t offered and the walk to dumpster would be excessive for unfit or handicapped. We would stay again. Amenities are clean, as described and dog Park is immaculate but small.

    Alum Creek State Park Campground

Beautiful State Park close to Columbus Ohio

Alum Creek State Park is a beautiful park and great campground just outside the hustle and bustle of downtown Columbus and minutes away from attractions such as the Columbus Zoo.

The campground has good sized sites and is wooded throughout with clean bath houses, well maintained roads, and easy access for big rigs.

There is also a very nice dog park in the park including dog beaches with lake access for your pups to swim.

We love this campground and the beautiful lake and appreciate the easy access to local attractions, shopping, and more.

    Alum Creek State Park Campground

Would be 5 star except for this

Alum Creek is just beautiful, nice sites, most of them are at least partially shaded, lots of woods, hiking trails, the lake, it is what I think of when I think of State Park campground camping in Ohio. There are a couple problems. 1. Only ONE little dump station. This is a big campground, so if you're leaving Sunday, you better get up at the crack of dawn to get to the station, otherwise be prepared to wait in a long long line of RV's. We by-passed the long line and stopped at a different State Park campground on the way home and paid 10.00 to use their dump station. 2. They never answer their phone at the campground office. I mean NEVER. If you have a question you will just have to deal with the reserveamerica people who really know nothing other than what they read on the campground website. So basically you know as much as they do. It's maddening. We will go back, but it's a 2 hour drive so it won't be anytime soon.

    Alum Creek State Park Campground

    Alum Creek State Park Campground

great state park campground. There are some full hook ups but mostly just electric. They have pancake breakfast on Saturday mornings through summer and doughnuts on Sunday. Helpful camphost. There is a campground beach and boat launch. Lost of hiking paths in the campground and in the park area. A great dog park with lake entrance for the pups. tmThere is also some mountain bike trails. Plenty to do for everyone.

    Salt Fork State Park Campground

The right side of the fork

Dog park!! and right on the lake!! Found this by mistake on our way out, and the dogs loved it. Access to lake, a beach, well fenced. I would give Salt Fork SP extra stars for this one, especially if there were campsites co-located.

Camp ground is easily accessible being just 6 miles from I70, leaving the convenience of Cambridge and city amenities close by while allowing for great trails and solitude. Stayed in campground A, and the front end has little shade, but being here in autumn was perfect for lots of sunshine on site. Sites with trees for tree tents is minimal. Drinking fountains are dispersed fairly frequently throughout campground, but RV hookups with water were limited during my stay. Shower houses and comfort houses all have flushers and sinks.

TICK WARNING!!!! After a morning hike down wooded Trail, we spent A LONG TIME pulling ticks from dogs...even though the temps were in the 30's overnight and everyone was treated with flea & tick protection.

    Alum Creek State Park Campground

Beautiful State Park with extra perks for the Dogs

In addition to having a pretty lake, lovely campsites that are spread apart nicely, clean facilities, lots of shade, boat ramps, etc.. this park is unique for it's Dog Park facility.

2 large fenced in field areas. One for small dogs, and one for large. There is enough room for several games of dog frisbee to happen at once. Then, there are 2 large fenced in areas for lake access. Balls, dog doo bags, trash bins.. all there. Lots of shade, water fountains, and plenty of running room. I can't rave about this park enough!

The only downside is there is poison ivy lacing the trail from the campsite down to the water, and the Dog Park portion is about 2 miles from the campsites.

Guide to Danville

The Danville area sits in Knox County, Ohio at approximately 1,000 feet elevation where the Kokosing River flows through the countryside. The region features a mix of wooded hillsides and river valleys with multiple campgrounds located along waterways. Winter camping options are limited with most facilities closing between late October and early May.

What to do

Hiking trails: Mohican State Park Campground offers miles of hiking paths for all skill levels. "Lots of hiking trails and waterfalls. Free hike-in camping available here too," notes Nicole K., who appreciates the natural features.

Canoeing and kayaking: The Kokosing River provides excellent paddling opportunities near Danville. "We go every year and do the 20 mile kayaking trip, such a nice little spot along the river & the best way to kick off summer!" shares Lexi K. from Mohican Wilderness.

Primitive camping: Mohican-Memorial State Forest offers free backpacking sites for those seeking solitude. "There are 10 free camp sites for backpackers in Mohican, each is about a mile hike in, no vehicles can reach these sites. There are 4 on the mountain bike trail and 6 on the horse trails, first come first serve," explains John H.

Fishing spots: Multiple campgrounds offer fishing access, particularly at Pleasant Hill Lake. According to Marci P., the primitive campground "is right alongside the river and at the bottom of the gorge... Listening to the river is what makes this place peaceful... There are also good fishing."

What campers like

Large, private sites: Mohican Wilderness campground features exceptionally spacious campsites. "We have camped here 3 times now and even though it's a large park the sites are huge so you still feel like you can kick back and relax," states Andrea F., highlighting the balance between amenities and privacy.

River access: Kokosing Valley Camp & Canoe provides camping directly beside the Kokosing River. Rebekah K. mentions, "Nice shaded camp sites available. Quiet and relaxing. Catch a tube ride down the Kokosing River."

Off-season opportunities: Winter camping options exist at select locations. "Another Thanksgiving spent in our camper and it was so nice and relaxing. There were more campers than expected this weekend... Camping in the off season is our favorite time of year," shares Andrea F. about Mohican State Park.

Clean facilities: Multiple campgrounds maintain well-kept shower facilities and grounds. "The campground itself is well maintained. Just a heads up as we parked in the wrong section make sure you go to the outer section of the parking lot," notes Kenpocentaur K. regarding Mohican Memorial State Forest.

What you should know

Cell service limitations: Coverage varies significantly by campground and carrier. One camper at Mohican State Park notes, "No cell service with Verizon at this park," which affects planning for those who need to stay connected.

Weather considerations: The Mohican area receives substantial rainfall in spring and can be hot in summer. Proper shelter and cooling options become essential between June and August.

Reservation systems: Each campground has different booking policies. Park and Pack sites in Mohican-Memorial State Forest operate on first-come basis with on-site registration. "Make sure you get a reservation at the kiosk by the ranger station in the forest. Do not go to the state park as that is completely different," advises Ryan R.

Off-road challenges: Some campgrounds have difficult access roads. Gregory L. warns about Wally World: "Getting here proved to be tricky, as it seems all of the GPS apps and my Garmin routed us on a county road that is not fit for RVs of any type... Do note the bridge you need to cross has a weight limit of 10 tons."

Tips for camping with families

Indoor activities for rainy days: Mohican Adventures Campground provides weather backup options. "Amazing campgrounds, with great amenities, clean and updated restrooms & shower house. Indoor pool perfect for the super hot summer months. So much for the kids to do!" writes Nicole S.

Kid-friendly environments: Several campgrounds cater specifically to families. Katie Jo B. describes Mohican State Park as having "Super super big place as far as campsites go and quantity... Definitely a good place to go not super secluded tho, perfect for families!"

Playground access: Multiple facilities offer play areas for children. Katelyn P. says Butler-Mohican KOA has "hiking, fishing, pool and gameroom. Very close to Mohican State Park for canoeing and scenery."

Pet guidelines for kids: When bringing children and dogs camping, choose sites with adequate space for both. Remember that all area campgrounds require leashed pets at all times for safety.

Tips from RVers

Site selection: Most campgrounds offer varied hookup options. At Pleasant Hill Lake Park Campground, Michelle H. advises: "We have stayed mostly in area E and the new F side of the campground. The new F sites have concrete pads and plenty of space. Only lacking in mature trees to offer shade."

Dump station locations: Not all campgrounds offer full hookups. "Only downside is most of the sites don't have a sewer hookup so make sure to bring a portable tank if you are staying for more than a couple of days," notes Gregory L. about Wally World.

Leveling considerations: Several campgrounds have uneven terrain. At Mohican Adventures Campground, Maria K. shares: "Nice clean and friendly staff the only complaint is that the sites are not flat."

Winter water access: For cold-weather camping, know which facilities maintain water service. Andrea F. reports about Mohican State Park: "This particular park has potable water on by the dump station and the dump station is open. The water at the full hook up sites are turned off."
