    SUMMARY PRESENTED BYT-Mobile

Cherry Log, Georgia serves as a gateway to camping in the southern Appalachians, with campgrounds ranging from RV sites with electric hookups to free primitive tent camping at dispersed locations. Campgrounds like Fort Mountain State Park, Amicalola Falls State Park, and Vogel State Park offer established camping with amenities including electric hookups and shower facilities. The area accommodates diverse camping styles with options for tent camping, RV sites with hookups, cabins, and even glamping experiences at select locations. Toccoa River Sandy Bottoms Recreation Area provides riverside camping for those seeking water proximity, while dispersed camping can be found at locations like Three Forks Campground.

Access to campgrounds varies seasonally, with some facilities operating year-round while others like Morganton Point Campground have limited seasons (April through November). Primitive sites at locations such as Three Forks Campground offer free camping with minimal amenities, while state parks require reservations and provide more developed facilities. "We got to camp out on the spot right on the river and listened to the water trickling all night long," noted one visitor about the Toccoa River area. Road conditions can be challenging, especially after rain events, with several locations requiring vehicles with adequate ground clearance. Cell service is inconsistent throughout the region, particularly in valley areas and remote campsites.

Riverside camping represents a significant draw in the Cherry Log area, with multiple sites offering direct water access. The Toccoa River and other waterways provide opportunities for fishing, with several reviewers mentioning excellent trout fishing as a highlight. A recent review emphasized that "they had just stocked the river with trout and we caught a total of 32 fish divided among our group." Campers seeking solitude should consider visiting during weekdays or shoulder seasons, as popular waterfront sites fill quickly during summer months. While most campgrounds maintain well-kept facilities, visitors should be prepared for variable conditions depending on recent weather and seasonal maintenance schedules. Family-friendly sites with swimming areas can be found throughout the region, offering recreational opportunities beyond just camping.

      Fort Mountain State Park Campground

      Love this place

Beautiful views from the trails. I went during the summer in July so it was on the busier side. There is a lake with a beach with boat and paddle board rentals. Seemed like a great spot to fish. Prepare for possibilities of bears as they were around. One night I must have not fully secured my bear box and a bear found my cooler. I tent camped on a pad where I can find some service (T-Mobile) but most spots are spotty. Next time I come, I want to try the back country locations. Trails are awesome with a cool story about the place around the tower and fortification. Attendants at the camp store were really nice. If groceries are needed there is grocery stores in the nearest town of Chatsworth down the mountain

Deep Hole Recreation Area — Chattahoochee Oconee National Forest

      Peaceful Creekside Camping

      Our campsite: #9

⛺️ First site on the left. It’s a shaded, pull-through site, and I believe it’s the most private site in the campground. Only about half the sites were occupied during our visit, and it was incredibly peaceful and quiet.

⛺️ Very level and stayed dry with no puddling during our visit.

⛺️ The creek can be seen from the picnic table, and listening to the water was so relaxing. We even spotted a pileated woodpecker and a couple of herons across the creek.

⛺️ Direct creek access—it’s steep, but doable!

⛺️ The fire ring had quite a bit of ash left in it, although we didn’t need to use it.

⛺️ Farthest site from the fishing area and kayak launch, but it’s still an easy, short walk!

⛺️ Close to the restrooms, but we didn’t notice any unpleasant smells from our site or elsewhere in the campground.

⛺️ Trash cans are located along the way to the fishing area.

      Kayak Ramp & Fishing Area:

🛶 Concrete ramp makes creek access easy. It was muddy and slightly slippery during our visit, so watch your step!

🥾 The creek was cold and refreshing in August. Wear water shoes for grip on the smooth stones—and protection from any lost fishing hooks hiding on the creek bottom. Ouch!

🎣 The fishing area is next to the kayak ramp and has two wooden benches.

🦦 We saw an otter playing along the creek while we were fishing!

      Restrooms:

🚽 Bring a lantern or flashlight—even during the daytime, it’s DARK inside!

🚽 There are hooks to hang your lantern or bag.

🚽 No running water at the campground, so bring soap and water for washing your hands at your campsite.

🛒 Cooper’s Creek Store is nearby and worth a stop! Firewood, ice, bait, snacks, souvenirs, Wi-Fi, food, and plenty of fishing/camping essentials you may have forgotten.

🌲 If you’re looking for a quiet, shaded creekside site with privacy and easy water access, Site #9 is an excellent pick.

Nantahala National Forest Jackrabbit Mountain Recreation Area

      Lovely

I haven’t finished my stay but so far so good… It has all the basics that are needed. Toilet, shower, drinking water… The noise is minimal and what should be expected at a campground. The staff are very attentive. A storm rolled through and they were through right as it was over to make sure everyone was alright.

      Big Creek Primitive Camping Area

      Nice, secluded spot

Nice spot next to a cool little creek. There was a good bit of trash in several of the fire rings, and found human waste and toilet paper about 5 feet from the waterline between a camp and the water, that was pretty disappointing. Leave no trace!! This includes hiking away from camp to bury your business. We still really enjoyed our stay. The road in was a little rougher than onX off-road let on, but had no issues getting in with my 4x4. Lots of wildlife, we even saw a bear a few minutes from camp.

      KOA Georgia Hiawassee

      Hiawassee KOA-Surrounded by Mountains!

This KOA is a really nice CG. It’s nestled in a valley and surrounded by by mountains. Full service with a nice pool, camp store, clean bath houses/restrooms and lots to do for kids . Our site was along the creek. Very peaceful and loved hearing the water. Lots of mixed use, long term RV’s, cabin rentals and tent sites. The CG was s very large and most sites are close to one another, not much privacy but that’s what State Park CG’s are for. The staff is very friendly and helpful. Great WiFi here, very solid signal during our visit.

    Guide to Cherry Log

Cherry Log, Georgia provides access to several campground options in the Chattahoochee-Oconee National Forest region. Camping facilities range from established state parks such as Fort Mountain and Amicalola Falls to more rustic options along rivers and in wildlife management areas. The area accommodates tent camping, RV sites with hookups, cabin rentals, and some glamping opportunities. Most developed campgrounds like Doll Mountain and Diamond Lure offer amenities including drinking water, electric hookups, and toilet facilities within 20-30 miles of Cherry Log.

Road conditions vary significantly when accessing more remote camping areas near Cherry Log, with some requiring higher clearance vehicles. Forest service roads lead to several primitive sites where campers can enjoy greater solitude. "4x4 is not required, but ground clearance makes it non-accessible to some," noted one visitor about Mountain Side Overlook at Rich Mountain Wildlife Management Area. Seasonal considerations affect campsite availability, with many campgrounds like Morganton Point operating from spring through fall (April to November). Winter camping options are more limited but available at year-round facilities such as Amicalola Falls and Vogel State Park. Cell service is inconsistent throughout the region, particularly in lower elevation areas along rivers.

Riverside camping represents a significant draw in the Cherry Log vicinity, with multiple sites providing access to water features. The Toccoa River and nearby streams offer popular fishing and swimming opportunities, particularly at Sandy Bottoms Recreation Area. A review mentioned that "we caught a total of 32 fish divided among our group" during a visit after the river had been stocked with trout. Campers frequently highlight hiking trail access as another benefit, with the Appalachian Trail and Benton McKay Trail accessible from several camping areas. Crowds tend to concentrate at waterfront sites during summer months, while dispersed camping areas provide more solitude. Several campgrounds feature both primitive sites and improved areas with RV hookups, allowing for different camping styles within the same general vicinity.
