Within an hour's drive from Sterling Forest, New York, campgrounds operate through seasonal constraints, with most sites open from spring to fall. Harriman State Park borders the forest, while additional camping options stretch across the New York-New Jersey border. Campgrounds range from full-facility to primitive, with several offering lake access and trail connections.
What to do
Appalachian Trail access: The Appalachian Trail passes through High Point State Park Campground, offering hikers a convenient jumping-off point. "I spent two nights camping with my niece and this campground was perfect. The site was maybe a 50-yard walk-in and we barely heard anyone around us and had a real wilderness feel. We fit in a hike up to the Appalachian Trail from our campsite, swam at the pond (Lake Marcia), and got in a fishing session at Steeny Kill Lake."
Lake activities: Multiple campgrounds feature lake access for swimming, fishing and paddling. Mahlon Dickerson Reservation offers hiking trails connecting to a lake. "We always hike to the lake here, it's a very easy hike and also very peaceful. Definitely come here when you get a chance."
Winter camping options: While most campgrounds close for winter, some cabins remain available year-round. Stokes State Forest keeps cabins open even in colder months. "I bought wood from a house across the street from the entrance to the cabins and it was damp, but in November, I wasn't complaining, it took awhile but I got a nice blaze going. You need that wood stove to heat up the cabin."
What campers like
Platform tent sites: Many campsites near Sterling Forest feature raised platforms, keeping tents dry in wet conditions. "The biggest positive about Beaver Pond is how spread out it was. You definitely feel like you have your own space and are not camping on top of your neighbor. Many of the camping options were on platforms which is especially nice if it recently rained or if you are expecting rain during your stay."
Off-season camping: Several reviewers note the benefits of camping during shoulder seasons. "Ranger said that during summer weekends the grounds fill up and can be quite noisy, but mid-week during the off-season it was great. Expect to purchase firewood, although scrounging for kindling was possible."
Wildlife viewing: The Stephen & Betsy Corman AMC Harriman Outdoor Center provides opportunities to observe local fauna. "The lake is very peaceful, and home to beavers we watched from the dining hall patio." Bear activity occurs throughout the region, requiring proper food storage practices.
What you should know
Bear precautions: Bear activity requires vigilance at all campgrounds in the region. "Welcome to Bear Mountain grumbles the park ranger as he sits in complete darkness! He is in his ranger hut, checking in the late evening arrivals to the campground. He offers us a highlighted map to our site, wishes us a good stay, and gives us the run down on bear activity in the area."
Variable water access: Water availability differs significantly between campgrounds. Wawayanda Shelter has limited facilities but is close to water sources. "It's within 15 mins NOBO of the park office where there is a 24:7 bathroom with sink and trash, and a fresh water spigot outside."
Site selection considerations: Campsite terrain varies dramatically across the region. "This campground was clean and quiet. RV hook-ups, tent platforms, and rustic tent sites were available. Our rustic tent site had a few good options for pitching a tent, as well as picnic table and fire ring."
Tips for camping with families
Playground access: Some campgrounds provide play areas and family-specific amenities. "Short distance from the NYC, very organized, clean pond, has a playground, showers, bathroom. Your phone will have signal."
Group site options: For families camping together, dedicated group sites offer better accommodation. "The group campsites are big enough for the amount of people you can have, have picnic benches, a fire ring, a composting outhouse toilet just for the site, and one of those flat charcoal 'grills'."
Kid-friendly activities: Beaver Pond Campground schedules regular events for children. "Sebago has a ton of activities like outdoor movies and communal bonfires on weekends. I was told by ranger Joe they also do Karaoke nights too."
Tips from RVers
Hookup logistics: Black Bear RV Park provides full hookups but with seasonal limitations. "Have stayed here several times - great location and nice, full hook-up sites. Back-in and pull through sites and can accommodate large rigs. A little expensive but everything is included."
Water connection challenges: RVers should check water hookup proximity. "Website lists water hook ups at long distances but they have hose reels to help with that. Our site (15) said 75' however the 50' hose reel made it to our rv connection."
Site leveling issues: Several campgrounds have uneven terrain challenging for RVs. "So, we got in with no reservation, which was great. It's in the same park as the high point, also great. The sites are varied, some have tent platforms, it's just off the AT, but we have a trailer and the 'trailer' sites aren't level."
