Best Tent Camping near Buena Vista, CO

National Forest lands surrounding Buena Vista, Colorado offer numerous primitive tent camping opportunities with varying levels of accessibility and amenities. North Cottonwood Trailhead Dispersed Camping provides tent campsites along County Road 365, approximately 7-8 miles from town, serving as an excellent gateway to the Collegiate Peaks Wilderness Area. Chaffee County Road 390 Dispersed camping features walk-in tent sites with established fire rings and access to multiple 14,000-foot peaks. Browns Creek South Dispersed Camping, located between Buena Vista and Salida, offers secluded tent camping under tall pines with mountain views of Mt. Princeton.

Tent camping surfaces throughout the region consist primarily of natural forest floor with minimal site preparation. High-clearance vehicles are recommended for accessing many primitive tent campgrounds, particularly those along county roads with rough, unpaved sections. A camper at North Cottonwood noted that while 2WD vehicles can reach the trailhead, "high clearance FWD vehicles" provide better access. Most dispersed sites lack amenities - no drinking water, no toilets, and limited cell service. Fire restrictions are common during dry periods, so checking with local ranger stations before planning campfires is essential. Nighttime temperatures can drop significantly even in summer, with sites at higher elevations experiencing freezing temperatures well into the camping season.

Backcountry tent camping experiences vary significantly with elevation and proximity to popular trailheads. One visitor to Browns Creek South reported "big wide dispersed camping spaces" with "plenty of nice hiking," noting the area was "peaceful" despite August dryness and lack of nearby water. Sites along Chaffee County Road 390 offer excellent mountain views but suffer from constant traffic noise, with one camper reporting that "hikers start pouring down the road" before 4:30 AM heading to nearby 14ers. For tent-only camping with more privacy, visitors recommend seeking sites that branch off main roads on secondary forest service roads, where the spacing between sites creates a more remote backcountry experience.

    Collegiate Peaks

Beautiful and the people really practice leave no trace.

I gave this a 4 star because of the crowds.I backpacked to a high alpine lake called Kroenke Lake in the Collegiate Peaks wilderness area near Buena Vista, CO in August to catch some high country Cutthroats. This is a very popular hike during the summer. Camping can be congested but there are enough trees in between spots for some privacy. The designated camp sites we kept very clean by the previous visitors. There was not any trash in or around the fire ring that I often come across in other areas. The people that have previously visited, practiced leave no trace with the exception of the designated fire ring. The scenery was beautiful with a gorgeous lake with peaks of granite in the background. All of the people on the trail were friendly and courteous. It does get congested on the weekend being so close to Buena Vista and Salida. If you go little further, you can escape the congestion. I would highly recommend this hike to anyone looking for a weekend backpack trip.

Before Memorial Day sites may be FCFS and hosts and water may not be available. During peak season dates, some sites can be reserved by calling 800-444-6777 or on line at recreation.gov

Small trailers, RV's or tents as the sites are small. If you are not able to obtain a campsite you are not allowed to camp anywhere going up the mountain but if you go on up to St Elmo you might find some dispersed camping.

There are amazing mountain views with a beautiful stream running quickly down hill. The drive up the mountain and down is one of the best around. The trip up you may anticipate arriving in St Elmo, a 1800 ghost town. At the base of the mountain you will find the Chalk Bluffs. Some sites in the campground have shade, some do not but great for solar.

Directions: From Buena Vista, Colorado, take Highway 285 south for 7 miles to County Road 162. Turn west on County Road 162, traveling 8 miles to the Chalk Lake Campground

Hecla Junction Campground — Arkansas Headwaters Recreation Area

    World Class River Rafting

Hecla Junction is one of my favorite sites. The campground is north of Salida Colorado on the Arkansas River. This is the busy spot at the end of the commercial river rafting run. You access the campground from the main highway along a windy dirt road. It takes about 25 minutes to reach the river and the campground which is next to the boat ramp. The campground has great facilities and well designed sites. They have a few sites with views of the river on north end of the site. Each campground site has boulders to define the site, gravel base for tents, picnic tables, and fire rings. The toilets are very clean and well maintained and a camp host is on site. The highlight here is the river. We had fast moving water this summer with class III and IV rapids. It’s a great run from Buena Vista down to Hecla Junction. If the Hecla Junction Campground is full, we counted at least 3 dispersed sites on road leading down to the river including a BLM dispersed site.

Chapman Campground And Group Camp - White River NF

Remote, off grid camping in the mountains

This remote campground might pose some access challenges for larger rigs. Clean pit toilets, no showers, no laundry. Fresh drinking water and dumpsters are available. No dump station in campground. Mixture of river and non river sites. Plenty of room and privacy between sites. No mobile phone coverage, no wi-fi, no amenities within 30 miles of the campground. 2 campground hosts on site. Small reservoir lake nearby for fishing and canoeing. Hiking and fishing nearby. Each site has a picnic table, fire ring and bear box.

    Collegiate Peaks

    Great Camping Near Cottonwood Pass

Great large campground close to Cottonwood Pass and about 20 mins from Buena Vista. Most sites are nice, spacious, and wooded. Firewood for sale, pit toilets but no other services nearby unless you go into Buena Vista. Great campground, highly recommended.

Ruby Mountain Campground — Arkansas Headwaters Recreation Area

    Beautiful spot

Really gorgeous camping spot with easy access to tons of different outdoor activities. Tent sites are very well maintained and very beautiful. Walk-in sites are very close to parking, I would barely consider them walk-in sites. My only complaint is that the tent pads are made of gravel and therefore extremely hard to properly stake down tents.
