Best RV Parks & Resorts near Picatinny Arsenal, NJ

Multiple RV parks around Picatinny Arsenal provide a range of camping options with varying amenities. Mahlon Dickerson Reservation offers level paved sites with 50-amp electric service and water hookups during warmer months, along with a dump station for convenience. "The sites are nicely wooded, very well spaced, fairly level with 50A service and water hookup. Although the water spigots were shared between sites, they provide hose caddies that should reach most RV hookups," noted one visitor. Pleasant Acres Farm RV Resort features full hookup sites with 50-amp service, operating from April through October. Mountain Top RV Park provides big rig access with electric hookups and dump facilities, while Liberty Harbor RV Park in Jersey City has 90 sites with 30/50-amp connections and pull-through options for larger motorhomes.

Planning for steep terrain and tight turns is essential when navigating to several parks in this region. Cell service varies significantly between locations, with some campers reporting weak signals at parks like Panther Lake, where according to one reviewer, "WiFi only around office and bad cell service with Verizon." Many parks are seasonal, closing between late October and April, though some like Black Bear RV Park remain open year-round. Pet policies are generally accommodating, with most RV parks allowing dogs with standard leash requirements. For motorhomes needing propane service, visitors should plan ahead as on-site filling is limited at most campgrounds. Pull-through sites are available at several parks but tend to fill quickly during summer weekends and fall foliage season, making advance reservations necessary.

    Kymers Camping Resort

Fun, friendly & nestled in the woods

We stayed at Kymer's on a whim for a weekend, so we could be close to Mountain Creek for a Spartan Race. It truly exceeded our expectations in all aspects. This is a family friendly, camper-friendly place. Lots of seasonals- everyone waves, everyone stops to chat. This is what a campground should feel like. The sound of laughter and play sitting around the huge, clean pool was refreshing. Our site was Oak 10. It was level, good placement of electric water & sewer connects. Camp store has all the basics you might need. There is a brook that flows adjacent to the property. It's peaceful & magical. Pet friendly, although we didn't have our pup with us. We will be back again. I almost feel like I'm revealing a hidden gem with this post. 💎

    Colonial Woods Family Resort

    Not big rig friendly.

Ok so let me start off by saying. If we still had our smaller travel trailer this review would’ve been at least 4 stars. However this place is not the place for you if you have a fifth wheel. The roads are very narrow, pretty sizable boulders on both sides, trees are very low and need to be trimmed (almost took my ac out with a huge limb). Now if you’re not big rig camping like we do, this place is great for you. Close to the ringing rocks and three other towns. We were able to do so much even though it rained the entire weekend we were there.

    Mountain Vista Campground

    Mt Vista Campground

Beautiful Campground. Clean. Gravel sites. Fire ring and picnic table. All sites have ample room. Lots of pull through for bigger rigs. Wooded. Large dog park. Love the Campground except our site is near a fairly busy road which takes away from that beautiful tranquility. They have camouflaged it as best they could. Friendly staff. Lots to do. Pool, tennis. Sauna, pond for fishing ( catch & release ). Would definitely recommend.

    Tobyhanna State Park Campground

    Great family campground

This place only gets 4 stars because I thought we were going to have water and electric hook ups. They only have 2 kinds of sites, modern electric (only electric) and primitive. They have a potable water station and dump station and very few sites with electric hook up. They also have specific pet friendly sites. We had a wonderful time here. We went for Father’s Day weekend in June. The lake is gorgeous! Beachfront swimming and boat rentals, great biking and hiking trails. Sites are mostly separated by trees but are still close. Bath houses were very clean and they have a dish washing sink as well. Beach is within walking and biking distance. Two cons- Bath house at the beach is 50 cents for a 2-minute shower, so we just went back to the campground bath house to clean up. The playground near sites 53-56 is a little underwhelming. Otherwise was a great stay! We already booked another stay in September this year!

The Pines Campground — Promised Land State Park

Quiet, just remote enough, a Great Lake, and nice camp hosts

I stayed for three nights in a pull through trailer site with 50 AMP and 30 AMP electric. Easy to get in and out of, nice and shady, big spaces so you were not on top of one another, and nice and quiet. Clean and modern bath house, water close by, and great camp hosts. Definitely recommend it.

    Mahlon Dickerson Reservation

    Nice, small, spacious campground

We stayed at site 15 for 5 days. The sites are nicely wooded, very well spaced, fairly level with 50A service and water hookup. Although the water spigots were shared between sites, they provide hose caddies that should reach most RV hookups. No sewer hookup, but there is a convenient dump station. There are no fire rings in the RV section, only raised grills. We had the place pretty much to ourselves during the week, but the weekend did get busy. AT&T had ok data connection with 1-2 bars most of the time. There is no satellite coverage due to the heavy tree canopy. OTA TV was very inconsistent using an external omni antenna. There is no WiFi. There is a very nice network of trails in the reservation, most if not all were leashed dog friendly. There is a very nice restaurant, Stone Water, less than 10 miles away and is right on lake Hopatcong.

Lower Lake Campground Northwoods Area — Promised Land State Park

    Northwoods Campground

Big sites with 30 amp service available for RVs and trailers. Each site has a large picnic table and a fire ring with an adjustable grate. The pull-through sites don’t offer much in the way of privacy, but that’s the trade off for convenience. There are two potable water spigots in the campground. The bathhouse offers warm showers, 2 dishwashing sinks, and a coin-operated washer and dryer. The facilities are kept very clean. On the weekends it can get pretty crowded, so it tends to be louder at night then, but the camp hosts and the rangers do a good job of enforcing quiet hours. Access points to several trails are very near the campground. As with all PA state parks, alcohol is prohibited. The park doesn’t have a camp store, however, there is a small general store on Route 390 (The Lake Store) just north of the park that would have any essentials you may have forgotten, as well as ice for your cooler.

    Panther Lake Camping Resort

    Stayed all summer

We stayed at Panther Lake as full timers all season. Great during the week but very busy on weekends. Could be noisy with children not very well supervised.
Friendly, helpful staff. Cable TV poor when it rains. Cell service spotty all carriers. No internet at sites. Lake beautiful and pool nice.

Guide to Picatinny Arsenal

Camping options near Picatinny Arsenal, New Jersey are scattered across the northwestern region of the state and into neighboring Pennsylvania and New York. The terrain features rolling hills and elevations ranging from 700 to 1,200 feet above sea level. Winter camping is limited as temperatures regularly drop below freezing from December through March, with seasonal closures affecting water service at many campgrounds.

What to do

Hiking trails access: Mahlon Dickerson Reservation has multiple trail options surrounding the campsites. "There are plenty of trails, water (creeks, pond, lake) views and even if the place is packed there is PLENTY of room," notes one visitor to Mahlon Dickerson Reservation.

Visit NYC via public transit: From Liberty Harbor RV Park, campers can access Manhattan without driving. "The light rail is a block away, and the path train is about 8. There is a ferry 100-yards away that takes you to Wall Street M-F," according to a camper at Liberty Harbor RV Park.

Animal interactions: Several campgrounds offer farm animal encounters for children. At Pleasant Acres Farm RV Resort, "The farm has goats, a donkey, and a pony within the campground. Very cool," writes one reviewer who appreciated the unique camping experience.

What campers like

Secluded wooded sites: Campers appreciate the privacy at certain campgrounds. "The campground is small but also secluded. We always hike to the lake here, it's a very easy hike and also very peaceful," explains a regular visitor to Mahlon Dickerson Reservation.

Location convenience: The strategic position of some RV sites near Picatinny Arsenal makes them ideal for visitors. "This is a prime location for visiting the city or heading down the shore. The light rail is a block away," notes a camper who stayed at Liberty Harbor RV Park.

Reliable utilities: Some campgrounds maintain excellent infrastructure. At Thousand Trails Timothy Lake South, one RVer noted, "Best water pressure I have seen on the east coast, unregulated it's over 80 psi. Cell service is ok. Verizon is 25 down 10 up."

What you should know

Cell service limitations: Connectivity varies dramatically between campgrounds in this region. At Timothy Lake South, "Tmobile is unusable," according to one camper, while another noted, "Cell service for most providers is practically non-existent... try telling that to the two millennials that were staying with us."

Site selection matters: At Tri-State RV Park, location within the campground affects experience. "Located just off the highway so lots of vehicle noise 24/7. Sites are on a gravel lot," explains one camper. Another advises on Timothy Lake South: "Sites are long but narrow."

Winter operations: Several campgrounds remain open year-round with limited services. At Black Bear RV Park, one winter visitor reported, "We arrived after 8pm but I had called ahead to confirm our reservation. Everything is handled no-contact so there is no paper work to sign or pick up."

Tips for camping with families

Animal attractions: Children enjoy interaction with farm animals at some campgrounds. "My daughter loved the horses and goats," reports a family who stayed at Pleasant Acres Farm Campground.

Activity planning: When staying at Pleasant Acres Farm RV Resort, families should note, "There were some organized activities which was nice, not as much as a Jellystone Park. Plenty to occupy the kids. Playground, hayride, animals to feed (goats, chickens, donkey and pony)."

Facility considerations: Bathroom availability varies seasonally. "All the buildings are closed due to Covid, so no laundry & no bathroom," reported a camper at Black Bear RV Park, highlighting the importance of checking current facility status.

Tips from RVers

Water hookup logistics: At Mahlon Dickerson Reservation, "Website lists water hook ups at long distances but they have hose reels to help with that. Our site (15) said 75' however the 50' hose reel made it to our RV connection."

Road navigation challenges: RVers should prepare for difficult entry at some parks. At Mountain Top RV Park, "If you're booking, it may be best to book on the upper levels because the lower area where we were did flood pretty bad a couple times when there was a lot of rain."

Dump station access: Timing matters for waste disposal at some campgrounds. At Liberty Harbor RV Park, "On a slow checkout day, you might get lucky enough to not wait in line for the dump station," cautions one experienced RVer.
