Best RV Parks & Resorts near Lake City, CO

CAMPER SUMMARY PRESENTED BYFord

Lake City's RV campgrounds include Elkhorn RV Resort in town, open from May to October, and Henson Creek RV Park, both offering full-hookup sites on gravel pads. Elkhorn provides 50-amp electrical service, water and sewer connections, with sites positioned close together against the mountain. "Tight back in sites on gravel. Fairly level. 30 amp power," noted one visitor about the area's RV accommodations. Highlander RV Campground, located on County Road 30, operates from May through mid-October with pull-through rv pads that accommodate larger motorhomes. Sites throughout the area typically include picnic tables and fire rings, though spacing varies considerably between parks.

Mountain terrain affects RV access to some parks, with elevation changes requiring careful navigation for larger rigs. Dump stations are available at Elkhorn, Henson Creek, and Highlander RV parks, though not all dispersed camping areas offer this service. Most established parks accept reservations, with several visitors noting that booking well in advance is essential during summer and fall color seasons. According to reviews on The Dyrt, cell service varies significantly throughout the region, with better connectivity in town than at outlying campgrounds. Pet policies differ between locations—most allow leashed pets but restrict them from certain amenities like fire pit areas. Winter closure is common for most Lake City RV facilities, with only limited options remaining open between November and April.

    Lost Trail

Lovely site near the Rio Grande

Most sites are Park and walk into fire pit and table area. A few scattered back-in sites. No pull through. Nice wooden picnic tables, men and women’s bathrooms. Level tent sites, water pump on site but nothing available in October. No cell service. Loads of down wood for collection. Close to river access

South Rim Campground — Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park

    Winter camping!

We stayed in the winter off season in Loop A, since it’s the only loop open. They plow Loop A and all pull through sites. There was no fee for the campsite, just the park entrance fee. There’s no power in this loop and there’s no water since it’s shut off in the winter. There are pit toilets which are pretty clean for pit toilets. There were a few campers but they were spread so far apart since everyone needed pull through sites cause it snowed a lot recently. Some places the snow is up to your thighs and some places it’s up to your waist.

Even without amenities, we were happy a campground was open in the Colorado winter.

    Ouray KOA Holiday

    Quaint and quiet

Stayed at a small back-in site with 30 amp & electric in our camper van. The site had a fire ring, grill, and picnic table. Loved that they had a store, laundry room, and firewood for sale. The store closes at 5:00 & we arrived at 5:10 but the office lady still checked us in and made sure we had firewood. The campground is well-maintained and clean.

    Ouray Riverside Resort

    Beautiful Ouray

Nestled in a valley with beautiful view next to Uncompahgre River with wonderful walking path. Gravel parking right off hwy 550. Laundry, showers, restaurant. Primitive cabins and fully equipped cabins. Very friendly staff. Pet friendly. Close to uptown shopping and eating & grocery store. Pull thru and back in sites. Overflow parking for extra vehicles for a charge. Down side-you have to trailer to trailheads for SXS riding. Most tail heads are small parking areas but the riding in the mountains is priceless. Been here twice, same site and would go again.

    Little Molas Lake Campground

    Poplar picturesque site

6/28/22 - 7/12/22: This was a nice retreat for us. It is a very popular place on the weekend, but during the week it is much quieter. Most of the weekend traffic is heading to the trailhead for hiking or biking. There are 8 sites here, several large enough for my 34’ fifth-wheel trailer, one is a pull-through with two sites. Vault toilet, no water or dump station. There was 1-bar 5G Verizon, and 2-bars AT&T 4G that were both spotty; cloud cover between the lake and Silverton caused occational intermittent connectivity. Elevation is about 10,300 and posed a problem for our generator that caused severe spark-plug fouling. But, re-jetting the carburetor from a #61 to #58 solved the problem.

Mountain Time RV Park & Cabins (Formerly Tall Texan)

Easily accessible RV park near Gunnison, CO

They have a great staff that is friendly and always accessible! We have a back-in site but they have pull throughs also. There is a playground for the kids, laundry, and bathrooms with showers. They allow fires and provide a “fire pit” that is constructed from an old washer tub with legs welded on. Just ask for one at the front desk. They also sell firewood for the fire. Oh, and they come by and pick up your trash at your site between 9-5 each day just leave your bag out by the road. There are full hookups at most of the sites. The area is in walking distance of the Gunnison River and there is a nice hiking trail on the south side of the river heading west. There is also a bike path that goes back into town and up the road toward Crested Butte. On the main road (intersection of CR11 and highway 135) there is a bus stop for a free bus trip into Gunnison. The men’s bathroom had a couple of issues, the overhead light didn’t work very well and one of the toilets was malfunctioning but they got those fixed pretty quickly. There is a nice combination of shade (from the trees) and sun at all the sites.

    Woods Lake Campground

Camping among aspens with mountain views

Fantastic national forest campground. Mountain views all around. Woods Lake itself was a short hike away. Enjoyed fishing there with beautiful views. The campground is over 9400 feet in elevation. I did some huffing & puffing while walking around there. Our campsite, #4, was narrow & deep; no problem for a camper van. It has a table, metal fire ring/grill, lantern poll and a tent pad set back deeper in the woods. Surrounded by aspens. Camped there in early June. Vault toilets were not yet open, but clean portable chem toilets were provided. Potable water stations were not yet turned on. Helpful camp host was on duty. Firewood was available at $10/bundle. Our site, as well as others, were private & reasonably separated from others. No shower and hookups. Deer everywhere. Saw sign of mountain lions & bears on the nearby hiking trails. This is one of the prettiest national forest campgrounds that I ever camped in.

Dakota Terraces Campground — Ridgway State Park

    Winter camping

If you are looking for a quiet and serene camping experience in the winter, this is your campground. Ridgeway State Park has one loop open during the winter in Dakota Terraces. They have winter rates. And they have great cell signal if you have Verizon and supposedly AT&T. (There’s a cell tower in one of the park’s campgrounds.)

[Internet. Verizon via iPhone 12: 14 mbps down and 4 mbps up with 51 ms ping.]

Read all the campground details straight from the park’s website before winter camping. Keep in mind the guest services building is closed for the winter. That means no laundry or showers. The restroom building is open. The dump station is open but the water fill is shut off. You can, however, fill you tanks up using the water spigots throughout the campground. We use a 5-gallon jerry can to transport the water. We’ve been here through a winter storm and they haven’t frozen yet. They also plow the roads.

The visitor center is open which you should check out! There’s an overlook there. This time of year part of the reservoir is frozen. You can get loaner snow shoes at the visitor center! How awesome! Since it’s snowed almost a foot, we’ve been snowshoeing all over the park and through the trails and closed campgrounds.

There’s like 5 campsites occupied. It’s so quiet. We have our own little winter wonderland.

Guide to Lake City

Lake City sits at 8,671 feet elevation in Colorado's San Juan Mountains, surrounded by some of the state's most remote wilderness areas. The camping season runs primarily from late May through mid-October due to significant snowfall and temperature drops outside these months. Nearby Lake San Cristobal, Colorado's second-largest natural lake, provides additional recreation opportunities for campers seeking RV sites near Lake City, Colorado.

What to do

Fishing access: Many Elkhorn RV Resort visitors appreciate the proximity to excellent fishing spots. "Remote, gorgeous, and the owners are fantastic. It's very clean, very community oriented and walking distance to everything in Lake City," notes one camper.

River walks: Campers at Ouray Riverside Resort enjoy the scenic riverside trail. "The river walk into town is so beautiful! The park is maintained with pride, hook ups and WiFi are great," writes one visitor, while another adds "We loved the trail into town - an easy walk to the hot springs pool or to grab something to eat."

Horseback riding: Families staying at Blue Mesa Recreational Ranch can arrange trail rides directly from the property. "There is so much to do on the ranch such as swim in the pools, play games, horseback ride, etc." One reviewer points out this option is particularly convenient for those who want to explore the surrounding terrain without driving.

What campers like

Mountain views: The dramatic alpine scenery impresses visitors at RV parks near Lake City. One 4J + 1+ 1 RV Park camper explains, "Primo campground right in the city of Ouray. Our site is next to the river so we've got the sounds of the river and Mountain Views on all sides."

Clean facilities: Well-maintained bathrooms are consistently mentioned in reviews. "The bathrooms are very roomy, and they have plenty of hot showers," notes one camper about 4J + 1+ 1 RV Park, while another mentions that "Bathrooms are clean and the staff was friendly and helpful."

Community atmosphere: Several campgrounds foster a social environment. At Elkhorn RV Resort, campers appreciate the "very community oriented" setting. Another reviewer at Blue Mesa Recreational Ranch highlights the "welcoming community vibe" that makes longer stays more enjoyable.

What you should know

Winter closures: Most RV parks near Lake City operate seasonally. Antlers Rio Grande Lodge operates from "May 15 - Oct 1," while Highlander RV Campground runs from "May 1 to October 15." Elkhorn RV Resort opens "May 1 to October 31."

Limited connectivity: Cell service varies significantly throughout the region. At Antlers Rio Grande Lodge and RV Park, campers report good connectivity, while a Blue Mesa reviewer notes, "There is NO service here but the lodge does have WiFi."

Reservation requirements: During peak season, advance bookings are essential. "Call to make reservations. Linda gets right back to you," advises one Elkhorn RV camper. Sites at the most popular parks fill quickly from July through early September.

Elevation considerations: The high altitude affects many visitors. Temperatures can drop sharply after sunset even in summer months. Proper hydration and acclimatization time are necessary, as one Blue Mesa reviewer noted: "not being used to 7,000 feet I was sucking air."

Tips for camping with families

Swimming options: Blue Mesa Recreational Ranch provides both indoor and outdoor pools. "We thoroughly enjoyed the outdoor pool for the kids! Both indoor and outdoor pools were clean, well-maintained, and perfect for unwinding after a day of exploring," reports one family.

Kid-friendly fishing: Several campgrounds offer accessible fishing opportunities for children. "There is an indoor and outdoor pool, playground, cool mini golf set up, horses, and a lake for kids to fish in!" notes one Blue Mesa visitor.

Walking distance amenities: Choose campgrounds with easy access to town activities. "This park is within walking distance of Ouray's most popular sight seeing. It's only a few blocks from breweries, restaurants, and just down the road from the town hot springs!" explains one 4J + 1+ 1 RV Park reviewer.

Cabin options: For families without RVs, some parks offer cabin accommodations. "We also stayed on one of the cabins to give kids more trailer room. You provide the top bedding, but there was a queen bed and a bunk (so 4 could sleep easy)," shares an Elkhorn RV Resort guest.

Tips from RVers

Site leveling challenges: Many RV sites require leveling equipment. One camper at Red Mountain Motel & RV Park advises, "make sure you have blocks as they are not level at all."

Seasonal freeze protection: Cold nights require special precautions even in summer. As one reviewer at Red Mountain Motel & RV Park noted: "We were here in mid-September and the temps got down into the 30's at night. Owners required disconnecting water at night to prevent their water pipes from freezing and bursting."

Walking access: Select an RV park with pedestrian access to reduce driving needs. A Henson Creek RV Park visitor recommends: "Just a gravel lot with tight slots but can't beat this location- walkable to town and parks."

Hookup variations: Full-service hookups aren't universal at all RV sites near Lake City. "Full hookup, sewer hook up on each site" notes one 4J + 1+ 1 RV Park camper, while others mention varying electrical amperage options between parks.
