San Isabel National Forest encompasses Collegiate Peaks, a US Forest Service campground that accommodates RVs up to 50 feet with full water and sewer hookups. Located 15 minutes from Buena Vista via Cottonwood Pass Road, the campground operates from May through early September at $25 per night. Access involves some rough road conditions that reviewers consistently mention.
Dense aspen groves provide substantial shade throughout most sites, with Cottonwood Creek running alongside the campground perimeter. "Everything I want in a campground: roaring river, Aspen, trails views," notes patti S.. Sites vary significantly in size and creek proximity, with lettered sites positioned closest to the water. The campground spans multiple loops connected by dirt roads that generate dust during busy periods.
Fishing opportunities exist along Cottonwood Creek, while the location provides access to Collegiate Peaks Wilderness trailheads. Mount Princeton Hot Springs and the St. Elmo ghost town lie within driving distance for day trips. Vault toilets receive frequent cleaning, and campers report these facilities as notably well-maintained for a forest service campground. Firewood sales and garbage collection are available on-site.
Bear activity occurs regularly in the area, with several reviewers reporting nighttime visits around campsites. The campground fills quickly during summer weekends, though mid-week availability often remains. Reservations are recommended for peak season camping. Water from the hand pump requires filtration due to sediment content.
Sites closest to the creek book first, while interior locations still provide access to the water sounds that many campers appreciate. For those exploring the region, places to camp around Buena Vista offer additional options when Collegiate Peaks reaches capacity.
