Best Campgrounds near Midland, CO

Camping options near Midland, Colorado range from established campgrounds to dispersed sites across public lands. The area includes Mueller State Park Campground near Divide with tent, RV, cabin, and glamping accommodations open year-round. Several privately operated facilities like Lone Duck Campground and Cabins in Cascade and Cripple Creek KOA provide amenities such as electric hookups, showers, and picnic tables. For those seeking more primitive experiences, dispersed camping is available along Rampart Range Road and Gold Camp Road, which typically feature no amenities but allow for free camping.

Road conditions vary significantly across the region, particularly for accessing more remote sites. The Crags Campground, located near the Raspberry Mountain trail, requires navigating several miles of steep dirt roads. "The 3.4 mile dirt road up the mountain can be quite steep, at times rough, and narrow with water erosion on one side creating sizable troughs," noted one camper about accessing the Crags. Weather can change rapidly at these elevations, with overnight temperatures dropping significantly even during summer months. Most dispersed camping areas lack cell service, so travelers should plan accordingly. Established campgrounds like Mueller State Park often require reservations, while dispersed areas operate on first-come, first-served basis with varying seasonal closures, typically between October and May depending on snow conditions.

Many campers highlight the quiet solitude available at locations like Crags Campground. "Very affordable, good hiking, gorgeous formations, nice flowing creek," mentioned one visitor about this forest service campground. Wildlife viewing opportunities are abundant throughout the region, with multiple reports of deer, elk, and occasional black bear sightings, particularly at Mueller State Park. Camping near creeks and streams is especially popular, with sites along water features filling quickly during peak season. Elevation in the region typically ranges from 8,000 to 10,000 feet, creating cool overnight conditions even in summer months. Most established campgrounds provide fire rings, though seasonal fire restrictions are common during dry periods. The proximity to Pike's Peak and numerous hiking trails makes the area particularly attractive for outdoor enthusiasts seeking camping areas with direct trail access.

    Redskin Creek Rd Designated Campsite

    Great, quick from Denver

Stayed at site 34- which I believe was the last of this run. Went further up the road to Wellington lake after we set up. There was maybe 3/4 other sites during that drive.

Super cool area. Can walk around each site to explore and up to Wellington lake(very low water level). Welling ton lake also has camping but it is paid. There is also a fee just for day use as it is a private owned lake $14(adults 18+). Catch and release fishing. Unfortunately the hiking trail to the waterfall was closed due to May trees down :(

Rangers, sheriffs, and nps were up and down the road strongly enforcing the fire ban. I get it. When you camp you want a fire but unfortunately Colorado's winter sucked leading to it being dry as heck. Bring extra propane as camp grills are okay.

Gold Camp Road/Forest Service Road 376 Dispersed

    Easy to Access

We drove in at night so it was hard to tell how many sites were available. We found a good one in a large clearing that easily fit our camper… it would have been a perfect site for multiple campers because there were multiple fire pits. It was also across the road from the creek! Overall easy to access, not crowded (in late March) and pretty landscape. Only drawback was a lot of casings and some trash leftover from previous campers.

Unless you want to off-road, recommend taking the route (if starting near COS) through Woodland Park & Divide.

    Redskin Creek Rd Designated Campsite

    Spacious spots close to Denver

Pulled in on a Wednesday evening (3/18) and 1/2 sites were full. We only drove into the 30s and turned around to claim site 23.

Only a few spots are across from one another or beside each other. Majority of the sites are spaced out which was really nice.

Lots of 🚴 so be prepared for bike traffic.

Each site is numbered and has a fire pit. No water, no bathrooms, no electricity, and no T Mobile service. Sites are designed for tent camping, only a few allow you to pull a vehicle in past side of the road. #23 worked well for a car camp - level and far enough pull in from road.

    Mount Herman Road Dispersed Camping

Very Scenic with lots of campsites

Not far from the monument exit on I-25. The road is rocky bumpy & rutty in many areas. In others its smooth.  Yet suitable for 2wd vehicles.  Some campsites have mobile data & many do not.  I found a nice site with plenty of firewood if you are willing to climb up & down steep hillsides to gather.  I seen the abandoned truck camper but not the piles of trash while scouting around on my motorcycle. Only plated motorbikes are allowed in this area & its fun to explore. Winding mountain trail.

    Lone Rock Campground

    Beautiful spot by the river

The river running by, the accessible toilets and fire pits are a nice touch. This is the time of year to enjoy the place to yourself and chill your beers in the river. Highly recommended!

    Mountaindale Cabin & RV Resort

    Really Nice Campground

Beautiful area! Spacious RV spots with full hookups. Really nice, heated bathrooms with showers. Staff guides you to your spot and is very informative. The only downside was that the on site store was not open due to “winter hours”.

Guide to Midland

Camping spots near Midland, Colorado range from secluded forest sites to developed campgrounds with full hookups. This mountainous region sits at elevations between 8,000-10,000 feet, creating challenging access conditions for many dispersed areas. Winter closures typically restrict access to remote camping locations from October through May, with seasonal openings dependent on snowmelt and road conditions.

What to do

Hike to Pikes Peak: Access the less-traveled backside trail from Crags Campground. "Great place to stay if you are wanting to hike pikes peak. Close to the trailhead that will take you up. This is on the backside of the mountain if you are in Colorado Springs," notes one visitor to Crags Campground.

Fish at Rampart Reservoir: Located near Gold Camp Road dispersed camping areas, this reservoir offers excellent fishing opportunities. "We took this hike and it was absolutely fantastic a majestic walk through the woods brings you to flowing creek that you follow all the way down to the reservoir," shares a camper who stayed at Gold Camp Road/Forest Service Road 376 Dispersed.

Visit historic mining towns: The nearby towns of Cripple Creek and Victor provide glimpses into Colorado's gold rush past. "Great hiking nearby and the towns of Cripple Creek and Victor are full of old mining history!" remarks a camper who enjoyed Cripple Creek KOA.

What campers like

Creek-side camping: Many sites along water features provide peaceful natural soundscapes. "We have stayed here twice once in campsite 46 very nice 47 even nicer two best lots here for us cuz we like being the by the water. The rush go by all night let's just sleep so good," describes a visitor to Lone Duck Campground and Cabins.

Wildlife viewing: Deer frequently visit camping areas throughout the region. "We woke up one morning at our tent site with deer walking and eating down the creek right next to us," shares a camper about their experience at Lone Duck Campground.

Dark skies for stargazing: Remote dispersed sites offer excellent night sky viewing. "Very quiet, fairly secluded. Dark skies, direct access to creek," notes a camper who stayed at Gold Camp Road/Forest Service Road 376 Dispersed.

What you should know

Road conditions vary dramatically: Many dispersed sites require navigating rough roads. "The road in is gravel and pretty choppy, but the weather was good and my car made it fine but I was going like 5 mph. If the weather wasn't good you would probably need 4x4," warns a camper about Rampart Range Road - Dispersed Camping.

Altitude affects comfort: Most campgrounds sit above 8,000 feet, which impacts sleep and physical activity. "The air is thin up here- real thin. That also means that it's pure, clean blissfully light oxygen so breathe deep and enjoy it," explains a visitor to Cripple Creek KOA.

Trash issues at dispersed sites: Pack-out protocols aren't always followed at free camping areas. "We arrived and notice the trash not the beauty of the mountain. There was trash everywhere and not just camping trash. People have been dumping here," reports a visitor to Cascade-Chipita Park/Woodland Park.

Tips for camping with families

Look for campgrounds with activities: Some established campgrounds offer family-friendly amenities. "They have a pool, laundry room, gift shop/Grocery. Arcade, pond, clean bathrooms. Best place every. And surrounded by mountains!" recommends a visitor to Lone Duck Campground.

Consider campgrounds with playgrounds: Children need recreation spaces after long car rides. "We stayed in conifer 25. Close to comfort station and playground. Coin showers but are super clean," notes a camper who visited Mueller State Park Campground.

Plan for weather changes: Prepare for sudden temperature drops, even in summer. "We spent most of the days away from base camp but in the late afternoon and evenings it was mostly quite. We woke up a few mornings to other campers down the road from us usually only stayed one night. Got below freezing so be ready for the cold," advises a camper who stayed at Cascade-Chipita Park/Woodland Park.

Tips from RVers

Call ahead for tight sites: Many RV parks have limited maneuvering space. "Unfortunately the RV park is nice, you're more-so paying for the location. The spots were really tight, but we spent most of our time out exploring the parks and historic Manitou Springs so we made it work during our stay," shares a camper at Garden of the Gods RV Resort.

Check for leveling challenges: Bring appropriate equipment for uneven sites. "Some sites are not very level, but others are quite level. Easy to book and pick your desired site," advises an RVer who stayed at Diamond Campground & RV Park.

Prepare for seasonal extremes: Mountain elevations mean wide temperature swings between day and night. "By 10:00 P.M. it seemed most of the spots were filled. The nights were cold some lows 32° and it snowed the first night which we were hoping for. The sunrises were stunning watching the sunlight slowly shed light on the golden aspens was a beautiful sight," explains a visitor to Cascade-Chipita Park/Woodland Park.
