Fall camping from September through mid-November provides cooler nights around 45-55°F with reduced crowds at most facilities.
What to do
Hiking trail access: Pleasant Acres Farm RV Resort provides easy access to local trails with scenic mountain views. "This north western NJ campground has fantastic scenic views and plenty of planned activities to keep you occupied," notes James V. The campground sits at a higher elevation offering cooler temperatures during summer months.
Animal interactions: Families can enjoy farm animals at certain campgrounds within 30 minutes of Mine Hill. "The farm has goats, a donkey, and a pony within the campground. Very cool," reports Faith D. Children can feed animals and learn about farm life during scheduled morning activities.
City exploration: Liberty Harbor RV Park serves as a base for exploring New York City, located about 45 minutes from Mine Hill. "There is a ferry 100-yards away that takes you to Wall Street M-F. There is a great market about 1/4 of a mile away, and the path that can take you to WTC or 33rd Street area is only a mile away," mentions Shawn B.
What campers like
Spacious wooded sites: Mahlon Dickerson Reservation offers well-spaced camping areas with natural buffers. "The sites are spaced well and have a nice bonus of large fire rings set back in the woods a bit from the pad that you park on," explains Greg S. Sites include level concrete pads surrounded by mature forest.
Seasonal activities: Fall camping provides unique experiences in the Mine Hill region. "We visited in October so leaves were falling and it was perfect weather," shares Janelle G. Weekend organized activities typically run through mid-October at most campgrounds with reduced schedules during weekdays.
Easy waterfront access: Fishing opportunities exist within 30 minutes of Mine Hill at several reservations. "There are plenty of trails, water (creeks, pond, lake) views and even if the place is packed there is PLENTY of room," notes John S. Morning hours offer the best fishing conditions with less crowded shorelines.
What you should know
Varying facility maintenance: Campground upkeep differs significantly across the region. "In general the camping spots are not well maintained, weedy, un-level and picnic tables are weathered and warped," reports Coffee&Camping T. Expect more consistent maintenance at county-operated facilities versus some private campgrounds.
Limited cell coverage: Many camping areas experience spotty cellular reception. "Cell service is awful for AT&T and our T-Mobile gateway. Had to move to a new site to get away from the trees to get starlink connectivity," notes Nick E. at Thousand Trails Timothy Lake South.
Garbage disposal systems: Some campgrounds require campers to transport trash to central collection points. "The garbage situation was the worst. Most campsites have a service, they tell you to leave it at a specific location by a certain time or they have many garbage cans throughout. This place had their garbage and recycling very far away," explains Janelle G.
Tips for camping with families
Playground considerations: When booking with children, check playground locations relative to camping areas. "The office, playground, dog park, pool, laundry are located at the top of the hill. Camping spots are downhill, a good distance from the office and amenities," warns Coffee&Camping T.
Weekend activity planning: Scheduled events concentrate on weekends at most Mine Hill area campgrounds. "There were some organized activities which was nice, not as much as a Jellystone Park," notes Janelle G. Most activities run Saturday mornings through early evening with fewer options on Sundays.
Wildlife awareness: Mahlon Dickerson Reservation and surrounding areas require proper food storage due to wildlife. "There are a lot of bear warnings here so that gave us a bit of pause with our three little boys," shares Greg S. Campers should secure food items in vehicles or designated storage containers overnight.
Tips from RVers
Urban camping navigation: Tri-State RV Park offers easy highway access for larger vehicles. "Easy on, easy off. Lots of pull through sites. Next to grocery store. CLEAN bathrooms, showers, laundry," reports BENdejo. Exit 53 provides direct access with a straight drive down to the end of the road.

Off-season availability: Winter camping options exist within 45 minutes of Mine Hill. "Open during the winter. Easy on, easy off. Lots of pull through sites," notes BENdejo.
