What to do
Hiking trails: Several miles of trails wind through Myre-Big Island State Park near the Iowa border, offering wildlife viewing opportunities. "There are 20+ miles of hiking trails through prairies, woodlands, and along the lake too! Plus the park offers geocashing (and free GPS rental)," notes Michael C.
Kayaking and canoeing: Launch from designated water access points at local lakes for water recreation. "We dropped our kayak into the lake at the boat launch, which was a 2 minute drive to the other side of the island from the campsite. The lake was great, and calm," reports Gene Z.
Fishing: Multiple lakes in the region provide fishing opportunities year-round. At Clear Lake State Park Campground, campers mention the excellent fishing. "Close to the beach, town and the lake has great fish," writes Lisa M.
What campers like
Shade coverage: Many campers appreciate the tree coverage at established campgrounds during summer heat. At MacNider Campground, "This Campground sits among a sleepy country city… however with the trees and the setting, you would never know," says Tim Z.
Wildlife viewing: Local wildlife management areas and state parks offer chances to observe native species. "We got to see turtles laying eggs and deer were all around. Family loved the fishing," notes Lisa P. at Pilot Knob State Park.
Clean facilities: Several campgrounds maintain well-kept bathrooms and shower facilities. In White Fox — Myre-Big Island State Park, "Beautiful, clean, and recently updated bathrooms and showers!" according to Michael C.
What you should know
Seasonal considerations: Many campgrounds operate seasonally with limited winter services. At Oakwood RV Park, season runs "Apr 15 - Oct 15" with full hookups available during this period.
Site spacing: Campground density varies significantly across the region. "Not super spacious but very comfortable distance between spaces. Well maintained dirt road in campground. Grassy and mowed. Nice big trees!" reports Shari M.
Reservations: Some parks fill quickly during summer months. "Sad that there were so many back up sites over the holiday weekend, would have liked to have been able to camp here. It being full more than a week before the holiday, shows how great it is," explains Jennifer D. about Clear Lake State Park.
Tips for camping with families
Playground access: Several campgrounds feature play areas for children. "This is our second time camping at the Clear Lake State Park. The park is clean, the shower house is nice. The playground was fun for the kids, nice beach access!" shares Becky M.
Swimming options: Lakes and designated swimming areas provide water recreation for families. "There is a large station for cleaning fish and a huge picnic area with wide open space and a nice playground. There is a beach for swimming but there is no lifeguard on duty," notes Matt S.
Pet exercise routes: Three Fingers Campground & RV Park offers pet-friendly camping with adequate space for walking dogs. "This is primarily a long-term RV site with a few transient sites. People are friendly, bathrooms and showers are well-maintained," reports Beverly W.
Tips from RVers
Hookup availability: Electric sites are more common than full hookups in the region. "There are only 6 full hook up sites and the care taker made sure we got one. The rest of the sites are beautiful with electric hook up," explains Lai La L.
Site leveling: Some campgrounds have uneven sites requiring preparation. "Sites not too level, but spacious. Camped in mid April and park was not very busy which was nice. Full hook up sites and W/E only sites," advises Victoria G.
Access roads: Interior roads at some campgrounds may present challenges. "The interior roads are dirt roads with a few potholes they are very narrow. The camping sites are nice sized and relatively private," warns Cheryl W.
