Lakeport State Park Campground accommodates campers with dogs, offering full-service sites and designated pet areas throughout the 200-acre property. Pet owners must keep dogs on leashes no longer than 6 feet at all times while outside their camping units. The park provides pet waste stations along walking paths and near the pet exercise area. Ruby Campground maintains similar pet-friendly policies while offering riverside campsites where dogs can cool off in designated swimming areas. Camping options range from basic tent sites to pet-accepting cabins and glamping structures across multiple campgrounds in the area. Each campground enforces standard pet policies including proof of rabies vaccination, prompt waste cleanup, and restrictions on leaving pets unattended. Campground hosts at Port Huron KOA sell pet supplies at their market and provide free waste bags at registration.

Emmett KOA features a dedicated dog park where pets can run off-leash, with water stations and shade structures available during summer months. Most area campgrounds report good access to veterinary services in Port Huron, approximately 15 minutes from most sites. Pet-friendly hiking trails connect to several campgrounds, with some offering special pet-only paths to minimize wildlife encounters. Algonac State Park Campground accommodates pets in all camping loops but restricts certain beach areas. Nighttime regulations typically require dogs to remain quiet between 10 PM and 7 AM, with Port Huron Township RV Park enforcing particularly strict barking rules according to regular campers. Many campsites feature grassy areas ideal for pet play, though the grounds at Thousand Trails St. Clair tend to become muddy after rain.

      Pontiac Lake Recreation Area

      Private camping

Very private sites. I was surprised at how well each site was hidden from the others. Restrooms can be a bit far from some sites. Nice little dog park by the beach too.

      Clear Water Campgrounds

      Love, love, love this campground.

This is a quiet, friendly and family campground. The staff is very willing to help any way they can. The sites are level and spacious.

A great place for the kids! With a beach, playground and paved roads is nice but the frosting in this cake is the petting zoo. Animals from bunnies, peacocks & cats to horses, goats and of course Milton the burro, get it? Milton Burro, LOL

The store has stuff for the kids at very reasonable prices and the ice cream shop across the street is a nice walk after dinner. There's a light there for safe crossing, too.

Try this place, you'll add this to your good memories.

No credit or debit cards. Cash and checks only.

      Port Huron KOA

      Commercialized

If you like this type of camping then this theme park camping is for you. It's right in town with sparse trees and very small sites. Make sure to mark the max allowed occupancy to be camping because, if you don't, you will be charged extra cash for your child to spend the day with you while spending money on their amenities. They do have a little amusement park right next door so that can help entertain the young ones for a while and we did appreciate the dog park. It's not a horrible place as we did enjoy ourselves the first visit there. The campsite we had was in the back, between 2 cabins, and that one was actually a decent size. The 2nd trip was a bummer as we were reprimanded for having my girlfriends daughter show up and have breakfast with us. Which, by the way, we bought from the and she shopped in their souvenir store and purchased items. We had to pay another $5 so we could spend that extra money at their campground. Other than that, enjoy.

      Clearwater Campground

      Nice!

A fun little campground with a nice bunch of petting zoo type animals! The beach is clean and the lake is warm! Very nice layout with walking trail around the lake. The only complaint was not nearly enough trash cans around (like, none easy to find) and the bathrooms were nasty for our 2 day visit. Price per night for full hook up was $40 :-)

      Groveland Oaks County Park

SOOO much to do and what a beautiful place

We came here two years ago. My husband suggested the place because his family used to come here when he was a kid. There were many activities for everyone to do, especially for the kids. I don’t believe the cabins are pet friendly though. It’s probably the only reason we haven’t been back. We’ll definitely go back when we have a camper.

      Pontiac Lake Recreation Area

Nice sites but tons of bugs

We go here every year with friends and the staff is so nice. The spots are big and well maintained. The biggest drawback is the enormous amounts of mosquitos and ticks in the sites. Every night we had to triple check each other and our pets for ticks. We found at least 1a night on us. Last trip I came home with over 30 mosquito bites.

    Guide to Smiths Creek

Smiths Creek sits within Michigan's thumb region near Lake Huron, offering campers access to both forested areas and water recreation. Summer temperatures average 75-85°F with moderate humidity, while spring and fall camping experiences cooler temperatures ranging from 45-65°F. Most campgrounds in the area maintain standard seasonal operations from April through October, with limited winter accessibility at select locations.

    What to Do

Water activities on Lake Huron: Lakeport State Park Campground provides direct beach access where visitors can enjoy swimming or rock collecting along the shoreline. "This place is amazing! They are right on beautiful Lake Huron with sandy beaches and clean clear water," mentions Andrea W.

Hiking nearby trails: Addison Oaks County Park offers extensive trail systems for hikers and mountain bikers. "Tons of trails for hiking and biking. They have kids activities on the weekends, a lake for swimming, great playgrounds and everything is really clean," notes Wendy K.

Fishing opportunities: The Black River at P.L. Graham Park & Campground provides fishing access for campers. "We did a lil walk around the grounds and saw a few people fishing and they had some catches," shares Elaine K. This primitive campground offers a more secluded experience for anglers.

    What Campers Like

Watchable wildlife: Algonac State Park Campground offers nature observation along the St. Clair River. "We saw deer and rabbit. Our spot #18 I felt was spacious and not too close to the people next to us and trees behind us," reports one camper who enjoyed the wildlife viewing opportunities.

Freighter watching: Camping along the St. Clair River provides unique opportunities to watch large ships pass by. "If you are interested in watching freighters, bring a chair and binoculars, and sit on the beach!" recommends Stephanie C., who enjoyed this distinctive regional activity.

Rock collecting: The Lake Huron shoreline offers interesting rock hunting opportunities. "I love that it is near the water and that it has paved pads in the south part of the campground. I have found the most Petoskey stones and pudding stones," notes another camper who enjoyed this geological pastime.

    What You Should Know

Campsite selection matters: At Ruby Campground, site location can significantly impact your experience. "Small campground but just awesome staff is so friendly! We love it there!" shares Jennifer F., highlighting the importance of knowing campground layouts before booking.

Seasonal facility changes: Many campgrounds in the area have different sections open depending on the season. "The workers said that they have to upgrade the electrical system this fall on the southern side and they have closed some campsites in the south in order to help with the electricity issue," explains one camper about seasonal maintenance schedules.

Reservation requirements: Most established campgrounds require advance booking, especially during peak summer months. "My suggestion is to book six months in advance because it is extremely hard to get into this campground on the weekends," advises a regular visitor to the area.

    Tips for Camping with Families

Kid-friendly amenities: Port Huron KOA provides numerous activities for children. "Plenty of friendly staff. The site offers a lot of activities including pools, putt putt golf and play areas for the kids," mentions Joe S.

Weekend programming: Many campgrounds offer scheduled events for families. "A Boo Fest weekend. Lots of socially distanced activities for the kids and a scavenger hunt (finding clues on signs in park to solve a mystery)," explains Tim & Nancy C. about their experience at one local campground.

Beach conditions: While beaches are available, prepare for varied shoreline conditions. "The beach is rocky so don't forget to pack some water shoes but the rocky beach comes with finding cool rocks to either paint or just collect!" advises Cole G., noting both the challenges and benefits of local beaches.

    Tips from RVers

Site surface variations: Port Huron Township RV Park offers various site surfaces for different rigs. "The campground is very simple and still has all the basic features needed for your camping needs," notes Craig W.

Hookup access: Most campgrounds provide standard utilities, but availability varies by site. "Nice sites I have stayed in both area B and C. Great hiking trails easy access. Friendly staff," shares Gary E. about the consistent quality of hookups at one local campground.

Road conditions: Interior campground roads may present challenges for larger rigs. "Sooo many ruts that I was deeply concerned for the undercarriage of both my truck and camper," warns Rodger M., emphasizing the importance of researching road conditions before arrival.
