Best Campgrounds near Buena Vista, CO

Campgrounds surrounding Buena Vista, Colorado range from established sites with amenities to primitive dispersed areas on public lands. The Arkansas Headwaters Recreation Area provides several developed campgrounds along the river, including Ruby Mountain and Hecla Junction, which offer electric hookups and reservable sites. Turtle Rock Campground and Raspberry Gulch offer free dispersed camping options for those seeking a more rustic experience. The area accommodates various camping styles with tent sites, RV hookups, cabins, and even glamping options at locations like BV Overlook.

Road conditions and site accessibility vary significantly by location and elevation throughout the region. Many campgrounds remain open year-round, though reservations are typically required from April through October at state-managed sites. Higher elevation locations like Collegiate Peaks Campground operate seasonally from May to September due to mountain weather patterns. As one camper noted, "There's not much at the ARH marker itself, but continue on down the one-lane, mildly-rough road to a number of very nice campsites down in the valley." Travelers should check weather forecasts and road conditions before venturing to more remote sites, as mountain storms can affect accessibility, particularly during spring runoff and summer monsoon season.

Camping experiences in the Buena Vista area feature dramatic mountain views and proximity to outdoor recreation. The established campgrounds near town provide convenient access to amenities while still offering scenic settings. Several visitors highlighted the mountain vistas as a key feature of their stay. One review mentioned that "The views are breathtaking! A short hike right in sight!" Most developed campgrounds maintain clean facilities and offer fire rings, though fire restrictions may apply during dry periods. Dispersed sites typically lack amenities but provide more solitude and direct access to trails and fishing spots. Both tent and RV campers will find suitable options, with developed campgrounds like Chalk Creek offering full hookups and showers, while public land sites cater to self-sufficient campers seeking a more primitive experience.

    Dan's Land Free Camp

    Small circle cool spot

This is just like a 20 yard circle right off a dirt road. Cool idea from Dan to offer this. Its a great off the highway spot. Only a mile down an easy dirt road. No amenities just a place to park and sleep. Dont be suprised if someone else pulls in close and parks. Not a ton of space but a great location with good views and 2 bars verizon cell

    Salida North BLM

    Cool location close to highway

Right off the highway. Cool place with a little canyon. Reminds me of a state park campground. Very close and open sites with campfire rings and picnic tables. The road gets pretty bumpy going to the back half but I bet they fix that soon. Some easy family friendly hiking. Verizon cell is 1-2 bars. No bathrooms!

    Salida BLM Land

    Close to town good cell

This place ia close to salida which is nice. Your Google maps may not get you here . Instead put in race track trail trailhead and it will take you right to to main parking lot. The road to the dispersed sites goes up from there. Its not great but 2wd van is fine if careful. Good cellphone signal. But the spots are small, close together, and super uneven. It makes no sense why some of them are so slanted, but its fine for a 1 night stay. I wouldnt recommend this as a destination

    Browns Canyon Dispersed

    Great

Some nice campsites not too far from civilization, but far enough away that you don’t see many people besides a few other campers. The spots are spaced out well, some larger than others. The road coming in is very rough, I drive a subaru impreza hatchback and felt very nervous because I don’t have high clearance. Beautiful view.

    White Star

Nice campground with great water and trail access

Beautiful campground that is big but felt pretty quiet and chill, even on 4th of July weekend. The paved loops were perfect for my kids to bike around and we loved being able to walk to the water and trails

    Oh Be Joyful Campground

    Beautiful quiet campground

This is a beautiful small campground with great trails nearby. Feels far from town, but really it's just a 20ish min drive into Crested Butte. There are also trails to bike or run into town. We filled water here. https://townofcrestedbutte.colorado.gov/rv-dump-station

Docked it a star because the host really isn't around much. She was on site just one of our 4 days there. We talked to cyclists who spend a lot of time there and it sounds like that's about typical for her. It didn't impact our stay, but some others were complaining that someone else was occupying their spot despite them having a reservation. Since nobody is there to monitor, they get a lot of squatters.

Camped here on off-season. Wonderful babbling brook, lots of trees, peaceful quiet

Guide to Buena Vista

Dispersed camping near Buena Vista, Colorado ranges in elevation from 7,000 to 9,000 feet, creating varied camping conditions across seasons. Located in the Arkansas River Valley, the region experiences warm days and significantly cooler nights, with temperature drops of 30-40 degrees common after sunset. Most free camping areas lack amenities but provide direct access to recreational opportunities.

What to do

Hiking access from campsites: At Raspberry Gulch Dispersed Site, multiple trails including the Colorado Trail are directly accessible. "We went for a hike, there were multiple hiking trails including access to the Colorado Trail. We also rode our mountain bikes on 272, 274A and the 273," reports one camper.

Mountain biking right from camp: BV Overlook offers immediate trail connections. "We visited Buena Vista mainly to mountain bike and we loved that you can ride right from the campsite onto the trails," states a reviewer who appreciated the convenience of not having to drive to trailheads.

Ghost town exploration: From Cascade Campground, campers can access St. Elmo ghost town just up the valley. "Ghost town at the top of the valley. Hot springs at the bottom. Fishing all along," notes one visitor, highlighting the variety of activities within a short drive.

What campers like

Private dispersed sites: Browns Creek offers well-separated camping spots. "Gorgeous, remote. Dispersed campsites are spread out so you can't see or hear your neighbors. Great proximity to trailheads and easy to get to," explains a camper who values privacy while still having easy access.

Riverside camping experience: The walk-in sites at Ruby Mountain Campground provide river proximity. "Walk-in sites have shady trees and are next to the river," notes a camper, though they mention "RV and tent sites are out in the open so they can be hot during the day."

Aspen forests and lake access: The natural setting at Cottonwood Lake Campground creates a distinctive camping atmosphere. "Lots of trees, so hammocking is a great option. Fills up fast and first come first serve, so arrive accordingly. In a neat little valley surrounded by mountains, and by the side of Cottonwood Lake. People come here just to fish, so bring your gear!"

What you should know

Reservation requirements: Many campgrounds near Buena Vista now require advance planning. "Turtle Rock used to be free dispersed camping but not anymore. See Recreation.gov for sites and reservations," advises one camper at Turtle Rock Campground.

Seasonal road closures: Winter access is limited at some locations. "Closed Dec 1-June 1 for wildlife management. Watch out in the wet weather-road super muddy a bit difficult to get through. Road is not steep though," reports a visitor to Browns Creek.

Cell service variability: Connectivity differs greatly between campgrounds. "AT&T had strong 5G coverage and the starlink internet reached all the way to our campsite," mentions a camper at BV Overlook who was able to work remotely while camping.

Tips for camping with families

Look for amenities: Chalk Creek Campground offers facilities that make family camping easier. "The campground is very clean and well maintained. The bathrooms were clean and the shower rooms were updated, clean and spacious," reports a reviewer, highlighting features important for family stays.

Find playground access: BV Overlook provides dedicated recreation areas for children. "A wonderful place for families, a nice playground and on Saturday night we had an ice cream social," notes one camper about the kid-friendly environment.

Consider creekside locations: Hecla Junction Campground provides river access in a maintained setting. "Beautiful, clean, no shade," reports a reviewer, highlighting the trade-off between the pristine environment and lack of natural protection from the sun.

Tips from RVers

Road access considerations: Access routes vary in quality for larger rigs. "There is a 6 mile hike (Brown Creek Falls) down the road as well. The spots near the river were taken so we continued on farther down the road. I like this area because there are spots in wide open fields and there are also spots secluded in dense woods," explains a visitor to Browns Creek.

Leveling challenges: Pay attention to site grade before setting up. "Sights off the river are on a steep grade, which will require a lot of rise in trailer jacks-bring our blocks. Most sights have space for a trailer and tent," advises a camper at Hecla Junction.

Narrow entry roads: Some campgrounds have challenging access. "Keep in mind the access road into the camp is very narrow. Your best bet is to have someone be a look out and clear the road because your in between a rock and cliff," warns a Ruby Mountain camper who experienced difficulty navigating larger vehicles.
