Pet-friendly camping near Imperial Beach ranges from beachfront RV sites at Silver Strand State Beach to primitive tent and yurt sites at Tijuana River Valley Regional Park. Silver Strand State Beach accommodates pets at multiple camping areas with water and electric hookups, positioned directly along the beach. Campers can choose from 100-level sites that back directly onto the sand, 200-level spots separated by a single street, or 300-400 level locations further from the shore. All campsites require self-contained RVs or trailers with no tent camping permitted. Tijuana River Valley Regional Park Campground provides another pet-friendly option with primitive camping sites for tents, RVs, and yurts, though sites lack privacy with no trees or bushes separating neighbors. Both locations maintain clean facilities with showers and restrooms. Campland on the Bay and San Diego Metro KOA also welcome pets at their established campgrounds offering various accommodation types including cabins and RV sites with full hookups. The sites at Silver Strand lock gates at night, preventing late returns to the campground.
A 1.5-mile walking path connects Tijuana River Valley Regional Park Campground to the beach, though swimming at Imperial Beach is not recommended due to water contamination warnings. Silver Strand features a separated bike trail running the entire strand down to Imperial Beach and up to Coronado, creating safe pet exercise opportunities away from traffic. Campers should bring their own portable fire pits at Silver Strand as fires directly on the beach are prohibited. The proximity to the Mexico border occasionally affects cell service at Tijuana River Valley campground, with some visitors reporting their phones connecting to international networks. Many pet owners appreciate the five-mile bike ride from Silver Strand to Hotel Del Coronado for daytime excursions. Wildlife warnings are minimal, though mosquitos can be problematic at certain campgrounds during warmer months.

We stayed in April; the trails were closed due to the heavy rain this year. Imperial Beach is not the place for swimming. There’s a sign going in that says there’s chemicals and sewage in the water. You can camp here though and go north to other beaches.
Silver Strand is set in the perfect spot: halfway between Coronado and Imperial beach. The bike path is amazing and you can go under the road to the bay to enjoy kayaking or SUP. The beach is great but in the spring we always see signs telling us to stay out of the contaminated water. So be careful. The signs disappear in the summer. The sites are tight. If you have a larger camper you need the first or fourth row!
We stayed in 134, right on the sand. Our 27' trailer (with butt over sand, incredibly) and full-size truck fit comfortably in our spot, and several folks with fifth wheels also looked to have plenty of room. With 50 amp electric and a daily pump truck for $20 (they literally suck your tanks into theirs), you basically have full hookups. For the price, I can't imagine it gets any better.
The campground itself is, if you look in one direction, a parking lot. Look the other way and you're on the same beach Navy SEALs train on. Mostly families out here having a good time.
Location is great for biking, with a separated trail that runs the strand all the way down to Imperial Beach and to ritzy Coronado. Driving into San Diego proper isn't too bad, as long as you don't mind Southern California driving in general.
One thing to watch out for: Thanks to rain, several beachside sites were getting taken over by sand. One family spent about two hours digging themselves enough room for backing into.
Amenities isn’t all that great when they’re not maintained well. Gym has damaged equipment, pool has lose hand rails and heated pool is filthy. Pool furniture is outdated, broken and dirty. They will only play country music at the pool. The shower house looks like it has recently been updated but smells and has mold growing already. They do not allow any kind of camper except big rigs/trailers. They have a “dog park”, which is very small and smell horrendous due to there only being fake plastic grass. Most owners will also not clean up after their pets, so you or your dog may step into feces quite often there. RV park is between highway and main road - no quiet found here. Rules on what you’re allowed to put up for shade will vary depending on how much management likes you there. All in all an Ok place if you aren’t actually spending you time there.
Current update 12/13/25 The road is being repaved and resealed. They are also doing movie nights in the weekends for kids and have the occasional arts and crafts for them. For that I have added an extra star since there isn’t much for smaller children in general.
Location near I-15 and Gas stations. Staff is kind and professional. Full hookups. Fill propane avaible. Resort-style amenities. Heated outdoor Pool. Nice dog park. Access to a park for walking. 🔹For sure we will stay again and recommend🔹
Nice park, huge grassy area..dog park near by. Sites are close but there is open space behind your unit..NOT on a base, but bathhouse is coded entry to only allow registered guests use..
RV spots are arranged in a horseshoe around a park with a playground. Sites on outside of horseshoe have to walk between interior sites to get to the park, bathrooms and laundry. Wi-Fi is good enough to work remotely. We didn’t try streaming.
Adjacent to the RV park are sports fields, picnic areas and a golf course.
The dog park is nice and clean and is reserved for RV park guests. The pool is beautiful and has a two-story tall slide. The pool is closed this summer and next (2022-23) but is normally open Memorial Day to Labor Day.
RV park is open to military and retired military.
First, the campsite has the MOST CLEANEST restroom and shower booths I have ever visited for tent camping. This is no doubt that for those folks who are needed for good built qaulity toiletery, this will be your location.
For the down sides;
1. The trains - There is a rail right behind the tent sites so if you are looking for the tent sites with quiet location: PLEASE STAY AWAY from here. the trains do not operate from around 10 pm, back on operating starting from 5 am.
2. for T1 tent site, BE AWARE that there is a dog park RIGHT next to the tent site: there will be a urine odor all over the place.
3. If you are planning on cooking, just be aware that there is no proper location to do a dish wash. You would need some sort of wipes to do.
Tijuana River Valley Regional Park Campground provides primitive camping without privacy barriers, requiring a 1.5-mile walk to reach the beach. Camping options range from yurts to tent sites with varying levels of facilities. The park sits near the Mexico border, creating potential cell service complications for visitors. Imperial Beach's shoreline faces water quality concerns with swimming advisories in place during certain seasons due to water contamination from across the border.
Explore bike paths: Silver Strand features a dedicated bicycle trail running the entire strand to Imperial Beach and up to Coronado. "The bike paths and beach will keep you busy! They also lock you in the campground at 8 pm. That makes it difficult to go out at night. Well, impossible," notes a visitor to Silver Strand State Beach.
Visit Coronado: The Hotel Del Coronado makes an excellent day trip destination from nearby campgrounds. "We were sent to the north side of the campground since the south side was full. The south side has all of the amenities like the pool, restaurant, and activity room," reports a camper at Thousand Trails Pio Pico.
Enjoy water activities: Fiddlers Cove Marina offers equipment rentals for water enthusiasts. "Adjacent to the marina, so many boats, kayaks and watercraft are available for rent. Facilities are immaculate," explains a reviewer at Fiddlers Cove RV Park.
Beach proximity: Direct beach access ranks high among camper preferences. "100s are unbeatable. One of the best beach camp grounds probably in CA. If you're lucky enough to get a spot in the 100s you park right on the sand essentially," shares a visitor about Silver Strand State Beach.
Urban convenience: Quick access to San Diego attractions appeals to many campers. "We had a wonderful stay here! The campground was clean and well maintained. If you don't need a pull through, definitely get one of the outer loop spaces - they're way less cramped," notes a guest at Sweetwater Summit Regional Park.
Pet-friendly amenities: Many campgrounds welcome pets with dedicated areas. "WE LOVE SILVER STRAND! Lots of kids and families bike and ride within the loops. No curfew that I'm aware of so occasionally it can be loud at night (if you have little ones)," mentions a Silver Strand camper.
Late night restrictions: Silver Strand locks its gates at night, preventing campers from returning after hours. "We stay there in the off season. Love being there the spaces are big I generally stay for 2 to 5 days bring supplies no stores near by and they lock the gate so if you go for a evening in town you will be walking back from the gate," advises a regular visitor.
Beach water quality: Imperial Beach often posts water contamination warnings. "Pollution sucks! Paved. Crowded. Polluted ocean, no swimming allowed at this time. Expensive. But you are on an uncrowded beach," reports a camper at Silver Strand.
Limited shade: Most area campgrounds lack natural shade. "The hiking trails are nice and the staff that work at the campground are friendly. The main drawback is there is no privacy whatsoever at the sites. The camp sites are right next to each other and all in the open. No trees, no bushes, nothing separating you from your neighbors," explains a visitor to Tijuana River Valley Regional Park Campground.
