The Best Hike-In Camping Near Harry S. Truman Lake, Missouri

Berry Bend Campground sits on the shores of Harry S. Truman Lake in the hills of western Missouri. Visitors enjoy fishing, hunting, swimming and boating.Click here for the Harry S. Truman Lake virtual tour. Recreation Berry Bend Area is an excellent fishing location. Anglers find crappie, largemouth bass and blue and flathead catfish. Truman Lake is also a popular destination for tournament fishermen. Several miles of trails are available for hikers and horses within Berry Bend. The Park Trail is a 2.5 mile trail that is a great hike for beginners and those wanting to explore the area. The West Trail is approximately 10 miles and traverses many steep ridges and valleys, while the East Trail is approximately 16 miles and is somewhat more level and overlooks the lake in several areas. Both the West and the East trails have cut through trails for riders that dont wish to go the entire route. Facilities This large, year round campground offers two loops. B loop consists of eight campsites. B1 is a primitive site and the rest are very spacious with full hook-ups including 50 amp electricity, water and sewer. There is a flush toilet in the B loop but no showers. Campers needing shower facilities must use the shower house in the C Loop. C Loop offers 110 sites with 30 amp electric hookups. Amenities include flush and pit toilets, showers, drinking water, laundry facilities and a dump station. A boat ramp, playgrounds and sand beach offer additional recreation opportunities. Natural Features Truman Lake lies among rolling hills and rocky bluffs. Dense hardwood forests studded with mature pine trees cover the area. Nearby Attractions The 950 miles of shoreline around Truman Lake provide plentiful opportunities for fun in the outdoors. Many parks surround the lake, including Harry S. Truman State Park. The Harry S. Truman Visitor Center sits atop Kaysinger Bluff and provides a spectacular view of the dam and reservoir. Exhibits provide information about the rich history of the Osage River Valley from pre-civilization to modern day. Waterfowl, bald eagles and turkey vultures are commonly seen from the observation deck. ADA Access: N

**There are five primitive camping areas. One is for groups by special use permit only and one is only open October 1 through January 15. The main campground has 51 sites with 26 of them able to accommodate trailers. Camping is all on a first come first served basis.**

Lead Mine Conservation Area is in northeastern Dallas County, 40 miles south of Lake of the Ozarks, 12 miles north of Bennett Springs, five miles east of Tunas, and 21 miles northeast of Buffalo.

The area provides about two miles of Niangua River frontage and has a 3.5-mile stretch of Jakes Creek running through it. The area also has several wildlife watering ponds and seven springs and is composed mainly of forest land.

The Conservation Department purchased the original 600 acres for the Lead Mine Conservation Area in 1965 through a University of Missouri land grant. Additional land was acquired with Pittman-Robertson and Dingell-Johnson funding, and the state conservation sales tax, increasing the area to 7,761 acres.
During early settlement in the late 1800s and early 1900s, some lead mining did take place near the area. However, evidence of this is hard to find.

Many people made their living and raised their families on small farms that now make up Lead Mine Conservation Area. The town of Lead Mine, just one-quarter mile west, is a small community known for its country atmosphere, hand-made goods and horse drawn buggies.

Lead Mine Conservation Area contains many excellent examples of dolomite glade communities, oak-hickory uplands, and clear running springs. Deer, turkey, raccoon, squirrel, rabbit, coyote, and many other small animals and birds are commonly seen from the gravel roads and forest trails.

Wildlife habitat management includes the creation of watering ponds and manipulation of fields within the forest to provide added food sources. Timber harvesting is also an important element in habitat management. It produces forage and cover for forest wildlife.

There are five primitive camping areas. One is for groups by special use permit only and one is only open October 1 through January 15. The main campground has 51 sites with 26 of them able to accommodate trailers. Camping is all on a first come first served basis.

This area has an unmanned shooting range. The Range is Closed on Monday's for Maintenance.

It’s a perfect place for sailing – with a perpetual southwest breeze and a nationally recognized sailing school housed at the marina. Two boat launches make it easy to get in the water, as does a swimming beach. Want to stay on land? The park is great for photographing wildlife, picnicking with the family, hiking or just reveling in the beauty of southern Missouri. The park also offers a range of lodging from campsites to cabins. Stockton State Park

In the late 1850’s the village that gave Bagnell Dam its name was formed on the banks of the Osage River. The population of the area grew steadily to over 3,000 people by the time Bagnell Dam was being built in the late 1920’s and early 1930’s. Many, many other workers and their family also camped or lived around the town of Bagnell during that time. Remains of an old gravel cleaning plant used to help build the dam still stand on the river bank just east of the Fish and Steakhouse​ Around the turn of the century Bagnell enjoyed the title of“The Railroad Tie Capital of the World” with tie yards located where the present campground is now located. Ties ware floated down the Osage River or brought by wagon and then loaded on the Missouri Pacific Railroad, whose depot stood where the present swimming pool is located, and shipped across the nation. The old railroad still parallels Highway Y The bustling little town had several businesses including a general store, garages, a lumberyard, café, and poultry house. A ferry connected them to the Osage River and connected Highway 54 to Bagnell. The ferry crossing is still visible from the lower side of the campground. All was good until a devastating fire burned down several businesses in 1931. Another fire in 1932 further destroyed more of the town. The ferry crossing in Bagnell was being replaced by traffic choosing to travel across the newly completed Bagnell Dam. The population began to shift toward the new structure also. The flood of 1943 was almost the final blow to the town as it caused the move of the school to the location of the present day School of the Osage preschool on the strip. The church was also moved closer to the newly re-routed Highway 54 location. With Bagnell’s spirit still alive revival has been slow but sure with the addition of the campgrounds and the fish and steakhouse. In 2011, another fire devastated Bagnell when a fire broke out in an apartment that was attached to the restaurant. Along with Camp Bagnell Fish and Steakhouse, three residences were claimed by the fire. Bagnell has been down several times but never for the count. With new ownership we are back in action to support the past, and once again bringing the people in the area the food that they love. The bustling atmosphere will once again thrive as it has since the 1800’s in Ole Camp Bagnell. We hope that you enjoy your experience with us. Come back and see us, we’re always happy to see you!
