Spring Park offers primitive tent and RV camping with pet-friendly sites along the Cedar River. The park features two nature trails where leashed dogs can accompany their owners, along with a constant flowing spring within the park grounds. Cedar Bridge County Park and Halvorson Park both provide pet-friendly campsites with electric hookups, clean shower facilities, and picnic tables at most sites. Riverside County Park stands out with 40 full hookup sites that welcome pets, featuring spacious sites along the Little Cedar River. The recently renovated campground includes a natural-themed kids play area and walking trails where leashed pets are permitted. Campgrounds maintain a clean environment with regular trash collection to ensure safe experiences for pets and their owners.

Shellrock River County Preserve provides free camping with a 3-day maximum stay where pets are welcome in a large grassy field surrounded by walnut trees. The preserve features a gravel track along the river ideal for walking dogs, though bug spray is recommended due to the wooded environment. Lake Hendricks County Park offers pet-friendly camping on a man-made lake with paved sites suitable for both tents and RVs. The upper level sites provide more wooded surroundings with some overlooking the lake. Camp at the Woods provides year-round camping with concrete pads and fire rings at pet-friendly sites, plus river access for supervised water activities with pets. Most campgrounds in the Osage area enforce leash policies and require owners to clean up after their pets while using designated pet waste disposal areas.

      Wilder City Park

      Beautiful city park

Wilder Park is a beautiful city park. Very much a gem, quiet and peaceful . 50 + sites with about half of them full hook up. Costs for a full hook up in 2022 was under $25 a night. The park has two fishing areas, a dog park, pickle ball, volleyball mini golf, basketball and two playgrounds. A beautiful walking and bike path connects the parks to the neighboring cities. A free dump is also available. We highly recommend this park. 1

      Maple Springs Campground

      Eden

We stayed here for the month of august, and this place is awesome! Beautiful spaces of various size, a river runs next to it and they have duck races. Dog park, small general store, backs up to a national park, close to town, immaculately maintained, volley ball court, lots of shade trees, easy access, and Andy(owner/operator) is the nicest person you’ll ever want to meet. For those so inclined there’s church service on Sunday in an old (cool looking!) barn! Fire pits at every spot. There is WiFi there, but little to no phone service unless you have a cell booster. 5/5 will definitely be back!

      Crystal Springs RV Resort

      Nice Campground

As the campground(CG) is right off the interstate, it was easy to get to. Our check-in package was ready when we arrived at the little self-registration building at the entrance. We had requested site 40, where we had stayed two years ago, but they gave us back-in site 41 instead on the little lake. The utilities are in the middle of the site and worked well with water pressure near 45 psi. The sites are decently spaced for this type of CG. They have WiFi, but their info packet states it's not good enough for streaming but okay for email, etc. We got 3 bars on Verizon and used our MiFi since we were only here for two nights. The CG is right off I-35, so you do get some highway noise. This CG is very well kept, with mostly seasonal and permanent parties. We came in with two other 5th wheels and had no problem getting sites, but we did reserve well before our arrival. There was not a formal dog park, but there was plenty of area to walk your dog. We noted that this CG was featured in RV Life’s 2023 Discover The Best RV Parks& Resorts In Every State with this narrative:"This family-owned campground prides itself on cleanliness; there is an owner on-site around the clock to ensure it stays in top condition. The park is beautifully landscaped and has both pull-thru and back-in sites. All sites(some are waterfront) are level and offer full hookups and free Wi-Fi. There are onsite restrooms and laundry facilities that are kept sparkling clean. They also offer a lending library of books and movies. There is a large pond on the property that is perfect for fishing, kayaking, and other water sports, and there is a walking path that circles the pond." Check out the Spam Museum in Austin, MN. We thought the museum would be cheesy, but it was a nice facility and a great experience. The CG deserved this praise, and we again enjoyed our stay.

      Beed's Lake State Park Campground

      Camping by a beautiful lake

Beeds Lake campground offers an opportunity to camp by a picturesque lake with a beautiful waterfall.

There are many campsites to choose from. My only negative point for Beeds Lake is that the campground is very "campgroundy". Many of the RV sites are very close together, which is the norm in Iowa. However, there are a few on the outskirts that have a little more privacy.

      Things to do:

      • Nice trails to hike or bike
      • Beautiful small lake, great for kayaking and fishing
      • Paddle boat rental available
      • Man-made waterfall
      • Fishing (lake and beneath the waterfall)
      • Enjoy the nearby town of Hampton

Vernon Springs Turkey River County Park

Nice new campground with great local activities

This campground is a county campground that looks pretty new or recently upgraded. It is on the outskirts of town by a mile or two. There is nice walking and biking trails on the property and the river is close by. A nature center is on the property. There is a boat launch available near for putting your yak or canoe in. This is seasonally open.

      Eldred Sherwood Park

      Hidden gem (in a cornfield)

This is about as "middle of nowhere" as you can get in Iowa 🙂! The campground offers both electric RV sites and primitive sites (with an accompanying bathhouse ~500 feet away)

The park offers a couple nice walking paths both forested and prairie. The lake is small, but I'm told has some good fishing.

      Otranto Co Park

      Highly recommended family spot

Right off county road and next to the river. The bathrooms and shower facilities are very basic, but the showers are nice and warm. There is a great playground area and a horseshoe pit play area. There is a public access point to the river, adjacent to the park. Lots of big shade trees throughout the camp sites, perfect for hammocks. The spot is very quiet, according to all of our kids. There are electric camp sights camps available. Prices are very reasonable. If you like to wake up and walk a few steps to fish, canoe, paddle board or swim, then this park is a dream come true.

Big Island Campground — Myre-Big Island State Park

Being outside is better than being on the couch

Met up with friends to get outside. They brought their dogs and we had a grand time. Windy weather kept us off the lake - there are canoes and kayaks for rent at the state park - but we took several walks around the island. We visited a nearby winery and we went geocaching around the area. Our friends’ site backed up to ours. A group of retirees in RVs were camped on three sides of us, and they spent the weekend hanging out together. One guy shared the PB rice krispie bars he made. They had clean bathrooms with showers. There was an outdoor dishwashing station, convenient for disposing of our washbasin full of gray water.

White Fox Campground — Myre-Big Island State Park

      Newer Facilities, neat landscape

We stayed on the mainland campground White Fox in site #78, bordered on 3 sides by trees and shrubs for privacy. The bathroom/ shower facilities were very recently done. This park is unique as you can drive across a causeway and get on the Big Island which has more trails and another campground. We were here in May and the bugs were awful (I get it, they're part of being out in nature). At one point I just had to yell "RUN" at my partner as I fled with our dog because the may flies were swarming so thickly that it was all you could hear and see. Great park with lots of history, check it out and enjoy.

    Guide to Osage

Camping options near Osage, Iowa center around several small lakes and rivers in this prairie region of northern Iowa. The area sits at approximately 1,170 feet above sea level in Mitchell County, characterized by gently rolling terrain with wooded river valleys. Summer temperatures typically range from 75-85°F with higher humidity levels, making riverside camping locations particularly popular during peak season from May through September.

    What to do

River fishing access: Riverside Co Park provides fishing opportunities above and below the dam on the Little Cedar River. "Fishing above and below the dam. Picnic table and fire ring at every site," notes camper Paul H., who also mentions the 40-site campground was "totally renovated 2 years ago nestled along the little Cedar river."

Swimming options: Several campgrounds offer water access for cooling off during summer months. "There is a nice lake near with play equipment located at the lake and at the campground," shares Nichole M. about Rudd Eastside Park, adding they've camped there "4-5 times already this year" because of its family-friendly amenities.

Hiking trails: Mitchell County features several natural walking paths along waterways. Bradley B. mentions that at the upper level of Lake Hendricks Co Park, sites are "a bit more wooded with a few sites overlooking the lake." The park provides access to walking paths around this man-made lake, with both open and shaded sections.

    What campers like

Affordable pricing: The area's campgrounds offer economical options for overnight stays. Tim M. notes that Cedar Bridge County Park provides "about 20 self-serve sites with electric and water" that are "cheap at $20 a night." He adds, "We showed up at 8:00 on a Friday evening and spots were available!"

Spacious sites: Campers frequently mention the generous sizing of campsites in the region. Tracy B. describes Camp At The Woods as having "perfect size sites and near the river for some water fun" and mentions that while "pool wasn't open yet" during their visit, it "looked to be a good size."

Clean facilities: Well-maintained bathhouses are consistently highlighted in reviews. Kris E. appreciates that Halvorson Park has "nice bathrooms and showers dump station" and mentions the "nice walking trail a couple miles away on the river by Mitchell that we enjoyed."

    What you should know

Seasonal considerations: Many campgrounds operate with limited schedules. Jason H. visited Interstate Co Park midweek and found "it was empty. It's on a lovely river with swimming. Mostly people here for day use putting boats in." He also noted, "They don't take reservations."

Insect preparation: The wooded riverside environments can have significant mosquito populations during summer months. Ax H. warns about Shellrock River Co Preserve: "Trees everywhere so bring bug spray. Quiet, peaceful. Not private but worth it. Free, 3 day max stay."

Water levels: River conditions vary throughout the season, affecting activities. Kris E. cautions about Halvorson Park: "Don't try to tube down the river at the end of July—too slow." However, they noted "many people swimming off their boat/pontoons as the bottom is sandy and the current is very very slow."

    Tips for camping with families

Playground access: Several campgrounds feature dedicated play areas for children. Paul H. highlights that Riverside Co Park includes a "natural themed kids play area including a huge tree house" along with "walking trails with primitive camping across the road."

Communal amenities: Some parks offer additional recreational options beyond standard campground facilities. "The campground has old bikes for the kids to use, everyone there is so nice!" shares Nichole M. about Rudd Eastside Park, emphasizing their positive experience tent camping with children.

Pet-friendly considerations: Most campgrounds near Osage welcome pets but require them to remain leashed. Dean A. mentions that at Woody's Campground by the Lake, there's a "short walk to the lake and playgrounds" with "bar and grill 1/4 mile away," providing convenient amenities for families with both children and pets.

    Tips from RVers

Hookup locations: Pay attention to the placement of utilities at some sites. Jeremiah B. notes about Camp At The Woods: "We had full hook up, but the sewer connection was at the front of the site and was up hill kind of. Nice concrete pads at the site with fire rings."

Year-round accessibility: Several campgrounds remain open through winter months. Corey shares that Camp At The Woods staff were "very accommodating super nice people helped us back in and set up in middle of winter after dark" and "the water worked when temp was below freezing."

Site selection: For pet-friendly camping near Osage, Iowa, consider the terrain of available sites. Bradley B. explains that Lake Hendricks Co Park features "2 levels, the upper being a bit more wooded with a few sites overlooking the lake" and while it's primarily an RV park, it "worked with a tent" during their stay.
