What to do
Fishing at multiple depths: Kentucky Dam Village State Resort Park offers fishing access where anglers can target different species based on water depth. "We camped here with our pups to see the eclipse in Paducah. The area is not really pretty or scenic. You can walk to the dam from the campground but it's nothing super special to see."
Mountain biking on established trails: Hillman Ferry Campground connects to premier trail systems. "A premier and amazing mountain bike trail system is accessible directly from campground!! The Canal Loop Trail and North South Trails are well known and revered by area mountain bikers and hikers."
Paddling in protected inlets: Eureka offers protected waters for paddlesports. "I had fun paddle boarding with the little dog in the inlet right off this campsite. This is a large campground with lots of activities, but I didn't do any. We stayed right at the campsite."
Wildlife viewing opportunities: Visit the nearby wildlife areas from your campsite. "Make sure to visit the Nature Center and Elk and Bison Prairie. Canoeing on Energy Lake, we spotted bald eagle and beaver dens among other wildlife."
Stargazing in low-light areas: Pisgah Bay - DFWR offers darker skies away from developed areas. "I went in March and had the whole place to myself. Only coyotes and owls at night. Very peaceful. It was clean and had an odor free vault toilet!"
What campers like
Waterfront site selection: Canal Campground- Lake Barkley COE offers multiple waterfront options. "The campground is in the shape of a peninsula so there are many campsites with water views and access. The bathrooms and showers are very clean and the road in is very nice."
Spacious sites with privacy: Kentucky Dam Village offers well-spaced campsites. "Campground is beautiful with lots of room in between sites. Mostly shaded with big trees. Clean Bath House at the main entrance. Bath House #2 was locked for our stay."
Cleanliness of facilities: Consistent maintenance across campgrounds is appreciated. "The bathhouse was pretty ok. It was cleaned daily and always stocked. The water pressure was very low. Our camp host was super awesome and nice."
Natural wooded settings: Many campers appreciate the tree cover at multiple sites. "Our site 64 was a bit difficult to back into but very level once you get in. I think it has some of the best views in the campground."
Fireflies in summer months: Seasonal natural displays enhance camping experiences. "We were there in late June and the fireflies lit up the woods like twinkling Christmas lights, it was magical!"
What you should know
Cell service variability: Different campgrounds have dramatically different connectivity. "The cell reception is great - I got download speeds of 18-34 Mbps. Also, several OTA TV channels. These sites are all situated in the woods near the water so none are particularly good for solar."
Hookup limitations: Nickell Branch Campground and other primitive sites have specific constraints. "Basic campground. No water or electric. One vault toilet. Probably 15 true sites but several grassy areas that tents and hammocks can use."
Road conditions vary significantly: Access to some sites requires planning. "Road leading into the camp does have a few dips here and there one needs to be aware of. I was able to get a 36' pull behind camper back here without four wheel drive but wouldn't try that during the raining season or if the road was wet."
Reservation challenges: Popular sites book quickly during peak seasons. "Having watched this campground for days as we traveled west from WV, we saw empty sites daily that said first come, first served. We couldn't book them because they are booked as campers arrive at the last minute."
Highway noise at some locations: Proximity to interstates affects some campgrounds. "Close to roads so there is lots of road noise. Clean. Very super friendly helpful staff."
Tips for camping with families
Playground proximity matters: Paducah-Kentucky Lake KOA offers family-friendly amenities. "My kids also enjoyed the pool. Solid place to overnight! Our site was a bit hilly but we had a nice view of the lake and close proximity to the playground."
Consider biking opportunities: Multiple campgrounds support family cycling. "A wonderful campground with extremely welcoming and helpful staff from the minute we pulled up. Fellow campers were pleasant (no rowdy groups). So much to do in the LBL Rec. area. Next time we'll bring our bikes and archery equipment to try out the range on-site at Hillman Ferry."
Schedule for organized activities: Seasonal programming enhances family experiences. "We stayed at the Hillman Ferry Campground. We booked online but once we arrived, the attendant suggested we change sites. There are 2 playgrounds, multiple bath houses and a cute little store that you can walk/bike to."
Pack for swimming: Multiple water access points for children exist. "There is a small designated swimming area is convenient but the water was so high that there wasnt any sand. The bathrooms and showers are ok."
Consider golf cart rentals: Some campgrounds are designed for internal transportation. "Not the best place if you like tents and nature. It's a well maintained campground with a private beach, a shower house, washing machines, and a playground. There are golf carts everywhere!"
Tips from RVers
Extension cord requirements: Fern Lake Campground and other sites have specific electrical needs. "Sites on outer perimeter have water and electric, just bring enough hose and cords to hook up... they are on shared pedestals..."
Site angle challenges: Backing into some sites requires technique. "The sites are very small but spread out. Our 35 ft class a barely fit. They do show length limits for sites and they definitely max limit. There is electric (30 amp) and water at the site but it was 75 ft from my sites. Extensions are needed."
Dump station locations: Plan for sanitation needs. "To dump you have to go all the way around and back towards the campsites. You pull back out to the entrance from there. The access road to the site is very winding and somewhat narrow for a large rig."
Leveling requirements: Many sites need additional equipment. "Typical COE great job. Spacious, with mature trees. Pretty level sites, but will still need blocks. Some, on the water full sun & others partial shade."
Seasonal site booking strategies: Some campgrounds have high permanent resident ratios. "Mostly seasonal and permanent with a few spots for weekly and overnight. All sites are level, gravel with concrete patios and fire rings. The staff makes you feel like a friend immediately."
