Best RV Parks & Resorts near Sandstone, MN

Several RV parks surround Sandstone, Minnesota, offering diverse options for motorhome travelers. Grand Casino RV Resort in Hinckley provides year-round camping with full hookups including 50-amp service, though some travelers note challenges with the site layout. "The designers of this park have clearly never spent a night in an RV. Virtually every site in the park is a blind back in from the driver seat," reports one RVer. Banning RV Park and Campground in Finlayson features big-rig friendly sites with water, sewer, and electric hookups, operating from May through October. Oak Lake Campground & RV Sales in Kerrick accommodates larger rigs with full hookup sites on gravel pads. Fiddlestix RV and Golf Resort offers 143 sites with both 30-amp and 50-amp service options for those combining recreation with their RV stay.

Seasonal availability varies significantly across the region's RV campgrounds. While Grand Casino RV Resort remains open year-round, most parks like Pokegama Lake RV Park operate from May through October. Cell service can be spotty in more remote locations, with travelers reporting minimal to non-existent T-Mobile coverage at some parks. Dump stations are available at most facilities, though Minnesota National RV Park lacks this amenity. Pet owners will find most parks accommodate animals, with Banning RV Park featuring a dedicated dog park that visitors praise as "not just some small dog area" but "top of the line." Reservations are strongly recommended, particularly during summer weekends and fall color season when occupancy rates peak. Many parks offer online booking systems, with some requiring advance payment to secure popular pull-through sites.

    Grand Casino RV Resort

Park’s designers hav never been in an RV

The designers of this park have clearly never spent a night in an RV. This place pushes all of my buttons for things not to do when building an RV park.

Virtually every site in the park is a blind back in from the driver seat. You’re trying to back your trailer into a site on the right side without being able to see anything over there. Additionally, the site number pedestals for each site are right against the corner of the driveway where you have to back around them without being able to see them. Number pedestals for all sites are also right against the road, limiting the amount that you can swing your tow vehicle to the opposite side of the road to back into the site.  I will guarantee that not one person on the design team has ever backed, a travel trailer or fifth wheel into an RV site. The owners should have checked the credentials of the designers they hired. If they did, they were lied to. If they didn’t, then they just didn’t care about their customers.

Finally, one of my all-time favorites, all of the sewer connections are cut off about 12 inches above the ground. This means that even in a relatively tall fifth wheel, you are going to be trying to make shit filled water flow uphill. These things need to be cut off just an inch or two above the ground level  so that your sewage can flow downhill.

If you were here to spend an evening gambling at the casino, the place is roomy and well maintained. If you just want to spend the night, and not spend half of it trying to get into your site and set up, there’s got to be someplace close that would be better to go. We won’t be back.

    Jay Cooke State Park Campground

    Nice state park camping

We stopped here on our way to north Minnesota. Originally we planned 2 days but really needed to rest so extended it to 4 days. It was a little hairy getting to, the 2 lane winding road with the raging river on one side did slow us down a bit.  The Rangers were friendly and accommodating. The park had taken quite a beating with the winter storm that had been there the previous week, a lot of sites were closed due to trees down and snow.  While we were there they were actively cleaning up, but left in the afternoon so we had no disturbances from saws or equipment noise. The water was not turned on yet for the season, so the bathroom/showers and dump station were not available.  There was a potable water source at the front of our loop to fill our fresh tank and our water storage cubes.  The sites were shaded well, and easy to back into.  We had to work a bit to get our camper level but that may have been due to the snow and water that was on the site so we figured it was par for the course.  We walked to the Welcome Center and the swinging bridge, there were multiple hiking trails accessible by the camping area.  It was relatively busy on the weekend but cleared out during the week.  We had lots of wildlife visitors.  The park is pet friendly.  We found affordable propane and a dump site closer to Duluth.

    Jay Cooke State Park Campground

    Winter cabin camping

I love Jay Cooke year round! The tent camping is great, the park is amazing for hiking and geology study, and there are camper cabins that I have often stayed at as well. This was my first time staying in winter, the camper cabins are cozy and fully heated and really nice. People use them when coming here in winter for the terrific cross country skiing or snowshoeing. The cabins are very simple and have beds, table, heat, and electricity, but no water inside (water punps are nearby, so bring a bucket ir canteen) and no bathroom (but you can use the outhouse nearby, and the campground will have a new bath house by early summer, it is inder construction and almost finished!) . You can use the facilities at the visitor center during the day but they arent open in the evening and are a bit of a trek from the campground. But, it you want to camp in warmth and relative comfort, and want to explire this amazing state park, the camper cabins are a great way to go year round! You can reserve campsites too if you have an RV or dont mind winter camping

    Pathfinder Village-St Croix

    Tall Tall Trees

Lots of tall evergreen trees (not sure of the specific species) here that you are nestled in. Have to know a seasonal site holder to camp here. Sites can be a little tricky backing into because of the trees, but ultimately they have enough space even for large rigs(there were three of us there: 2 5th wheels and one longer travel trailer). A picnic table and fire ring was provided at each site. Nice easy road to navigate getting into the campground. Close to Hinckley if you're looking for things to do!

    Father Hennepin State Park Campground

    Great getaway from the city

Right on Lake Mille Lacs, one of Minnesota’s largest. Walking distance from the bakery and bar! Newer, updated facilities. Boat access. Lake side sites (if you book early enough). You can hit Mille Lacs State Park if you want to knock them both out on one trip! This park seems to attract a lot of long term campers, as I’m sure it’s pretty reasonable to stay at the lake all summer. We went mid-July I think and the trees were literally raining caterpillars… it was tough to want to hang out in our tree canopy-covered site. Sooo.. we ventured outside of the park more at this one.

There was a festival going on in a town west of here that had a couple rides and a really fun patio bar. If you do decide to venture out at night, ask the bartender for the limo driver’s number; he’s the city’s “uber”!

    Banning State Park Campground

    Winter camping

This is a great place for winter camping! The campsites are large enough (despite the snow) to set up suitable winter tents, and each site has a picnic table and fire pit. In the park, there's a lot of ice climbing and cross country skiing. If you take a short walk from the main parking area towards the bathroom, and follow the trail alongside the bluff, you'll find awesome spots to climb and likely a lot of dedicated adventurers. Nearby the campsite you have a great water source, and a lot of peace and quiet at night despite being close to a residential area and town.

    Moose Lake City Park

    Will come again!

We stayed in site 27 and it was perfect for our truck, 40ft fifth wheel camper, and utv trailer. Its nice that the campground allows utv/atv access. If you are double pulling with a atv/utv trailer it is very challenging to use the dump station!!

Only downfall was all the goose poop and bugs, but thats to be expected on the lake. The weekend host and his wife were very nice people!

    Grand Casino RV Resort

    Rocking RockTember Music Festival

We booked our stay at the RV Resort so we wouldn't have to drive two and a half hours back and forth during the two day Grand RockTember Music Festival. *Please note when there's an event, book early!! This RV Resort has 271 RV/Camping full hook up sites that include a picnic table and fire pit. The sites are very close together with little to no privacy, but it did a fine job as we were there for the concert. Guest Services were super friendly when we checked in, and they give you a pass card to enter & exit the Resort. There is 24 hour security, and shuttle bus service to the casino, although we enjoyed the 1/2 mile walk to the amphitheater. All the sites are back in only, and are a tight squeeze for bigger rigs. They enforced the quite hours well, and we got a good nights sleep. There's a heated outdoor pool, and small convince store in the guest services building. They have a pet walking area, and kennels if you want to spend time at the casino. The bathhouse offered private toilet stalls and showers, and we squeaky clean!!! If you like to golf, don't miss the 18 hole Grand National Golf Course next door. We enjoyed our stay, and will be back again.

    Wild River State Park Campground

    Lots to Explore/Learn

I’ll say, one of the best parts of this park is all the interpretative kiosks. Love learning about the forestry and history of state parks!  Also many options for trails which is great. A lot of wildlife here, I heard a ton of coyotes and geese, a woodpecker, and a beaver under the bridge in the evening chomping away at peeling logs... totally scared me at first but he was just doing his job and I tried not to bother him!

I stayed at the backpacking site: SPRING. It’s just a short hike (bout 400 meters)  from the river access where there is a vaulted toilet snd water year-round. The site had a bench overlooking the river and a rugged stair for water access. Also had a little personal rustic toilet just a trail behind the site. Nice and wooded campsite, soft dirt, and fairly spacious! In wet months, I bet it's pretty muddy. The only drawback is that the trail it’s situated on is the hiking club trail and heavily trafficked. I stayed in winter, where you could see through the trees and all that tho. Maybe in summer, it’s more secluded? But still, something to keep in mind.

Took a peek at the campground- some of the most spaced out and wooded sites I’ve seen yet. I like that they made it in separated loops, to avoid through traffic distracting your stay. Love the visitors center, great overlook, and interesting information. By the trail center, which is also very cozy and rents, skis and snowshoes and has a great inside fireplace, there is an interpretative walk about white pines- great for kids to imagine those huge trees! They do a great job aiding the imagination as you walk along the short trail.

Camper cabins here are up on a bluff- didn’t stay there but totes want to! Nicely situated.

Everything that I checked out here was very well managed and they clearly put a lot of time and care into making this park functional, interesting, and accessible. I loved my little backpack site but can’t wait to come back to camp in the summer or rent a cabin! The river is gorgeous, even as it was frozen in winter!

Guide to Sandstone

RV campsites around Sandstone, Minnesota range from state park alternatives to casino-adjacent luxury options. The area sits within the St. Croix River Valley at approximately 1,060 feet elevation, creating a landscape of rolling hills and mixed pine-hardwood forests. Spring and fall can bring significant temperature fluctuations, with overnight lows dropping below freezing even when daytime temperatures reach the 70s.

What to do

Explore Kettle River paddling routes: Banning State Park provides access to the Kettle River with options for whitewater paddling and rockclimbing. Banning RV Park and Campground offers proximity to these activities. "We discovered this campground while researching the area, it is fairly new and not only not reviewed on the Dyrt but not listed on it yet either. If you are planning to explore the Kettle River and Banning State Park nearby, this is a good alternative to camping within the State Park itself," notes reviewer Janet R.

Winter ice fishing: For cold weather RV camping near Sandstone, Minnesota, Hidden Bay RV Resort offers winter access for ice houses. "I'm talking winter camping on the lake on the Ice in an 'Ice Castle' catching walleye. Had a great time fishing in the camper (Ice Castle) well plowed roads, nice showers. Lots of other ice fisherman in January and February," reports Michael V.

Swimming and boating: Several campgrounds provide water recreation options. "They have golf, a pool, lake nearby, and seasonal camping," Dan B. wrote about Pokegama Lake RV Park and Golf Course. Oak Lake Campground offers lake access with boat rentals and a swimming beach, though one camper mentioned, "Spots were right by the lake and the lake was awesome."

What campers like

Spacious dog recreation areas: Beyond standard pet-friendly policies, some campgrounds provide extensive pet amenities. "The campground itself was very clean and well landscaped and maintained," wrote Janet R. about Banning RV Park and Campground, adding "in addition to playgrounds for children in different places around the campground, there was a huge dog walking and play area that was grassy and beautifully clean—and, of special interest, included a complete 'dog playground' with all the standards elements of a dog agility course!"

Golf course convenience: Minnesota National RV Park caters to golfing enthusiasts with direct access to the adjacent course. "The 27-hole golf course was in good shape and fun to play," notes MickandKarla W. Another reviewer mentioned, "This is a relatively new (2016?) campground built right next to the Minnesota National Golf Course clubhouse, and in the corner surrounded by Savannah holes 8 and 9. It's literally inside the golf course."

Well-maintained facilities: Several campers highlight the upkeep of grounds and facilities. One camper at Grand Casino RV Resort stated, "Best maintained RV resort ever! Adjacent to a large casino with hotels and restaurants. Less than two miles from I35." They were particularly impressed with maintenance response: "Best thing is that when we arrived at our spot, there was a tree that needed trimming. I mentioned it to an employee going by on a golf cart. He called someone. He said someone was on their way to take care of it right now."

What you should know

Water hookup challenges: Several RV parks in the area have unusual water connection setups. At Banning RV Park, one camper reported, "Found the sewer in the tall grass and electric, but the water supply was nowhere to be seen. We were quick to learn that water hookups were shared with other sites and required 'y' connections at the spigots." They added, "Ours source ended up being 75' plus from our RV. Thankfully I just happened to be carrying the extra hose."

Site layout considerations: When camping at RV parks near Sandstone, Minnesota, be prepared for challenging site configurations. At Grand Casino RV Resort, a reviewer noted, "Back-in site was 90 degrees to the road - if the bathhouse parking lot wasn't across from it, wouldn't have been able to swing in on a 24' travel trailer."

Seasonal limitations: Most campgrounds in the area operate from May through October, with limited winter options. Red Fox Campground and RV Park offers a central location for year-round exploration: "Close to grocery store and parks. We hit Robinson Park and Bannon State Park," reports one camper.

Tips for camping with families

Activity options: Banning RV Park provides family-friendly amenities beyond basic camping. "We were located near the campground pavilion, which included picnic tables, family bathrooms with showers, playground, activity center with craft classes etc, and laundry room," notes one visitor.

Swimming opportunities: Several campgrounds offer swimming facilities for children. At Grand Casino RV Resort, one camper reported, "The pool had a perfect temperature and nice lounging area."

ATV-friendly campgrounds: Oak Lake Campground & RV Sales provides family recreation with "boat rental and a swimming beach" according to Courtney C., who added "Playground for the kids was decent. The beach was ok." Another option is Red Fox Campground, where a camper was "apprehensive after I found out that this was a big ATV campground. But was pleasantly surprised that everyone was very respectful and it was very quiet."

Tips from RVers

Bring extra hose length: Multiple campgrounds require longer-than-standard hookup equipment. One RVer at Banning RV Park reported needing over 75 feet of water hose, while another at Minnesota National RV Park noted, "The utilities are in the back of pad in this CG, so you may need 20+ feet of electric, sewer, or water cord/hose depending on your rig's configuration."

Consider arrival timing: Some campgrounds have limited visibility after dark. At Banning RV Park, one camper noted, "Campground was very dark in the area of campsites which made setting up a bit difficult." Consider timing arrival during daylight hours.

Expect varied site conditions: Site quality and levelness vary significantly between and within campgrounds. At Minnesota National RV Park, a camper reported, "Gravel pads, some a bit out of level. All 50 amp water and sewer." Another visitor to Banning RV Park found "Our sites were grass that was a little long and rutted from what seemed from previous tenants. This made getting leveling a little difficult."
