Camping options near Merritt Island include several waterfront sites along the Indian River with views of Kennedy Space Center. Winter temperatures average 60-75°F, while summer months bring high humidity and afternoon thunderstorms from June through September. Rocket launches frequently occur throughout the year and can affect campground availability.
What to do
Rocket launch viewing: From Jetty Park Campground, campers witness rocket launches across the water. "Perfect for space or ship enthusiasts... staying out on the inlet gives front row seats to the ships coming to port as well as any launches from cape Canaveral which are much more frequent now," notes Jesse P.
Beach access: At Jetty Park, the beach is within walking distance. "Walk to the beach! Clean with shade. WiFi, water, electric and sewer hookup as well as tent sites and cabins," says Peggie F. Many visitors appreciate easy beach access: "Great location, good sites. Easy access to restaurants/bars. Good beach biking, fishing, watching the cruise ships come and go."
Mountain biking and hiking: Wickham Park Campground offers extensive trail systems. "It's a great place with lots of bike/walking paths and wide open, quiet spaces. Hope to take advantage of the fishing ponds, mountain bike trails and archery range in future visits," reports Jeff F. The park maintains multiple recreation areas within a 30-minute drive of Merritt Island.
What campers like
Waterfront camping: Long Point Park Campground provides direct water access. "You tie your boat up at your campsite. Great for kayaking, fishing and paddle boarding," explains Suzie F. The campground features waterfront sites where "We pulled our kayaks/paddleboards in and out of the water right at our site."
Military base amenities: Manatee Cove Family Campground offers facilities for eligible military personnel. "Patrick AFB has a large PX/Commissary as well as a bowling alley, swimming pool, Class VI store, and you can eat at the DFAC. Love the sound of reveille and taps as well as the sound of freedom as the C-130's and helicopters come in and out on the nearby runway," describes Paula C.
Fishing opportunities: Multiple campgrounds provide fishing access, with structures built specifically for anglers. "There's a nice pavilion overlooking the water inside the eastern loop. There's a pier for fishing and just serene eastern observation toward Cape Canaveral. There's a kayak launch ramp as well," notes L O. from Manatee Hammock Park.
What you should know
Reservation timing: During winter months and launch events, campgrounds fill quickly. At Space Coast RV Resort, reviewers note: "Very few sites for Thousand Trails Members. Very close to Cocoa Beach!" Many campgrounds operate first-come, first-served policies except for active military personnel.
Site spacing: Some campgrounds have limited space between sites. "The sites are nice by the ponds. Good spacing between them and clean looking. The back sites (sect C) had rigs that have been there a while," observes Mimi B. about Wickham Park Campground.
Noise considerations: Transportation noise affects some dog friendly campgrounds near Merritt Island. "The only downside of the campground is its proximity to railroad tracks and airport. The noise seemed to be constant on weekdays," reports L O. At Manatee Cove on Patrick AFB, "Be prepared for aircraft activity such as C-130's and helicopters coming in and out, as the FamCamp is near the end of one of the runways."
Tips for camping with families
Community activities: Many dog-friendly RV parks near Merritt Island schedule regular social events. "We love camping here! It's very close to shops but it doesn't feel like it when you're in the campground. Close to beaches. Lots of trails to walk or mountain bike. We're full timers so we took advantage of the community garden here for a season. Disc golf, food trucks, farmers market, playground the list goes on!" shares Mikella about Wickham Park.
Beach camping with kids: For families with children who enjoy ocean activities, Jetty Park Campground provides convenient beach access. "For the past 3 years we have been going to the campground every year around August and have an amazing time! Each year it's something we look forward to all year, and it never disappoints! Sites can feel a little close but for the price and how close the beach is you seriously can't beat it!" enthuses Kristina C.
Boating with families: Some campgrounds accommodate boat storage directly at campsites. "This small campground was very full in middle of Florida winter season. While most sites appeared flat, there is not privacy between them and no shade in hot Florida sunshine. The only sites with open water views were in very tight and crowded section that was crowded with lots of big rigs," notes Terry S. about Long Point Park Campground.
Tips from RVers
Site selection: At dog-friendly campgrounds near Merritt Island, RV site types vary significantly. "They have narrow spots but great landscaping. There are some permanent structures, mostly rentals and some that seem to be owned," notes Laura H. about Space Coast RV Resort.
Utility connections: Joy RV Park provides full hookups at competitive rates. "Each site is equipped with water hookups, electric connections, and sewage facilities. What's impressive is that these amenities are available on every site, setting them apart as the most competitively priced campground in the vicinity," explains Amelie G.
Launch day preparations: RVers should prepare for increased traffic during rocket launches. "We got to see a space X rocket launch from the space center from the campground. Located close to all attractions including disney, and the space center and lots of other great places to see," shares Robin M. about Space Coast RV Resort.
