Best Dog-Friendly Camping near Dumont, CO

Denver West-Central City KOA features a dedicated dog park, hot tubs, and full hookup sites for RV campers with pets. This campground, located at 9,000 feet elevation, maintains pet-friendly policies across its tent sites, RV spots, and cabin accommodations. Pets must remain on leash throughout the campground except in designated off-leash areas. The KOA provides metal patio furniture at each site along with fire pits and concrete pads. Campers report the staff is courteous and helpful with pet-related questions. Golden Gate Canyon State Park's Reverend's Ridge and Deer Creek campgrounds also welcome pets at their tent sites, RV spots, cabins, and yurts. Both campgrounds enforce standard leash requirements and provide waste disposal stations.

Dispersed camping options near Dumont offer more primitive pet-friendly alternatives. Fall River Reservoir Dispersed Camping Trail requires 4x4 capability but rewards pet owners with scenic spots along a rushing creek. Gordon Gulch Dispersed Area permits pets but requires owners to pack out all waste as no facilities are provided. Chinns Lake Dispersed Camping similarly allows pets with standard national forest regulations applying. Weather considerations are important when camping with pets in this area, as afternoon thunderstorms with hail are common in summer months, and temperatures at higher elevations can drop into the 40s even in July. The area features numerous hiking trails accessible to leashed dogs, though pet owners should be cautious of wildlife encounters and changing weather conditions.

    Spruce Lake RV Park

    Great location for RMNL

The selling point of this campground is location. It’s as close to Rocky Mountain National Park as you can get without actually camping on NPS property. You are completely surrounded by the mountains and the views are amazing. There’s a beautiful river flowing nearby. Easy access to Estes Park. I biked into downtown and back easily. Close to a great little market and several restaurants. Sites are very tight with no privacy unless you are along the edges of the park. Nice laundry facilities, mini golf, and a small pond. There’s a small dog park but I’d recommend taking your dog to the city’s dog park about 10 minutes away. It’s worth the drive and your dog can go swimming on a beach.

    Chatfield State Park Campground

Popular and large campground near the lake

As it is very close to the city, the temperature stays consistent with Denver temps. So in the summer, it will not be as cool as some mountain spots. That being said, it is very easy to get to and you’ll have the lake right there to cool off!

Entrance into the state park is about $7/day. There is a dog park within the state park that allows off leash and has some ponds the dogs can swim in. Entrance to the dog park is $2.

    Cherry Creek State Park Campground

A piece of nature tucked into the city.

Located in the city, but once you’re in the park you don’t feel like you’re in the city at all!!! The RV spots have full hookups and are nice and spacious, as are the neighbors. We were able to set up a tent too! Great place to stroll and relax. Beautiful sunsets. Clean bathrooms and laundry facilities with a little vending machine.

A great place for camping (RV and tent spots), fishing, wildlife/nature viewing, hiking, boating (all water activities), has a swim beach, marina, off leash dog park, shooting range, horse stables that you can do a beautiful hour horseback ride.

FEES: Campsites $41 full hookup, basic campsite $28, daily park pass is $11, annual park pass $83, daily dog park pass $3, annual dog park pass $25, and group camping is available too.

    Cherry Creek State Park Campground

    City Camping at it's Best

Great campground here at this state park. We have always stayed in the Arapahoe Group Loop for holiday weekends. Arapahoe Group Loop has a great pavillion with outdoor kitchen and bathroom. Overall Camper amenities are great and very clean. Many well shaded individual sites are available. Campsites are far from other park amenities like Dog Park, Shooting Range, Marina. Swim beach is a 10 minute walk-able distance from campground. Recommend driving to get around the park.

    Chatfield State Park Campground

    So much to do!

Chatfield is such a great park; I’ve spent so much time biking, kayaking, paddleboarding, spending time with family; picnics areas are even great to have lunch. The dog park is by far the best. Off leash- so much room; well taken care of and big lake for the dogs to swim. And it’s close to Denver - so we go here weekly!

    Cherry Creek State Park Campground

Super busy but great for dogs

This is a location that you only camp if you literally don't have any worries about being around people. It is ALWAYS packed due to the tons of hiking trails, huge dog park, and water access.

I taught kayaking to little ones here and it was always a fight to get into the park, get to the water, and not get run over by boats and unexperienced (or entitled) people.

The campground is well maintained but it sit really worth being able to be basically in a metropolitan city? For me I'll go somewhere more nature friendly and less crowded.

BUT it is excellent for dogs. We love taking out dogs here because they can play in water, run their hearts out, and hang out with other dogs. It is pricey to get into the park though. $80 for a year pass to the state parks and another $25 for the dog park fees.

What to do

Mountain biking on local trails: West Magnolia Campground offers direct access to numerous mountain biking trails with varying difficulty levels. What you should know

Limited cell service: Connectivity varies widely between campgrounds. At Gordon Gulch, Chad C. reports having "zero cell reception" with AT&T, while "others had Verizon which had limited cell service."

Seasonal road closures: Winter access can be restricted at many sites. Cameron B. notes that at Chinns Lake, the road was "still impossible to get to by off-roading. Snow drifts towards the top still too deep for vehicles."

Early arrival recommended: Popular sites fill quickly, especially on weekends. At West Magnolia, Chris W. advises "getting here early to procure a better site" since all sites were occupied when they arrived.

Leveling challenges: Several campgrounds require extra preparation for RVs. At Golden Gate Canyon, Rich M. advises: "The sites are not very level so be prepared to use your blocks."

Road navigation concerns: Large rigs face access limitations. At Columbine Campground, Amanda K. notes "the drive up is super bumpy but we made it here in a class A just fine," suggesting careful driving can overcome some road challenges.
