Best RV Parks & Resorts near Smiths Creek, MI

CAMPER SUMMARY PRESENTED BYFord

RV options near Smiths Creek include Dancing Fire Glamping and RV Resort featuring 140 sites with electric, water, and sewer hookups along with a pool and wifi access. Port Huron Township RV Park offers full hookup sites with 50-amp service and maintains a quiet atmosphere despite its proximity to the interstate. "The campground is very simple and still has all the basic features needed for your camping needs," according to one reviewer who visits multiple times per year. Thousand Trails St. Clair provides water hookups and accommodates RVs with reservable sites, though some visitors note bathhouse conditions vary between campground sections. Port Huron KOA rounds out the options with big-rig friendly sites, full hookups, and extensive recreational amenities.

Most RV parks in the area operate seasonally from April through October, with limited year-round options. The dump station at Lakeport State Park has an unusual configuration requiring vehicles to drive through the north campground to access it, often creating wait times during busy periods. Cell service varies significantly between providers; one visitor reported "abysmal Verizon signal" at Thousand Trails while noting T-Mobile performed much better. Many parks allow pets, though specific rules vary by location. Advance reservations are strongly recommended, especially for weekend stays during summer months when Canadian visitors frequently cross the border to camp in the area. Several parks provide on-site firewood sales, while most feature at least basic shower and restroom facilities.

McGinnis Lake Modern Campground — Holly Recreation Area

The State of Michigan has dropped the ball…

No sewer or dumps is available at this campground (April 2022). You will have to dump elsewhere. If there was a memo I missed it. Made reservation in winter 2021. Had great Verizon and ok TMobile service. Site itself was easy to level and adequate for our big rig. It was one of 4 50 amp sites in the park. Nice large grassy site and the park was not very full.

    Groveland Oaks County Park

    Kid friendly

This campground has a lake for swimming, water slide, arcade, boat rentals, mini golf, biking trails and fishing. Lots for kids to do... also skate park and 2 playgrounds. Full hookup area is away from most of the weekend traffic with a short cut to get to where all the kids stuff is located. I think it is a little pricier than most monthly rentals in southeast Michigan. We chose for the convenient location for spending the weekends. Our campsite was a little difficult to get into because it was on a curve and there was a seasonal camper with a Class A right across from our site which didn’t allow for a lot of space to maneuver our 26 ft travel trailer. It was, however, fairly close to the park and restrooms.

    Covenant Hills Camp

    Family Friendly and Quiet

Large sites, all full hookup. Plenty of onsight activities on the weekend. Large play areas, dog run, basketball court, lots of walking trails, and family friendly.

    Forester Park Campground

Friendly, but tight and odd utilities

First, some seasonal residents were extremely helpful with our campfire woes. All of the neighbors and their kids were awesome.

We chose this campground because it was close to our home and it was a short trip for our opening weekend.

The store, staff, and ice cream shop were great. We even bought t-shirts to commemorate!

The price was reasonable for 2 nights on memorial day weekend with full hookups and 30 amps ($40 a night). Water was clean a d strong. No issues with electricity.

Some issues we had that we were not expecting: The sewer and water spigot were on opposite ends of our site. I had to race to Raymond's hardware(also friendly!) in town for a 50 foot fresh water hose before they closed.

We also don't not have a slide out, but our trailer was brushed against a tall tree/bush. If we weren't against the tree, our awning may have been against the opposite neighbors' trailer.

The sewer access was slightly uphill from our site, so that caused some issues as well.

In conclusion: We'd definitely return, but we'd be careful about the site location.

    Pontiac Lake Recreation Area

    Nice Michigan State Park

Camped here opening weekend of 2022 (April 29). Nice park with several sites for our bigger rig. Leveling would be more of the challenge. But, we eventually got to 145 which was pretty good and very doable from leveling Stand point. Large well kept grassy site. Nice fire ring. No water or sewer at site but fill and dump available in park. Our Verizon WiFi coverage was good as was our TMobile. Staff was very accommodating and helpful. Seemed there to serve. We experienced no issues with our 30 amp (20 & 30 only available). Didn’t need air conditioning but electric heat was our main heat source and worked fine.

    The Holly Campground

    KOA

We normally have no issues with KOAs. It is preseason, and still early, so we understand there’s some bumps. But we had a difficult time finding a site that would work for our rig. Everything was soggy, roads washed out and our rig sank. Very few full hook up sites and none available for long term (month or more).

    Pontiac Lake Recreation Area

    Quick get away

Wonderful place for a quick get away. Park is clean. Beach is a 1.8 mile hike from the East loop in the campground but is well worth the walk. (Trail is not stroller/wagon friendly) If you are hoping to hook up to electrical, bring extension cords; some hook ups are exceptionally far away from the designated RV parking pad. Extensive mountain biking trails and the lake is open to boating, kayaking, and other water sports. Park offers lots of private sites! We stayed in site 118 and could not see neighboring sites! The site was very spacious and offered picnic table, fire ring, paved pad, and electrical hook up. (hook up in this specific site was considerably far away.)

Guide to Smiths Creek

Located in St. Clair County, Smiths Creek offers access to the coastal plain of Lake Huron with elevations averaging 650 feet above sea level. The area experiences continental climate patterns with warm summers reaching 80°F and cold winters dropping to 15°F. Most rv sites near Smiths Creek, Michigan have sandier soil conditions requiring sturdy tent stakes or alternative anchoring methods.

What to do

Beach swimming and water activities: Directly across from Jellystone Park North Port Huron, visitors can access Lake Huron for swimming. "This place was really cool especially for families because it has a huge camp store, an ice cream place, and tons of amenities. You can rent golf carts, little paddle boats, and more," reports Kelsey P. The campground itself features "a very nice kid friendly pool" according to Barb L.

Mini-golf and recreational games: Port Huron KOA offers putt-putt golf and organized activities. "There is a movie theater, old one room schoolhouse, camp store, pools, number boats and putt putt," notes Melissa B. Equipment condition varies by campground, with some visitors reporting "the mini gold course was torn up in several places" at Jellystone late in the season.

River paddling: Located along the Black River, P.L. Graham Park & Campground offers water access for canoes and kayaks. "Nice place to bring a kayak & canoe. Worn in dock area but still accessible," mentions Valerie D. The park maintains a canoe launch with direct river access for paddlers.

What campers like

Wooded campsites for natural shade: Holly Recreation Area provides heavily forested sites rather than open fields. "Actually feels like camping with all the trees, not lined up in a farmer's field," writes Zachary S. Visitors appreciate that some campgrounds offer "several semi-private sites screened from neighbors by trees," as Jennifer H. observed at Holly.

Quiet atmosphere at smaller parks: Lexington Park Campground provides a more peaceful alternative to larger state parks in the region. "The park is quieter, and the campsites are under tall pines instead of out in an open field," notes Janet R., who found it "a happy alternative" to busier nearby campgrounds.

Clean facilities: Campground cleanliness ranks high in visitor priorities. At Holly Recreation Area, "The bathrooms and showers were clean, there were a lot of activities for the whole family, and the camp site was nice and shaded," writes BrianaLynn R. Similarly, at Lexington Park, visitors consistently mention "full immaculate restrooms and showers."

What you should know

Seasonal availability limitations: Most campgrounds in the region operate between April and October. Washakie Golf & RV Resort specifically lists their season as "May 1 - Oct 31," while Holly Recreation Area remains one of the few options open year-round. Cell coverage also varies significantly by carrier and location.

Site spacing concerns: At busier campgrounds, proximity between sites can impact the camping experience. At Port Huron Township RV Park, Craig W. notes "the campground is very simple and still has all the basic features needed for your camping needs." This straightforward approach works well for some campers.

Fire pit configurations: Fire pit designs vary between parks. At Port Huron Township RV Park, Terri W. advises: "Heads up, this campground does not have permanent fire rings. You will either need to bring your own pit, or rent one from the front office." Other campgrounds feature standard in-ground fire rings or constructed fire pits.

Tips for camping with families

Pool amenities: For families seeking water recreation beyond the lake, several campgrounds offer pool facilities. At Dancing Fire Glamping and RV Resort, Nathan H. found "nice pool, showers and sitewide wifi," noting the facilities were "clean" despite feeling the price was "high for a tent."

Activities for children: Planned activities keep younger campers engaged. At Jellystone Park, Kelly L. reports, "This campground has SO much to do that you will never hear your kids say those dreaded words... I am bored! The are round the clock activities, pool with kid area, water slides, obstacle course, GaGa pit, playground, jumped and so much more!"

Playground access: Many campgrounds feature playground equipment. Holly Recreation Area includes "several playgrounds, bench swings, play fields and even a basketball court," according to Jennifer H. Lexington Park offers a "great playground for the kids" with the added benefit of being "within walking distance to the water."

Tips from RVers

Site selection strategy: At Port Huron KOA, site location significantly impacts the camping experience. Alex H. recommends specific sites: "If you're in a camper I'd recommend sites 54,179,180. Those sites have a bit of a backyard to them and more space."

Internet connectivity concerns: Digital accessibility varies widely between campgrounds and service providers. At Port Huron KOA, Joe S. reports "WiFi is slow but stable. You probably won't be able to watch Netflix. AT&T service is terrible. Our friends have T-Mobile and it is very fast for them."

Electrical service variations: Many rv sites near Smiths Creek offer varying levels of electrical service. Port Huron Township RV Park provides full hookup sites with 50-amp service, while Lexington Park offers "electric or electric and water hookups" according to Janet R., who primarily tent camped but noted the RV options.
