Lebanon Hills Regional Park accepts pets at its variety of campsites, offering both RV sites with full hookups and more secluded electric-only sites tucked away in pine trees. The spacious park maintains clean facilities with showers, picnic tables, and fire rings at each site. Tent camping areas feature wooded, private sites close to restrooms and a well-maintained playground. William O'Brien State Park Campground, Afton State Park Campground, and Willow River State Park also welcome pets at their campsites, cabins, and yurts. Most parks require pets to remain on leash at all times within campground boundaries. Sites throughout the East Loop provide more seclusion and privacy than the West Loop's RV section, with site numbers 71, 82, and 84 noted for their wooded privacy.

The extensive trail system throughout Lebanon Hills provides excellent opportunities for walking dogs, with miles of hiking paths winding through the regional park. Many campgrounds connect directly to trail networks, making morning and evening pet walks convenient. Campers with pets should be aware that wildlife encounters are possible, particularly at dawn and dusk. Bathroom facilities throughout these pet-friendly campgrounds are exceptionally clean and well-maintained, with family shower rooms available at some locations. The proximity to Minneapolis-St. Paul makes these campgrounds ideal for weekend getaways with pets, while still providing a secluded outdoor experience. Lebanon Hills offers the added convenience of being just minutes from veterinary services and pet supply stores in Eagan, with the Minnesota Zoo located adjacent to the park.

      Frontenac State Park Campground

Secluded Site and Great Views Close to the Twin Cities

We did a one night camping trip for my birthday at Cart-In Site 1 the second to last weekend of September.

We loved the hiking at Frontenac State Park - walking along the lake and then walking along the bluffs at sunset was magical! Fantastic views. I imagine if we had gone two weeks later, we would have had a fantastic display of fall color. We went a little too early to catch the changing leaves.

We loved how easy Frontenac was for a casual weekend getaway. It was an easy, scenic one hour drive from St. Paul that was very enjoyable. The park was also nice with great bathrooms at the main campsite, nice trails, and they even had board games to check out at the front office for a rainy day- a great idea!

We stayed at Cart-In Site 1. I would rate the site itself a 3. It was very secluded and spacious, which was fantastic! We could not see any other campsites from our site, which was fantastic. We only occasionally saw some hikers on a nearby trail. We could hear some other noisy campers, but it wasn't too much of a disturbance. Very wooded, nice, spacious site. There is not water at the Cart-In parking lot, so be aware that you will have to fill up prior to parking and heading to your site (easiest place to do so is the main office/ visitor center).

I also slept poorly because of a nearby train that kept going past and honking at least until midnight. So if you're a light sleeper, be aware of persistent train noise at these sites!

Overall good site and an easy, fun, and relaxing weekend getaway from the twin cities.

      Lake Elmo County Park Reserve

      close to the city

I went here for our annual church picnic for years. We camped only a couple times, but it was a nice experience. Huge campground, at least much bigger than I expected! Sites are rather large and there is a decent amount of space between sites. I checked out one of the nature programs and it was very informative and enjoyable. The hiking is wonderful. This park is so unique because it’s definitely a nature experience but is so close to the suburbs and downtown St Paul.

      Lebanon Hills Regional Park

Great RV park near Minneapolis / St. Paul

Lebanon Hills is a beautiful county park only a few minutes from Minneapolis / St. Paul. We stayed three nights. Most of the sites are not shady, but there are woods and shade nearby. The park streets and sites are asphalt. The park was quiet except. The campground is part of a very large county park offering many activities and near the zoo.

Stayed in back-in campsite #13 which was not shady but level. It was an asphalt site with grass on either side. There was just than enough parking for my 34 TT and truck. The site included: picnic table on grass and fire ring. Electric and water were located in the rear. 20A/50A electric. Sewer as located in the middle and had another hookup near the front. Neighbors are close.

AT&T had 2 bars of LTE and Verizon 2 bars of LTE service. AT&T Speedtest: 2.29 Mbps down, 0.3 Mbps up. Verizon Speedtest: 180 kbps down, 6.8 Mbps up. Free WiFi: 1.5 Mbps down, 3.6 Mbps up.

      Would stay here again.

    Guide to St. Paul

St. Paul area campgrounds offer a mix of prairie, woodland, and riverside terrain across elevations ranging from 700 to 900 feet. Summer temperatures typically reach 80-90°F with high humidity, while spring and fall provide milder conditions between 50-70°F. Camping season generally runs from April through October, with most campground facilities closing in winter months due to Minnesota's heavy snowfall.

    What to do

Kayaking at Lebanon Hills: Rent single or double kayaks at the beach area to explore the small lake. "Nice little lake to kayak on," notes Chris S., who frequently visits this regional park.

Trail running at Afton State Park Campground: With varied terrain and elevation changes, Afton provides challenging running trails. "We will definitely be back for trail running!" says Emily G., who discovered the park during a day trip.

Disc golf near campgrounds: Camp at Dakotah Meadows for access to nearby courses. "Close to a top 10 disc golf course if that's your thing (it's ours)," shares Lynsey M., highlighting an activity option not found at most parks.

Wildlife viewing: Early mornings offer the best opportunities to spot native birds and animals. "There were so many different kinds of birds, and the wildflowers were blooming and ferns were unfurling - so many shades of green!" reports Karla J. B. from her spring visit to William O'Brien State Park.

    What campers like

Privacy between sites: At Baker Campground, campers appreciate the spaciousness. "The sites at Baker Park Reserve are larger than average," notes Melissa H., who visits regularly for first trips of the camping season.

Clean bathroom facilities: Most St. Paul area campgrounds maintain excellent restroom standards. "Bathroom facilities near the ranger station was very well maintained and cleaned several times a day," reports Blair about Lebanon Hills, making it suitable for families with young children.

Proximity to Twin Cities: Campers value the convenience of nearby camping options. "This is a nice, quiet campground with activities nearby," says Bryan S. about Bunker Hills Regional Park, noting that it provides a quick camping option without long drives.

Natural separation: Many sites feature trees and vegetation for privacy. "The dense sumac in July offered great natural privacy," mentions Maria D. about her stay at Willow River, highlighting how seasonal growth provides seclusion at certain times of year.

    What you should know

Reservation requirements: Most popular campgrounds book quickly, especially on weekends. "Reserve early online, most weekends were already reserved by mid May," advises Blair about Lebanon Hills Regional Park.

Seasonal bug activity: Prepare for insects, particularly in summer months. "I know that bugs are part of camping, so I don't review based on that," explains Amy G. about Rice Creek Campgrounds, suggesting campers come prepared for Minnesota's mosquitoes.

Campground construction: Check for active projects before booking. "The east part of the park was all closed for construction. Everything on the east side of the highway was closed so we could not hike a lot of the trails or use the beach," notes Tim about William O'Brien, where construction is scheduled through 2025.

Noise considerations: Some campgrounds experience road noise despite their natural settings. "Highway noise was noticeable in the evenings," reports Maria D. about her otherwise peaceful stay at Willow River State Park Campground.

    Tips for camping with families

Water activities for kids: Willow River State Park Campground offers waterfall access despite no longer having a beach. "Willow River falls is definitely a beautiful site to see... there is a great spot below the dam to cool off if needed," notes Ludwig H.

Playground access: Several campgrounds feature play areas for children. "The play area was really nice and looked brand new. Our girls loved making new friends to play with," shares Angela L. about her stay at Lebanon Hills Regional Park.

Nature centers: Visit the educational facilities at select parks. "The nature center is nice and a great place to spend some time if it is raining during their open hours," recommends Krista T. about her experience at Bunker Hills.

Wildlife encounters: Prepare children for possible animal sightings. "We saw a turtle laying eggs in a different campsite," Laura E. mentions about her stay at William O'Brien State Park Campground's Savanna loop.

    Tips from RVers

RV site selection: At William O'Brien State Park Campground, choose locations carefully. "Compared to Wild River State Park, the sites at Savannah are pretty cramped with inconsistent vegetation between sites. I wouldn't want to stay here when the loop is fully reserved," advises Dani K.

Dump station access: Note facilities available for waste disposal. "Water fill stations readily available so we loaded up prior to continuing out west," shares Lynsey M. about Town & Country Campground's amenities.

Site length accuracy: Contact campgrounds directly for specific measurements. "Reservation system is weird and the sites are much bigger than they say. All RV sites are the listed length plus 16' for your tow vehicle, which you need to call to find out," explains Davis D. from his experience at Lebanon Hills.

Dog-friendly options: Most campgrounds welcome pets with leash requirements. "We love Lebanon Hills! Close to home and an oasis in the middle of the Twin Cities. Sites with full hookups or more remote sites with electric that are more tucked away in the pines. Great hiking," says Katie C., highlighting the park's dog-friendly trails.
