Best Cabin Camping near Lake City, CO

Elkhorn RV Resort and Castle Lakes Campground offer log cabin accommodations near Lake City, Colorado with varying amenities. Elkhorn cabins sleep 4 people with a queen bed and bunk beds, providing basic lodging without private bathrooms. As one visitor noted, "You provide the top bedding, but there was a queen bed and a bunk (so 4 could sleep easy). No bathrooms in the cabin but you're close to the bathrooms." Castle Lakes cabins provide more rustic accommodations alongside two stocked fishing lakes, with standard electricity and heating during the cooler months.

Rustic and deluxe cabins are both available, depending on the location. Most properties require advance reservations, particularly during peak summer seasons from May through October when Lake City sees its highest visitor traffic. Elkhorn RV Resort operates seasonally from May 1 to October 31, while Castle Lakes Campground runs from May 15 to October 1. Pet policies vary by property - some cabins welcome pets while others restrict them completely. A review mentioned that Castle Lakes Campground cabins are "level and easy to get to. Most face the two stocked lakes," making them convenient for families seeking fishing access.

Most cabins include beds but require visitors to bring their own linens, towels, and toiletries. Elkhorn RV Resort specifically notes that guests must provide top bedding for the queen and bunk beds in their cabins. Kitchen facilities are limited in most cabin units, though some properties offer communal cooking areas nearby. On-site markets are available at several properties, including Castle Lakes Campground, which features a small gift shop. Bathroom and shower facilities are centrally located within the campgrounds rather than inside individual cabins, with one visitor noting they were "remarkably clean" at Castle Lakes.

    Ouray KOA

    Heaven in the mountains

Wow is all I can say! After surviving towing the airstream up Red Mountain pass, we pulled into the KOA and couldn’t be more happy. Our site backed up to a stream that sounded wonderful with running water. Each site has a picnic table and a combo fire ring/grill. They even welcome you with three large fire logs! They now offer horseback riding right from inside the KOA. They have everything from teepees to tent, cabin and RV camping. A great restaurant on site with a well stocked store and laundry facilities. This place is really well run. The only complaint is the WiFi, which is non existent, however, they are currently working on that and should have campwide WiFi by summer.

    Elkhorn RV Resort

    Great spot in Lake City

This is our first visit to Lake City so I've nothing to compare it to, but I loved this RVPark. Linda was gracious and accommodating. Bathrooms were spotless AND warm. We are at tail end of season so the park was not full at all, but even if it had been there are tables and trees between each site keeping from feeling claustrophobic. We drove past the other RV Park in town - on Henson Creek - you are on the river, but also on the highway and it was packed in. Elk Horn is off the highway nestled against the mountain, and just 4 block walk to "down town" Lake City. Highly recommend this spot. Call to make reservations. Linda gets right back to you. We also stayed on one of the cabins to give kids more trailer room. You provide the top bedding, but there was a queen bed and a bunk (so 4 could sleep easy). No bathrooms in the cabin but your close to the bathrooms.

    Durango North-Riverside KOA

    Clean KOA

RV sites, some tent sites and cabins. Cabins have a single and a bunk, power, porch light, picnic tables and firepit. Office has firewood. Bathrooms are stall, showers are stall/ curtained. Camp was clean and well kept. We brought a small grill and scavenged rocks to set it on; ate like kings. Great views of star as from this elevation.

Yurt Camping, yes dogs are allowed

In addition to plenty of tent and RV sites, Ridgeway SP also has three heated and furnished yurts for those seeking an enhanced comfort level. Each unit includes a fridge, futon type beds, dinner table and chairs. Bring your fishing poles, hiking shoes, water craft and dogs, cause they're all allowed.

    Ouray Riverside Resort

    Beautiful Ouray

Nestled in a valley with beautiful view next to Uncompahgre River with wonderful walking path. Gravel parking right off hwy 550. Laundry, showers, restaurant. Primitive cabins and fully equipped cabins. Very friendly staff. Pet friendly. Close to uptown shopping and eating & grocery store. Pull thru and back in sites. Overflow parking for extra vehicles for a charge. Down side-you have to trailer to trailheads for SXS riding. Most tail heads are small parking areas but the riding in the mountains is priceless. Been here twice, same site and would go again.

South Fork Lodge & RV Park

Gravel pit, no bathroom, no amenities, ATV heavy

This is been one of my least favorite spots to stay thus far. This park has no bathrooms, no laundry, no fire pits… Nothing but a picnic table. It is fully gravel, sites weren’t level, and very loud early mornings with all of the ATV activity. I think it is far too expensive for the stay. The staff is nice, and it’s family owned—but everything else, including the location pretty much sucked. I really think it’s worth it to find another park around the area to stay.

We had full hook ups. WiFi didn’t work and no Phone service.

    Ouray KOA

Best spot for tent, RV, & cabin!

The spots are spread out enough that you have privacy, there’s attendants around 24 hours of the day to help, and it’s hands down the cleanest place we’ve ever stayed. We rented a cabin (we stopped in on July 4th, sold out of tent spots) but they managed to accommodate us last minute. The staff is incredibly nice, and the price was right. Our cabin is the 2nd biggest option, it included: a queen, bunk beds, love seat, fridge, sink, and a microwave.

    Little Molas Lake Campground

Busy campground on the Colorado Trail

Nice little campground on the Million Dollar Highway heading between Durango and Silverton, with the Colorado Trail passing right through the campground. There is a main road with sites spread out over a few close ridges, and a small loop that ends in at the day use parking and vault toilet. It seemed that the “group” sites were closest to the vault toilets next to the day use parking, which could present an issue as it was very busy. The “group” sites were very crowded, which could have been just too many people in a small area, or the area could have been just too small.  Sites further away from the toilets were more spacious, but no site was huge. All sites seemed to have good hammocking trees. It seemed the best sites were the ones closest to the entrance: the parking pads were up next to the road and the tent pads and fire rings were set back from the road down a steepish grade. This was a great spot to camp as a home base for hiking the Colorado Trail. There are great trails heading out of the campground in both directions. The usual picnic tables and fire pits could be found at all sites we looked at.

    Ouray KOA Holiday

    Quaint and quiet

Stayed at a small back-in site with 30 amp & electric in our camper van. The site had a fire ring, grill, and picnic table. Loved that they had a store, laundry room, and firewood for sale. The store closes at 5:00 & we arrived at 5:10 but the office lady still checked us in and made sure we had firewood. The campground is well-maintained and clean.

Guide to Lake City

Cabin camping near Lake City, Colorado provides access to the San Juan Mountains at an elevation of 8,671 feet. The area experiences short summers with cool nights even during July and August when daytime temperatures typically range from 70-80°F. Most cabin facilities in the region operate seasonally from May through October due to heavy winter snowfall that makes access difficult.

What to do

Riverside walks: Ouray Riverside Resort offers cabins with excellent walking access to town. "The river walk into town is so beautiful! The park is maintained with pride, hook ups and WiFi are great!!" One visitor noted that "the river has a walking trail which leads to the hot springs and town."

Fishing opportunities: Cabins near stocked lakes provide easy fishing access during your stay. A visitor at Castle Lakes Campground mentioned "near Lake City and all the fun activities that the area has to offer. Wildlife, trails, and 4 wheeling. Fishing on site or go ask Dan at his fly shop for nearby streams and lake."

ATV/Jeep trail access: Many cabin locations serve as perfect baselines for off-road adventures. "Close by to Ouray for great SXS and off-road trails. Must tow there with trailer," notes one visitor about local accommodations. The Alpine Loop is accessible from several cabin locations and provides spectacular mountain views and historic mining sites.

What campers like

Mountain views: Cabins situated in valley locations offer panoramic mountain scenery. One visitor at Silverton Lakes RV Resort noted "The views here were postcardish. Pure beauty." Another camper mentioned "The beautiful mountain scenery surrounding the campground is also awesome!"

Clean facilities: Several cabin locations maintain high cleanliness standards despite rustic settings. At Ouray KOA Holiday, a visitor appreciated "stunning views, private spaces nestled amidst trees, clean facilities, a great restaurant and two playgrounds! The staff are some of the sweetest and friendliest we've met."

Convenience to town: Many cabins offer both seclusion and proximity to services. At 4J + 1+ 1 RV Park, a reviewer praised its "primo campground right in the city of Ouray. Our site is next to the river so we've got the sounds of the river and Mountain Views on all sides." Another mentioned "within walking distance to town. Easy in and out with fair sized camp spot."

What you should know

Seasonal operations: Most cabin facilities close during winter months. Silverton Lakes RV Resort was noted to "close September 29 for the season" by one visitor. Weather conditions can change rapidly even during summer months, with potential for afternoon thunderstorms.

Variable amenities: Cabin standards vary significantly between properties. One visitor at Elkhorn RV Resort found "remote, gorgeous, and the owners are fantastic. It's very clean, very community oriented and walking distance to everything in Lake City. The sites are smaller but fantastic."

Reservation requirements: Popular cabin locations book quickly during peak season. One visitor to a local campground mentioned "We pre-booked our site for next year to make sure we had a great spot." Early reservations are especially important for lakeside cabins or those with specific amenities like electricity.

Internet connectivity: WiFi availability varies between properties. A visitor noted at one location "Internet only near office. T mobile good." Cell service can be limited in canyon areas and more remote cabin locations.

Tips for camping with families

Playground access: Several cabin locations include play areas for children. At Ouray KOA Holiday, families appreciate that "Kids loved the playground and jump pad!" The accommodation offers "so much to offer families! Stunning views, private spaces nestled amidst trees, clean facilities, a great restaurant and two playgrounds!"

Water activities: Lakes near cabin locations provide swimming and water recreation options. At Ridgway State Park, "This park is a great place for families because there is so much to do, from the endless bike trails to fishing and water access." One visitor mentioned the "beautiful swimming beach, plenty of hiking trails."

Wildlife viewing: Many cabin locations offer opportunities to see local wildlife. A visitor to Castle Lakes Campground reported "We saw abundant wildlife, including an American bald eagle, deer, moose and lots of curious chipmunks." Early morning and dusk provide the best wildlife viewing times.

Tips from RVers

Site leveling: Some cabin and RV sites require adjustment equipment. At one location, a visitor noted "The spaces are very close together, on gravel and not flat. My front wheels were 14" off the ground." Bringing additional blocks or leveling equipment is recommended.

Hookup variations: Properties differ in what utilities are available. "Full hook-ups, 50 & 30 amp" were mentioned at one location, while others have more limited services. Many cabin locations don't include bathroom facilities directly in units, so access to campground bathhouses is important.

Off-season advantages: Visiting during shoulder seasons (May/June or September/October) can mean better availability and quieter conditions. "Stayed here the end of May and just drove up, no reservations needed" noted one visitor, though this becomes less likely during peak summer months.
