Best Campgrounds near Collins, MO

The Collins, Missouri area features several established campgrounds surrounding Pomme de Terre Lake and Stockton Lake, with options ranging from basic tent sites to full-service RV parks and cabin rentals. Pittsburg Area Campground in Pomme de Terre State Park offers tent, RV, cabin, and yurt accommodations with electric hookups, showers, and reservable sites. Nearby, Arrowhead Point RV Park & Cabins provides year-round camping with full hookups for RVs and cabin rentals. Most developed campgrounds in the region maintain shower facilities, picnic tables, and fire rings, while some feature boat ramps and swimming beaches for water recreation.

Road conditions and campsite availability vary significantly by season, with flooding sometimes affecting lakeside sites, particularly at Pomme de Terre Lake. A visitor noted, "We arrived to find that the normal lake level had risen from 830 ft to 860+. Needless to say almost all lakeside campgrounds were closed." Water levels at both Pomme de Terre and Stockton lakes can fluctuate dramatically, occasionally closing waterfront sites during spring and early summer. Many campgrounds require reservations, especially during peak summer months and holiday weekends. Cell service varies throughout the region, with some areas reporting good coverage while others have limited connectivity. Temperatures typically range from hot and humid summers to mild springs and falls, making April-May and September-October ideal for comfortable camping conditions.

Waterfront access represents a major draw for campers in the Collins area, with several campgrounds offering direct lake views or private paths to the water. A camper described their experience: "Most spots are lakefront on an uncommercialized lake. I fish from a kayak and was never overwhelmed by boats and the fishing is fantastic." Fishing opportunities abound in both lakes, with bass, crappie, and trout being popular catches. Campers frequently mention the cleanliness of facilities at state park campgrounds, particularly noting well-maintained shower houses and restrooms. Privacy between sites varies considerably, with some loops offering wooded separation while others feature more open layouts. Wildlife sightings commonly include deer, raccoons, bald eagles, and various waterfowl. For those seeking quieter experiences, weekday visits typically offer more solitude than busy summer weekends when boat traffic and campground occupancy reach their peak.

    Crabtree Cove, Stockton Lake, MO

    Another beautiful USACE campground

An absolutely wonderful campground with great low rates in the shoulder season($10 for electric during shoulder season ) Plus if you have the America the beautiful pass its 50% off. Regular season rates $14-$20 Warm showers with very little water pressure... but other than that a wonderful campground. Most of the campsites have shade but some of the non electric ones by the lake do not despite what Recreation.gov says.

    Stockton State Park Campground

Nicely maintained campground, great hiking trails, no privacy.

This was a nice campground that was well maintained. The sites are quite close together with little privacy and minimal shade from the trees. We stayed in the East Loop which looked less popular than the West Loop. There was a short walk less than 5 minutes down a trail to the lake that was gorgeous. And a longer hike that went along the edge of the lake that was absolutely lovely and easy enough for the young kids in our group to do. If you don't mind being close to your neighbors it's a nice spot!

We did check out the walk in sites here, but were not able to stay in them. They looked awesome and were a short 5 minute walk from the parking. A great beginner site for walk in camping and there were carts at the start of the trail for your gear. Both loops had decent playgrounds for the kids.

    Orleans Trail

Private, wooded campground near the lake!

We stayed in the D loop at site D37. All of the sites in the D loop are more spaced out and wooded than in the other loops. They also don't have electric and the bathroom is a vault toilet.

Site D37 was able to fit our two tents comfortably but I don't think there was a flat space to fit a third. It was also pretty overgrown and unkept. So bring lots of bug spray. Site D39 is pretty close and it would work well for a group needing multiple spots. We had a view of the lake across the road. The bathroom was a several minute walk.

Site D37 across from us had water access and looked really nice. Other nearby spots D40 was also quite heavily wooded and didn't look like it had much more than one semi-flat spot for a tent. But it was definitely very private!

We used the shower houses(which we had to drive to get to) and they were okay. The water wouldn't get hot, but we didn't take ice cold showers. The swim beach was the highlight of this location and very nice!

    Damsite

    Another great COE Campground

Sites were nice and level. Most sites had water and electric. Five showers and five flushing toilets that were nicely kept. Beautiful view on the lake. Sites 25 through 45 have a little or no shade. FYI. Sites are fairly close together, but they are staggered so you’re not right next-door to your neighbor.

    Riverfront Campground and Canoe

The cabins are nothing like website

Terrible decision to rent a cabin , turns out not a cabin but a room and bath. Nothing at all like site. Ask for explanation and extra coats. Ask for another correct cabin , they said it was cabin? I ask for Someone to come by and explain the situation. No other cabins and no refunds… the bait and switch ! bewared awful service, photos of cabins, we stayed in a room with a bathroom that was in the garage of a cabin? Heard baby crying the 1night when down and agian said this is not the cabin we reserved and also extra charges on my credit card. I ask for someone to explain why the add was nothing at all like payed for and we requested another correct cabin or refund. nothing from anyone , no one came to room , or called me . We went to fish at Bennett spring with grandson 14 birthday. He felt and I felt uncomfortable with baby crying knew we been scammed by internet false photos and prepaid. We left early to stay in lodge just down road from riverfront. We never got refund and excuses that they fixed web page and grandson posted negative review, I said why would we give a good review? was a room not a cabin, payed the mortgage on the cabin that the campground family lived in!! This was the worst experience with renting a cabin. Not one photo online or description was correct. Then overcharged on credit card? I hope this helps someone else who’s thinking of cabin at Riverfront Campground.

    Osceola RV Park & Campground

    Quick stop for night

We were passing through and decided to check this place out since it was getting late and they offered full hookups. It was only $22.00 for the night and the host was very nice and helpful . The park was clean and we felt safe. It was not noisy. There are large trees that make nice shade. I didn’t use the restrooms so I can’t say anything on that.

    Crabtree Cove, Stockton Lake, MO

    Many beautiful campsites

This campground has a wide variety of sites, from fully shaded to partially shaded, some a stone's throw from the water

Guide to Collins

Camping spots near Collins, Missouri center around two major bodies of water—Pomme de Terre Lake and Stockton Lake. The region sits at approximately 850 feet elevation with terrain characterized by limestone bluffs and oak-hickory forests. Winter camping is available at select locations, with some Corps of Engineers campgrounds offering free off-season sites between January and mid-March when water services are suspended.

What to do

Kayaking mapped trails: Stockton State Park Campground offers designated kayak routes on the lake. "Great state park. Cleanest restrooms I've seen. Great trails. Bring the kayaks. They have some pretty cool kayak marked trails on the lake. Beautiful sail boats to see as well!" notes a visitor.

Fishing from shore: At Damsite, campers can fish directly from the rocky shoreline. "A lot of people tie their boats to shore below their campsite. Beautiful sunrises and the sun sets over the dam. I really like this campground. Family friendly and everyone seems to have a dog but people do a good job of picking up after them," explains one reviewer.

Hiking lake views: The Pittsburg Area Campground has scenic trails with wildlife viewing opportunities. "Only on real hiking trail on Pittsburgh loop but it was filled with bluff views and lots of wildlife as well as a public beach," shares a camper who appreciated the natural surroundings.

What campers like

Private water access: Many campers value the direct lake access at Hermitage Area Campground. One camper described their experience: "Beautiful views form the campsite—tent camping on a peninsula in surrounded by Pomme de Terre lake. Nice and quiet this weekend, beautiful clear water waiting to be canoed in."

Secluded camping spots: The 400 loop at Pittsburg Area Campground offers more privacy than other areas. "We chose the 400 loop of Pittsburgh for its secluded spots. Spaces are not stacked on top of each other. You're in the woods so take bug spray. Level paved lots to choose from. Fire rings and covered picnic tables. Lots of shade," notes a reviewer.

Affordable camping options: Winter and off-season rates provide significant savings. At Damsite Campground, "During the off season (Oct 1 - Nov.30 & March 14th - Apr 14) all campsites (electric and primitive) are only $10 (limited amenities). From Jan 5th - March 14th campsites are free at Damsite Park. However, there is no electric or water available at that time."

What you should know

Lake level fluctuations: The Corps of Engineers manages water levels at both lakes, which can affect campsite availability. Damsite Campground offers "another wonderful Corps of Engineers campground on Pomme De Terre Lake. The campsites are spacious and overlook the lake. This is such a beautiful, well maintained campground. Every campsite is level and has a picnic table and fire ring."

Tent site conditions: Some campgrounds have rocky tent pads. At Pittsburg Area Campground, a camper noted: "Cons: Lots of rocks in the tent areas. Lot of vegetation around making some bugs prominent."

Seasonal facility closures: Campground amenities vary by season. "Check in was a little confusing, and we later found out the shop is closed for the season. We've been having to head to town to purchase wood and ice which is slightly inconvenient," reported a visitor to Hermitage Area Campground.

Tips for camping with families

Playgrounds and beaches: Multiple campgrounds offer family-friendly facilities. "We stayed here over the 4th of July holiday, at the Pittsburg campground at the state park. Loop 3 campsite 317. I loved the trail to the lake! The swimming beach was amazing and the bathrooms well-kept," shares a family camper.

Less crowded weekday visits: For a quieter experience with children, Crabtree Cove offers weekday tranquility. "The campground is setup in 2 loops, non electric and electric, so if your a tent camper your not surrounded by noisy air conditioners running. Although the nicer facilities and playground are situated on the electric side," mentions a family camper.

Bike-friendly loops: Some campgrounds have ideal biking areas for children. At Hermitage Area Campground, "We stayed in spot 223 and had a nice tree on the left. Behind us was the old road which was perfect for the kids to play on and ride bikes. The lake was just past that, and the view was wonderful."

Tips from RVers

Level site selection: RVers consistently note the importance of choosing level spots. At Arrowhead Point RV Park & Cabins, "Level sites with full hookups. 30,50 amp, water, sewer on every site. Owners are really nice, and keep everything well maintained. Nice small catch and release pond."

Long-term stays: Some campgrounds accommodate extended visits with favorable amenities. "We had reserved a spot that would have been too small for our rig. Owner had already caught my mistake on check in and moved us to a better spot. Shady spots, #22 is best. Full hookups. Cheap laundry at $2.50. Nice quiet setting and the owners are very helpful," reports an RVer at Arrowhead Point.

Big rig accessibility: Not all campgrounds accommodate larger RVs. The Happy Camper by THC LLC offers specific sites for different sized vehicles. "We called ahead of time and they directed us to the site and said they would be by later to pick up payment. It's $20 a night and they have water and electricity. They offer a military discount!"
