What to do
Mountain biking trails: Buffalo Creek Recreation Area provides extensive trail networks popular with cycling enthusiasts. "Great place to spend a day to a few weeks depending on lifestyle. Í live out of my van and met a friend here few sites right off the highway with service. Fire pits and hiking near," notes atea J. at Buffalo Creek Recreation Area.
Water recreation: The reservoir at Rampart Range Recreation Area offers swimming and paddling opportunities. A visitor observed, "We went up for a quick weekend trip and it was perfect, lots of campsites along the road and not too close together. The road was decent to drive on a few bumps but nothing crazy. The sites were clean and well maintained," according to Emma H.
Fishing access: Clear Creek RV Park provides direct access to fishing spots along the creek. "There is so much to do at this location; aside from the sectioned off RV area, there are lots of paths and locals parks to adventure around. Tubing & swimming in the creek is wonderful especially in summertime. Our favorite is the fishing, so much fun fishing in all the different spots along the creek," writes Dea D.
What campers like
Spacious sites: Rampart Range Recreation Area offers dispersed camping with room to spread out. "We researched the spots in this area, and were surprised at how far spread the sites actually are. I had eyeballed site 83 and hoped we'd get to it. We arrived Wednesday morning and realized it was too far in than we would've liked so we landed at site 33 and it was AMAZING! No trail directly near the site, no sites surrounding," reports Taylor V.
Weekday solitude: Sites fill quickly on weekends but offer peaceful experiences midweek. "We came up Sunday and drove around for an hour trying to find a spot. It was so busy with campers and there were dirt bikers everywhere! Sunday evening it cleared up and we were the only ones there mon-tues! I loved the spot we found, super peaceful and secluded," shares Halee E.
Flat tent areas: Indian Creek Campground provides well-maintained sites. "On a positive note, our campsite had a very nice, large picnic table and a fire pit with an adjustable grate. It also had a grill and a very nice flat area for our tent," notes Rachel H.
What you should know
ATV traffic: Rampart Range experiences heavy off-road vehicle use, especially on weekends. "A lot of OHV riders in the area. Not a big deal b/c we expected it. Just be aware," shares Austin S.
Site availability: Buffalo Creek fills extremely quickly before weekends. "Beautiful spot with easy access to lots of trails and Wellington lake. Only downside is that it is very difficult to find a spot on a weekend. We got up there around 6:30pm on Friday night and after driving around for a couple hours ended up bailing and going home," warns Keiko F. at Buffalo Creek Recreation Area.
Water status changes: Some campgrounds experience water issues. "CHECK WATER STATUS BEFORE COMING. This was a beautiful stay. Friendly host, very spacious sites with lots of shade, and great access to Indian creek trailhead. The perfect start to my colorado trail thru hike! Campsites were half price when I was there because the water was contaminated though, be aware of that," advises Katie H.
Tips for camping with families
Kid-focused amenities: Jellystone Park™ at Larkspur offers extensive family programming. "So much to do for the littles!! Recently completely redone the entire park and it is all so wonderful! The campsites are amazing and the activities are so much fun. I love the proximity to Denver. Our kiddos love the characters," shares Stacy M.
Wildlife education opportunities: Buffalo Creek showcases forest regeneration. "Much of the area still shows scars from the 1996 fire here, but the sprouts and smaller trees show you a preview of how nature heals and is ultimately uplifting. Big camping spots, fun campground vibes, noise restrictions so don't worry your kiddos won't be able to hit a reasonable bed time," notes andrew B.
Accessible sites: Indian Creek Campground offers sites suitable for families with mobility needs. "This is a lovely campground with a very friendly host. However, if you want a quiet campground, it may not meet your expectations. Because of its proximity to Denver, we can constantly hear the jets flying in and out of the airport," cautions Rachel H.
Tips for RVers
Leveling considerations: Clear Creek RV Park requires preparation for some sites. "Stayed here for a month and a half with electric only (full hook up spots for extended stays were already taken but that was okay). Staff is extremely helpful and accommodating. Sites 8 & 9 are extremely unlevel, but the other sites are pretty fine," advises Janine R.
Pet friendly policies: For pet friendly camping near Louviers, Colorado, check park-specific rules. "Portable dog pens are not allowed. Tethering is not allowed. We don't like tethering and our rv is small so we travel with some wire folding dog fence so that our dogs can hop in and out of the rv when the weather is good. At this park they can only be on a 6 ft leash attached to a human," reports CK C. at Dakota Ridge RV Park.
Road conditions: Dakan Road Camping requires appropriate vehicles. "All along Dakan Road (also known as Hidden Valley Road), there are dispersed campsites marked by a sign with a tent on it. They are all first come first serve, but offer great solitude in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains. Dakan Road is mostly known as an Off-Road vehicle Road, so 4x4's are suggested to get up to the sites," explains Weston S.
